Autonomous Drone Operations for Efficiency and Scalability in the Future The rapidly growing market for drones has revolutionized how we conduct everything from photography and filming to search and rescue operations. While today's drones are primarily proprietary systems that require constant human oversight, advancing autonomy paves the way for drones to operate more independently, enhancing efficiency without eliminating human operator control. By introducing autonomous behavior and onboard sensor processing, systems like Valkyrie enable operators to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, such as monitoring multiple areas simultaneously, thus streamlining operations. In an era where technological solutions are evolving rapidly, the ability to be hardware-agnostic is necessary. Valkyrie exemplifies this mindset by being designed for hardware independence. This provides the system with unmatched flexibility and resilience, allowing for the integration of various drone types and autonomous systems, from multi-copters to fixed-wing drones. This platform thinking emphasizes building an infrastructure that can be adapted, scaled, and expanded as needed. Viewing Valkyrie as a "system of systems" allows us to understand its place in a broader value chain where different autonomous units work harmoniously to achieve common objectives. This enables the efficient addition, removal, or swapping of components without disrupting the overall system. The global demand for such technology is ever-increasing. This creates opportunities for both large and small players. Outcome: FFI has in this project done an evaluation of the demand for cost-effective UAVs and use of scalable software. FFI will support the establishment of a company based on research and technology developed at FFI. Possible impacts identified: 1) Potential higher productivity when implementing new and efficient technology. 2) More sustainable drone operations and better utilisation of resources. 3) Positive impact on Norwegian industry in that the technology becomes more competitive internationally. The end goal is to provide customers with a more sustainable and competitive technology at a reasonable price.
