Megawatt charging infrastructure for electric heavy-duty transport

The transport sector, including road freight, is the source of significant greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution. An accelerated transition to zero-emissions powertrain technologies in the transport sector requires readily available and efficient high-power charging infrastructure along freight corridors. An inadequate charging network is therefore a major barrier to freight carriers' willingness to adopt electric heavy-duty vehicles. MegaCharge aims to build a complete value chain for the development of megawatt charging infrastructure for the long-distance road freight sector by advancing knowledge and concepts and demonstrating a full-scale megawatt charging unit. The development of smart solutions and technology in both the electricity and transport sectors for the efficient expansion of charging infrastructure is critical for the successful electrification of heavy-duty trucks; addressing the needs of transport actors and effective electricity grid utilization are both crucial to successful deployment. Moreover, many areas in Norway do not have the grid capacity for new high-power charging stations. MegaCharge will therefore develop and test tools for the optimal design of charging stations, an energy management system for optimal utilization of the grid and infrastructure at the stations and conceptualize a digital booking system for charging services. The project will also establish co-creation arenas for the MegaCharge pilots. Expertise from industry, public authorities and researchers will be harnessed to identify realistic deployment scenarios that maximize the environmental benefits of a megawatt charging network. Norwegian actors will gain an international competitive advantage by leading the development of expertise in charging infrastructure for road freight. This expertise will allow them to become global suppliers of megawatt-charging solutions for heavy-duty battery electric trucks and enable the commercialization of this technology.

Grønn Plattform MegaCharge har som mål å bidra direkte til å nå målet om 50 % utslippskutt for transportsektoren innen 2030, gjennom å bygge en komplett verdikjede for utvikling av ladeinfrastruktur for elektrisk tungtransport. MegaCharge vil akselerere utbyggingen av høyeffekts ladeinfrastruktur gjennom å utvikle ny kunnskap, konsepter og teknologi for megawatt-lading av tungtransport. Flere av disse løsningene skal utvikles, bygges og piloteres av industripartnerne i MegaCharge. En fullskala lademodul for megawatt-hurtiglading av lastebiler utvikles, bygges og demonstreres i MegaCharge. Et verktøy for optimal design av ladestasjoner og et styringssystem for optimal utnyttelse av strømnett og infrastruktur på ladestasjoner skal utvikles og demonstreres. Prosjektet skal også utvikle og demonstrere et konsept for booking av ladetjenester. Disse målene er kun mulig å oppnå ved tett samarbeid mellom industri, FoU-organisasjoner og myndigheter. MegaCharge vil gjøre norske selskaper til globale leverandører av løsninger og teknologi for lading av tungtransport, og prosjektet vil kunne bidra til å gjøre energistasjoner med hurtiglading for tungtransport mer kommersielt tilgjengelig for transportører nasjonalt og globalt.
