Renewable energy on the high seas – science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations for regulatory and governance challenges

The high seas are those marine areas under no State's jurisdiction. So far, all marine renewable energy (RE) activity is being conducted under State's jurisdiction. However, recent advances in technology are raising the prospect of carrying out RE activity on the high seas. Currently, only seabed mining activities in the Area have been regulated. The Area is the seabed and ocean floor beyond the limits of State's jurisdiction. From the legal viewpoint, the main gap is a lack of an international regulatory framework, informed by participatory mechanisms and supported by scientific evidence, for RE activities on the high seas, especially regarding their environmental and social impacts. 
The primary project objective (O) is to provide the scientific community and policymakers with science-informed and indigenous knowledge-based recommendations in support of the development of  RE regulation on the high seas. 
Two specific Os are set to complement the primary O, namely:
O1 To advance the use of systematic consultation processes that facilitates research at the crossroads of marine sciences and law. 
O2 To advance critical knowledge and understanding of environmental pressing issues comparable to the regulation of RE on the high seas, such as deep-sea mining in the Area.
A multistep innovative methodology will be adopted, by integrating marine scientific knowledge, consultative processes, and advanced critical research in the subject matter. A case study (interdisciplinary and participatory) involving marine scientists, indigenous and coastal communities and policy makers will be conducted onboard the Research Vessel KronPrins Haakon at the beginning of the project. The case study outcomes will be analysed through critical legal analysis to build a knowledge base for policy recommendations. 
The project will advance the PI’s career in an international research environment, allowing her to generate independent, high-quality, and reproducible results.




Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Evaluation of thermohydraulic characteristic of printed circuit heat exchangers in pseudocritical region for supercritical CO2 cycle

Currently, 28.2% of the total EU-28 greenhouse gas emissions come from the power sector, a large contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the emphasis of the research in power generation has swung towards assessing highly efficient and greener power cycles. In this reference, the novel supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle (sCO2-BC) is an ideal choice that outstrips other formally well-known power cycles (Brayton & Rankine cycles). In sCO2-BC, the role of the pre-cooler is critical. It serves as a sink to the power cycle and regulates the conditions at the compressor's inlet. The compressor's inlet temperature is intended to be maintained close to the critical temperature of carbon dioxide (CO2) to achieve greater cycle efficiencies. However, exceptionally higher values of the specific heat capacity of CO2 near its critical point (up to 40 times higher than water) require exceedingly high water flow rates on the cold side to achieve the desired exit temperatures of CO2. Consequently, the pre-cooler's pumping power requirements become high enough to deteriorate the cycle's performance. This problem can only be mitigated by exploring new channel geometries with enhanced thermohydraulic characteristics. Therefore, the proposed study plan to characterize the complex thermohydraulic characteristics in the pseudocritical region of CO2 using a multifaceted technique that includes, experimental, numerical, and machine learning techniques. The proposed work will provide a step forward to the success of sCO2-BC technologies that, in turn, will facilitate its integration with the green energy resources (generation-IV nuclear reactors and solar concentrated plants), helping to meet the EU's 2030 climate and energy framework goals of achieving at least 32% share for renewable energy.

Bilberry Ecology and the Regeneration of forest Ecosystem Functioning

Human impacts such as clearcut harvesting have left forests bereft of the organisms that underpin their functioning. The decline of key plant species has reduced the capacity of forests to store carbon (C) and provide ecosystem services to the people of Europe. The regeneration of forest ecosystem functioning requires a deeper understanding of how the traits of its species can be linked to ecosystem processes. The BEREFT project aims to elucidate how the plant traits of bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus, modulate the dynamics of C and nitrogen (N) within the boreal forest. The project combines advances in chemical ecology with an innovative experimental design situated in Norway pairing experimental plots in formerly clearcut forest plantations with those from near-natural forests. I will collect a comprehensive set of bilberry's chemical traits and test both in-situ and in-vitro experiments to determine the underlying mechanism linking bilberry traits to C and N dynamics. The project goes beyond the state-of-the-art in applying novel methods from chemical ecology to measure bilberry's traits and uses a creative design to link those traits to ecosystem functioning. Through the scope of traits measured and the innovation in experimental design pairing clearcut forests with near-natural forests, this project will significantly advance our knowledge of the ecology of Europe's forest ecosystems. I will receive training in chemical ecology to advance my career as an expert in data generation and exchange with the host my knowledge on long-term ecological experimentation and ecosystem functioning. The project will disseminate deliverables in trait data packages, an open-source chemical ecology pipeline, and a robust measure of the effect size of bilberry's impact on C and N in the boreal forest. Knowledge of bilberry's role in the forest C cycle can be exploited by forestry managers in efforts to maximize C storage to meet the EU's goal of carbon neutrality.

EOSC Beyond: advancing innovation and collaboration for research

EOSC Beyond overall objective is to advance Open Science and innovation in research in the context of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) by providing new EOSC Core capabilities allowing scientific applications to find, compose and access multiple Open Science resources and offer them as integrated capabilities to researchers. To do so, EOSC Beyond supports a new concept of EOSC: a federated and integrated network of Nodes operated at different levels, national, regional, international and thematic, to serve the specific scientific missions of their stakeholders. Further specific objectives of the project are to accelerate ‘time to product’ of new scientific applications with software adapters, enable Open Science with machine composability and dynamic deployment of shared resources, support innovation in EOSC with a testing and integration environment, and align the EOSC Core architecture and specifications to integrate with European dataspaces. The project extends the state of the art of the EOSC Core and adopts a co-design methodology, including requirements elicitation, software development and validation in collaboration with different use cases from EOSC national and regional initiatives (e-Infra CZ, Czechia, NFDI, Germany, and NI4OS, South East Europe region), thematic research infrastructures from Social Sciences and Humanities (CESSDA), Life Sciences (CNB-CSIC and Instruct-ERIC), Environmental Science (ENES and LifeWatch), and Health and Food (METROFood-RI). EOSC Beyond builds on the capacities of prospective EOSC Nodes and partners with multi-annual experience in developing solutions for large-scale federated digital infrastructures and aligns with the technical architecture and requirements of data spaces from different business sectors. Ultimately, EOSC Beyond supports Open Science in modern, data-intensive, and multidisciplinary research, facilitating resource discovery, access, and reuse across scientific communities, organisations, and countries.


CULTUral heritage in RurAL remote areas for creative tourism and sustainabilITY

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the promotion of cultural and creative tourism activities, considering the different capacities, resources, and specificities (material, creative, human...) of the territories, as a mean to help with the sustainable development of peripheral rural areas, favoring job creation and population settlement. For this, the potential of its cultural heritage will be researched, taking into account both the artisan material culture (techniques, materials, patterns and decorative elements), as well as the intangible culture (music, oral knowledge and culinary traditions) as a resource.
 
To promote non-seasonal tourism as a form of sustainable development with a stable population settlement we are going to research the crafts linked to the territory and their implications, but we will also carry out a documentation of the productive processes. First and foremost, we are going to cater to the necessities of the local communities and pay attention to aspects related to societal groups at risk of exclusion, such as women, the elderly and the youth.

All this will be developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, for which we will count on the various teams —most of them linked to different countries— that will be part of the consortium. Each of these partners will contribute to the development, as well as to the final result of the project through input directly related to their area of ??expertise: for example, among the collaborators we have intellectual teams specialized in the digitalization of heritage, research, or communication and dissemination, as well as as various institutions that will act as a testing ground for the more practical parts of the proposal. However, if something will characterize our work, it will be the constant collaboration between all parties, as well as the exchange of advice and experiences that will help to enrich collective knowledge and guarantee optimal results.

AQUASERV – RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES FOR SUSTAINABLE AQUACULTURE, FISHERIES AND THE BLUE ECONOMY

The overarching objectives of AQUASERV are to bring together, enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities (including facilities, instruments and expertise) and through the provision of transnational access (on-site or remote) and/or virtual access, to significantly further scientific advance and promote and facilitate the implementation of European Common Fisheries Policy, the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Sustainable Blue Economy and the European Green Deal. 

AQUASERV will achieve these objectives by offering scientists from academia and business remote and on-site transnational (TA) and virtual (VA) access to an advanced set of European research infrastructures and its nodes related to research and management of marine and freshwater biological resources, food and biotechnology. These include the European Marine Biological Resource Centre ERIC (EMBRC), the Analysis and Experimentation on Ecosystems ERIC, The Aquaculture for Excellence for Aquaculture in Fish (Aquaexcel), and the Infrastructure for Promoting Metrology in Food and Nutrition (METROFOOD), as well as the International Council for Exploration of the Sea, both a service provider and stakeholder. It also includes the Research Infrastructure for Science and Innovation Policy Studies (RISIS) to bring contributions from the social sciences and to bring results nearer to policy makers ensuring societal impact. 

To enhance, integrate and customise RI capacities, collaboration between partners and new pipelines to meet the objectives of the project will be developed during the first 3 years and will make available  to users.  To ensure these capacities will not be lost, a sustainability work package involving stakeholders will address the project legacy.

Harmonization of Advanced Materials Ecosystems serving strategic Innovation Markets to pave the way to a Digital Materials & Product Passport

The overarching objective of DigiPass is to enhance the digital maturity of the European communities that develop materials and intermediate products. The project will develop recommendations and clear routes toward digitalized circular business models. The overarching key result of DigiPass is to create a sustainable platform which includes support for Digital Materials & Product Passport and for collaborative innovation-by-design processes in a circular economy served by advanced materials. A business model for operating such a platform completes the overarching objective.
DigiPass is harmonizing and synergizing collected materials data sources and digital infrastructures. This will enable interoperability of data exchange, and standardization of advanced materials knowledge representation at all maturity levels. Accelerating the design, development, and production of advanced, safe, and sustainable chemicals and materials, as they are necessary for innovative products, calls for a collaborative approach involving different stakeholders to support durability, repair and overhaul, reuse, and recyclability of products. DigiPass project impacts all materials development communities over the whole circular value chain. 


Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change risks

Adaptation to climate change requires in-depth understanding of climate change driven risks, including their determinants (hazards, exposure and vulnerabilities) and impacts to human, production and natural systems. Integrated Research Infrastructure Services for Climate Change Risks (IRISCC) is a consortium of diverse and complementary leading research infrastructures (RIs) covering disciplines from natural sciences to social sciences, across different domains and sectors. IRISCC provides scientific and knowledge services to foster cutting-edge research and evidence-based policymaking to improve Europe's resilience to climate change. IRISCC ensures a “one-stop-shop” for various user communities on climate change risk related RI services by setting up a dedicated Catalogue of services and related access management system both for granting transnational (onsite and remote) and offering virtual access. The Catalogue of services will be built through three consecutive releases, each delivering increasingly integrated services to its user communities. The IRISCC service integration will include Service Design Labs employing co-design and transdisciplinary action, and Service Demonstrators benchmarking the integrated cross-RI services. In addition to services aimed towards the scientific community, IRISCC will offer knowledge services aimed towards policymakers and other stakeholders. This is done together with risk management platforms. The research enabled by IRISCC contributes to future reports on climate change effects (IPCC, IPBES) as well as policy- and decision-making to meet the targets of climate adaptation strategies. IRISCC contributes to training a new generation of scientists to efficiently use RI services and for data stewardship. Data from IRISCC will be open and made available in compliance with FAIR principles and linked to European initiatives such as EOSC. Strong links will be created between IRISCC and current and future efforts under Horizon Europe.

Enhanced X(cross)-disciplinary Community-driven Imaging Technologies for Earth and Environmental material research

The EXCITE² Network is revolutionizing Earth and environmental material science research by consolidating a critical mass of 18 research facilities in 12 European and associated partner countries into a unified infrastructure and providing transnational access to advanced imaging technologies. This enables scientists to decipher complex processes within Earth materials at scales from nanometres to hundreds of centimetres, gaining unparalleled insight into the chemical and physical processes that govern, among others, environmental toxicity and its impact on human health, critical metal extraction for renewable energies, and the utilisation of Earth materials as long-term storage for climate-altering gases. The consortium fosters knowledge-sharing and talent attraction, bolstering the problem-solving capacity of the European Research Area. Moreover, EXCITE² is driving interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilisation across academic institutions, scientific disciplines, and industry, propelling Europe towards a sustainable future. The initiative offers dedicated training programmes to a new generation of researchers within the European open science landscape, paired with access to world-class imaging facilities and expertise for problem-solving research and innovation. EXCITE² is introducing innovative service developments, such as artificial intelligence and leading-edge imaging experiments, to increase the user's problem-solving capacity. In addition, the consortium is implementing customised project valorisation strategies to maximize the impact of research outcomes in academia, society, and the economy. Citizen science projects allow the public to participate directly within the EXCITE² Network, contributing to solving EU challenges. As such, EXCITE² is paving the way towards a sustainable future, driving scientific excellence, and creating positive societal impact.

The pre-project’s primary objective is to explore the feasibility and value of using drones for home delivery in suburbs. Drone flights in cottage areas are optimal for testing as the building density resembles that of the suburb, but involves a lower risk due to the asynchronous periods people stay in their cabins. Aviant will operate 3 months of such test flights in Lillehammer, followed by an evaluation for the main project in collaboration with NTNU and the shaping of a consortium. This investigation will be unprecedented; showcasing key insights to operate last-mile delivery in suburbs with drones. The findings will also identify the missing competency necessary for the consortium before applying to the main project. After that, the consortium will be able to determine the appropriate approach, ambition level, and goals for the main project. This includes creating a plan of how to involve users and stakeholders in the main project.

Regarding the central R&D challenges, drone delivery introduces a massive change in people's behavior. The complexity involved can be too much to handle in a pre-project. This has only been tested in a handful of places in the world. Hence, it can prove difficult to define what questions to research in the feasibility study. Naturally, operating autonomously in new environments also introduce the danger of crashing drones. The risk is however minimized by strict regulations, technology redundancy in case of failure, a safety pilot monitoring every flight, as well as the experience from 3,500km flown so far.

SustainAir: Transforming Last-Mile Logistics with Sustainable Drone Solutions

Luftbåren mikroplast (<5 mm i størrelse) anses som nye forurensninger som nylig har dukket opp. På grunn av den minimale størrelsen, tettheten og de ikke-sfæriske formene (f.eks. fibre), blir den lett re-suspendert fra bakken med turbulente vindkast og fra havoverflaten når bobler brister og fører dem vekk med vinden. Følgelig er atmosfærisk transport en viktig vei for at mikroplast kan nå avsidesliggende områder som polene og fjellene, og der avsettes på snø- og islagte overflater. Mikroplast er skadelig for marine og terrestriske økosystemer. Den kan også være farlig for menneskers helse gjennom å introdusere giftige organiske forurensninger og dermed potensiell innblanding i ulike biologiske prosesser. Mikroplastpartikler er også fargerike, de absorberer stråling og kan påvirke jordens strålingsbalanse direkte. Samtidig krever økt plastproduksjon større forbruk av fossilt brensel, og påvirker dermed klimaet indirekte.
 
I MAGIC finner vi ut av alle disse usikre atmosfæriske prosessene, samtidig som vi bygger standard driftsprosedyrer for robust deteksjon av atmosfærisk mikroplast. Vi modellerer ikke-sfæriske strukturer av atmosfærisk mikroplast direkte i FLEXPART-modellen, forbedrer langdistansetransport og beregner kildene deres ved å benytte observasjoner og en invers modelleringsalgoritme. Videre studerer vi hvordan disse forurensningene re-suspenderes fra bakken (turbulens-indusert) og/eller havet (bobler som sprekker) ved hjelp av mikroskalamodellering (PALM-modellen). Vi utvikler robuste metoder for å ta prøver og utføre nøyaktige målinger av atmosfærisk mikroplast fra filtre med offline TED-GC-MS og TD-PTR-MS, samt komplettere resultatene mot mikro-RAMAN spektroskopi. Når vi har utført en nøyaktig definisjon av den atmosfæriske fordelingen og nivåene, skal vi granske mikroplastens innvirkning på nåværende og fremtidig klima ved å bruke modeller for strålingsoverføring.

Microplastics (MPs) have been recognised today as the most emerging contaminants. Around 5 billion tonnes of plastic have accumulated in ecosystems worldwide, thousands are floating and decompose in the oceans, while research has shown that MPs also permeate freshwater and terrestrial environments.
However, it is unknown how airborne MPs are emitted or transported and what their main origin is, despite that they have been detected in urban and remote regions. This is largely due to limitations in the determination methodology that prevents accurate quantification of MP sources. MAGIC will focus on developing a robust methodology to measure airborne MPs, online and offline. The later will allow for accurate quantification of MP sources using Bayesian inverse modelling. To study long-range transport (WP1), physical properties are needed by dispersion models (WP3). MAGIC will identify size distribution of atmospheric MPs (WP3), and improve dispersion models (WP1) to account for different MP shapes (WP1) and their ability to act as cloud condensation or ice nuclei.
It has been reported that deposited MPs can be remobilised by strong winds both from the land and the ocean, allowing secondary transport, similar to the grasshopper effect of POPs or the resuspension of dust. MAGIC will investigate the relative parameters affecting MP resuspension from the surface and their contribution to emissions, by means of large-eddy simulation modelling (WP2).
MPs are colourful particles, thus absorb solar radiation and change surface albedo and/or cloud microphysical properties. MAGIC will investigate their climate impact using a radiative transfer model (WP4).
MAGIC’s results will be relevant to evidence-based policy. MAGIC’s innovations are (i) conceptual, i.e., unstudied aspects of emerging climate feedbacks, (ii) methodological, i.e., development of novel methodologies, and (iii) geographical, i.e. a focus on the remote regions and the High Arctic.

Airborne Microplastic Detection, Origin, Transport and Global Radiative Impact

The AheaD Joint training and Research Network is focused on providing training for creative, entrepreneurial, innovative and resilient doctoral candidates in research on DNA damage and DNA repair ranges from characterising genes and pathways involved in the maintenance of DNA structure in healthy cells to analysing the physiological, cellular and molecular responses that occur upon DNA damage and molecular analysis of diseases associated with DNA damage. We propose a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to dissect the functional contribution of genome maintenance and the DNA damage response on fundamental biological processes allowing us to i) establish a European research platform of excellence in the field of DNA damage repair, ii) create a Network dedicated to high-quality training of younger fellows and iii) transform our long-term collaborations into a high-impact, intellectual network with durable links to the industry. Each project partner will enrol a young researcher with a focus on applicable aspects of the functional role of DNA damage response and DNA repair mechanisms in development and disease. Each researcher will have an individual sub-project, which will be combined with shorter research trainings in the partner organisations, attendance of networking events and courses.

Joint training and Research Network on the DNA Damage Response in Health and Disease

Når folk lider av alvorlige tarmproblemer, undersøker sykehuset ofte pasientens avføring for å se etter ledetråder. Hvis sykehuslaboratoriet finner små organismer kalt mikrobielle eukaryoter, antas de ofte å være årsaken til sykdommen og pasienten får medisiner for å eliminere disse parasittene. Dette forskningsprosjektet fokuserer på en slik parasitt kalt Blastocystis fordi vi er i tvil om det faktisk er en parasitt. Tidligere studier med undersøkelser gjort i mindre grupper av mennesker har funnet denne "parasitten" hos en stor andel av mennesker uten tarmproblemer. Dessuten, når vi gir denne parasitten til rotter som har alvorlig tarmsykdom, er symptomene mindre alvorlige sammenlignet med rotter som ikke har fått Blastocystis.

For å hindre at folk blir behandlet for noe som ikke gjorde dem syke, ønsker vi å undersøke denne saken grundig. Vi skal se etter distribusjonen av Blastocystis i en stor dansk studiegruppe som omfatter over 7000 personer. Denne populasjonsundersøkelsen vil være den største studien av utbredelsen av Blastocystis noensinne. Vi skal også se etter Blastocystis i en stor norsk klinisk studie med 700 pasienter som har påvist inflammatorisk tarmsykdom. Vi vil også prøve å finne ut om kreftpasienter som får immunterapi har større eller mindre sannsynlighet for å utvikle alvorlig tarmsykdom (som en uønsket bivirkning) dersom de har Blastocystis eller ikke. Til slutt vil vi gjennomføre komparative studier i en rottemodell som vi kan infisere med Blastocystis og deretter indusere tarmsykdom, da dette vil tillate oss å studere på en kontrollert måte om Blastocystis gjør symptomene bedre eller verre.

Vi håper at våre grundige undersøkelser med et stort tverrfaglig team av klinikere, molekylærbiologer, epidemiologer og dyreforskere vil føre til at vi kan informere sykehus om de bør behandle pasienter når de finner Blastocystis eller om de trenger å lete videre etter den virkelige årsaken til pasientenes symptomer.

When people suffer from severe intestinal problems, the hospital often examines the patient's stool to look for clues. If the hospital lab finds small organisms called microbial eukaryotes, they are often thought to be the cause of the disease and the patient is given medication to eliminate these parasites. This proposal focuses on one such parasite called Blastocystis because we have doubts about whether it is actually a parasite. Previous studies using small groups of people have found this ‘parasite’ in a large proportion of people without intestinal problems. Also, when we give this parasite to rats that have severe intestinal disease, symptoms are less severe compared to rats that have not been given Blastocystis.
To prevent people being treated for something that did not make them sick, we want to investigate this matter thoroughly. We will be looking for the distribution of Blastocystis in a large Danish study group that includes over 7,000 people. This background population will be the largest study of the distribution of Blastocystis ever. We will also be looking for Blastocystis in a large 700 patient Norwegian clinical trial of inflammatory bowel disease. We will also try to find out whether cancer patients receiving immunotherapy are more or less likely to develop severe bowel disease (as an adverse side effect) if they have Blastocystis or not. Finally, we will conduct comparative studies in a rat model that we can infect with Blastocystis and then induce bowel disease, as this will allow us to study in a controlled manner whether Blastocystis makes symptoms better or worse.
We hope that our thorough investigations with a large interdisciplinary team of clinicians, molecular biologists, epidemiologists, and animal scientists will eventually allow us to inform hospitals whether they should treat patients when they find Blastocystis or whether they need to look further for the real cause of the patients' symptoms.

The role of Blastocystis in inflammatory bowel disease.

Gran er et av de viktigste treslagene i Europa, både i økonomisk forstand og fordi gran bidrar med viktige økosystemtjenester slik som karbonbinding og produksjon av karbonnøytrale råvarer. Fremtiden til kommersielt granskogbruk trues imidlertid i mange land av enorme utbrudd av stor granbarkbille (Ips typographus). Bare i 2019 drepte denne billen >110 millioner m3 gran i Europa – 8 til 48 ganger mer enn normalen for de fire foregående tiårene – og klimaendringer forventes å forsterke denne utviklingen ytterligere. I prosjektet SPRUCEBEETLE vil vi undersøke om den måten vi forvalter granskogen på i dag – med fokus på rene, jevnaldrete granskoger med lang omløpstid – er optimal for å sikre at skogen fortsatt vil fange karbon og produsere tømmer i en fremtid der klimaendringer vil gi økt risiko for barkbilleutbrudd. Vi vil blant annet forbedre den grunnleggende forståelsen av hvordan abiotiske og biotiske drivere bidrar til barkbilleutbrudd gjennom detaljert hydrologisk modellering av hvordan tørkestress påvirker grana samt studier av hvordan barkbiller og deres medfølgende blåvedsopper dreper stressede trær. Vi vil videre utnytte Norges unike infrastruktur med detaljert kartfestet skoginformasjon til å utvikle «vegg-til-vegg» modellerings- og overvåkingsverktøy for barkbilleangrep på nasjonalt nivå. Disse verktøyene vil inkludere et risikovurderings- og styringsverktøy for barkbilleangrep og et rammeverk for å simulere hvordan ulike skogforvaltningsregimer og klimascenarioer påvirker karbonbinding, tømmerproduksjon og risikoen for barkbilleangrep. Til slutt vil vi sammenligne dagens skogforvaltning basert på rene, jevnaldrete granskoger ('business-as-usual') med alternative forvaltningsregimer, slik som aldersblandet og treslagsblandet skog. Dette vil fortelle oss om dagens skogforvaltning, bygget rundt modeller og simuleringer som ikke inkluderer barkbilleangrep, faktisk kan bli snudd på hodet når vi tar økt risiko for barkbilleutbrudd med i modellene.
Så langt har prosjektet fokusert på utvikling av de grunnleggende modeller der er nødvendige for å realisere målene i prosjektet. Dette inkludere et «vegg-tilvegg»-skog modellerings verktøy samt granbarkbille under ulike klima forhold og skogforvaltningsregimer. I løpet av det neste året vil disse verktøy gjøres fritt tilgjengelige.

Norway spruce makes up 25% of the productive forests in Europe, with ca. 7.5 billion m3, and is the most important tree species in Europe in economic terms. Healthy spruce forests also provide crucial ecosystem services, including mitigation of climate change by CO2 sequestration and provisioning of carbon-neutral raw materials that can substitute products with high carbon emissions. However, unprecedented insect outbreaks are now threatening the future of commercial spruce forests over large areas. The European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus) mass-attacks and kills healthy spruce trees, and beetle activity is promoted by climate change both directly (faster development, longer reproductive season) and indirectly (stressed host trees). In 2019 alone, the spruce bark beetle killed >110 million m3 spruce in Europe – 8 to 48 times more than the baseline mortality rate over the four preceding decades – and beetle epidemics are expected to further intensify and expand northwards with progressive climate change. Despite the enormous impact of the beetle, there is still insufficient science-based knowledge about how to manage spruce bark beetle populations effectively, particularly at a landscape scale. In the SPRUCEBEETLE project, we will first develop robust scientific projections for long-term bark beetle damage in Norway by analyzing the main drivers promoting build-up of beetle populations, and then evaluate the effect of short- and long-term risk-reducing management measures. We will determine how forest structure (spatial structure, age and species composition) and biotic/abiotic stressors influence bark beetle damage and estimate the effect of different short- and long-term management measures using simulation models. This ambitious project requires close coordination between researchers from different subject areas, spanning from the chemical ecology of spruce-insect-microbe interactions to molecular biology, forest production and climate modelling.

A climate for spruce? New forest management to mitigate bark beetle risks under climate change

I dag er luftforurensning en av de største helsefarene med anslagsvis 7 millioner mennesker drept hvert år og påvirker helsen til mange. Hvert minutt dør ett barn på grunn av sykdom forårsaket av luftforurensning og ti voksne dør på grunn av forurenset luft som inhaleres i løpet av livet. 92% av verdens befolkning bor på steder der luftkvalitetsnivået overstiger eksponeringsgrensene. Disse fakta burde få oss til å stoppe og tenke så stor innvirkning! Likevel er målinger av luftforurensning begrenset i store deler av verden. Gjeldende løsninger bygger på distribusjon av millioner av sensorer for overvåking av store områder, noe som kan være dyrt å implementere. Som et resultat har de ikke blitt implementert mange steder i verden. Det er dermed et presserende behov for en ny overvåkingsteknologi som enkelt kan implementeres for å håndtere den globale luftforurensningen.

Dette prosjektet møte dette behovet ved å utforske et nytt luftkvalitetsovervåkningsparadigme ved bruk av 5G (og utover) massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenner for samtidig sansing av flere forurensninger ved hjelp av nye materialer distribuert på antenneoverflatene. Ideen er å bruke skreddersydde sansing nanomaterialer på antenneelementets overflater som hver er rettet mot en spesifikk analytt ved bruk av et Molecularly Imprinted Polymer lag over et meget ledende 2D transduction nanomateriallag. Dette kan muliggjøre massiv MIMO med ekstra sansemuligheter uten å påvirke dens primære funksjonalitet. Konseptet kan også utvides for sansing av andre analytter, for eksempel farlige biokjemiske midler, luftbårne bakterier og virus, og analytter i væsker.

Massiv MIMO vil være hovedfunksjonen for fremtidige mobilnett, om få år vil den bli distribuert overalt. Dermed vil prosjektet, hvis det lykkes, kan muliggjøre massiv overvåking av luftkvalitet ved høy romlig oppløsning uten å distribuere millioner av sensorer. Dette vil revolusjonere måten luftkvalitetsovervåking utføres over hele verden.

This project explores a new air quality monitoring paradigm utilizing the fifth generation (5G) massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna infrastructure to simultaneously sense multiple pollutants using novel sensing materials deployed on the antenna surfaces. The idea is to deploy case-tailored sensing nanomaterials on the antenna element surfaces with each targeting a specific analyte using a Molecular Imprinting Polymer (MIP) layer grown above a highly conductive 2D transduction nanomaterial layer. The MIP functionalized transduction nanomaterial over the antenna surface could act as tunable impedance with the impedance value determined by the presence of the target molecules. Sensing is done by monitoring the changes in the impedances between the antenna elements and the load termination in the adaptive impedance matching network. The proposed concept could enable massive MIMO antenna system with an additional sensing functionality without affecting its primary functionalities. By properly designing the physico-chemical composition of the sensing materials, the impedance can be made to respond in a specific way to target pollutants concentrations, which can be decoupled from other mismatch sources using machine learning techniques. The approach is applicable for any multi-antenna system where the antenna elements (same or all) can be functionalized to target a specific pollutant. 

The ambition is to create a new generation of dual functionality massive MIMO antenna system that is used not only for wireless operations, but also have a secondary functionality of multi-pollutant sensing. The concept can also be extended to apply for other environmental analytes such as hazardous chemical/biological agents, airborne bacteria and viruses as well as for fluidic analytes (utilizing microfluidics). If successful, the project will revolutionize air quality monitoring enabling a cost-effective sensing of multiple pollutants using massive MIMO antenna systems.

Air Quality Monitoring Exploiting Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Antennas

Med nesten daglige nyhetsrapporter om angrep på digitale nettverk og datainfrastrukturer har det blitt klart at den raskt økende digitaliseringen av det moderne samfunn går hånd i hånd med sikkerhetsutfordringer. Mens kriminelle bruker cyberangrep for å berike seg selv ser stormakter i økende grad cyberspace som en arena for konflikt, der offensive cyberoperasjoner for å stjele hemmeligheter eller sabotere vital infrastruktur hos sine motstandere er blitt en daglig aktivitet. 

Hva cybersikkerhet er, hvordan det forstås og praktiseres er det derimot lite enighet om. Mens cybersikkerhetsindustrien ser på problemene utfra en teknisk forståelse som fordrer en teknisk løsning i et slags katt og mus spill mellom angriper og forvarer, ser politikere og strateger dette som et stormaktsspill der angrep ofte er det beste forsvar. Disse ulike tolkningene av hva cybersikkerhet er og hvordan det kan oppnås danner grunnlaget for CYKNOW. 

CYKNOW starter fra premisset om at hva cybersikkerhet er ikke er gitt, men blir til som et resultat av forskjellige prosesser som konfigurerer ulike aktører, praksiser, teknologier og diskurser. Konfigurasjoner som følgelig produserer ulike måter å forstå, erfare og praktisere det som vi allment refererer til som cybersikkerhet. Altså at cybersikkerhet bør forstås som en pågående prosess formet av ulike elementer som gjensidig former hverandre. 

CYKNOW vil fremme forståelsen av cybersikkerhet, samt fremme den teoretiske og metodiske cybersikkerhetsforskningen spesielt. I tillegg til å flytte den akademiske forskningsagendaen rundt cybersikkerhet og internasjonal politikk, er CYKNOW designet for å fasilitere økt forståelse mellom de tekniske og politiske miljøer, samt å informere og utvide politiske debatter rundt cybersikkerhet og dens implikasjoner.

For å fremme forståelsen av cybersikkerhet og for å flytte den akademiske forskningsagendaen har deltagerne i CYKNOW i 2023 deltatt og presentert artikler på en rekke internasjonale akademiske konferanser og workshops. I tillegg har deltagerne diskutert og presentert pågående arbeid med relevante tekniske og politiske miljøer.

With the rapid digitalization of modern societies, exploitation and attacks on digital networks is also surging. As a result, the security of digital systems, or cybersecurity, has become a priority for states and globally. Governments have recognized that protection of digital critical infrastructure and functions is a key national security task, as states increasingly weaponize digital code to intrude into one another’s networks. Still, decision-makers struggle to fully understand and comprehend the threat, and similarly face challenges when designing strategies and means to prevent, mitigate and respond to attacks. 

Familiar security frameworks and measures, such as defense and deterrence, appear outmoded in the rapidly evolving digital world. This knowledge gap is mirrored in the social science, where dominant theories and models treat cybersecurity as something objectively given, rather than the result of a sociotechnical process. As a consequence, cybersecurity remains academically elusive.

This project will help fill this gap through a novel analytical framework that combines social science and technology studies. The aim is to explore how the digital threat landscape is understood among policy makers and engineers alike, how this knowledge is conveyed between them, and how particular cybersecurity policies and practices emerge as a result.

Cyber security, knowledge and practices (CYKNOW)

Tidlig og spesifikk diagnosestilling av demenspasienter er vanskelig. I 2010 har vi funnet ett nytt gen som er ansvarlig for transportfunksjonen i blod-hjerne skranken (www.pahnkelab.eu). Genet ABCC1 er ansvarlig for å utskille Abeta fra hjernen og er ødelagt eller nedsatt i funksjonen når pasienter utvikler Alzheimer demens. Vi har utviklet nye metoder for å måle ABCC1 funksjonen, bl.a. en metode som benytter radioaktive stoffer for å bestemme aktiviteten av transporteren i blod-hjerne skranken i musemodeller. I det planlagte internasjonale prosjektet skal vi etablere metoden for mennesker sånn at den kan benyttes for å bestemme pasienter som kunne behandles med ABCC1 aktivatorer. I tillegg skal vi utvikle ligne metoder for ABCA7. Både ABCC1 og ABCA7 er risikofaktorer for demensutvikling når funksjonen er nedsatt.
PETABC konsortium består av partner fra Norge (koordinator), Sverige, Latvia, Tyskland, Frankrike, Østerrike og Tsjekkia.

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) expresses different ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, which control the access of endogenous and exogenous compounds from the blood into the brain as well as their removal from the brain into the blood. The export function of the BBB is of increasing importance and is moving continuously into the focus of research on neurodegenerative diseases (ND). We have described for the first time that the ABC transporter C1 (ABCC1) is exceptionally important for the export of metabolites from the brain, especially for amyloid-ß (Aß). In 2019, the first
ABCC1 mutation was found in a family from Phoenix (USA) with inherited clinical Fronto-temporal Lobe Degeneration (FTD) and histological AD unpublished data. Apart from ABCC1, several other ABC transporters have been linked to NDs. Amongst them, a potential role of ABCA7 has been discovered in a large genome-wide association study. We hypothesized that ABC transporter function can be used to determine the impairment and remaining capacity of the BBB export in individual patients in vivo with different NDs (AD, PD, LBD, PSP). Moreover, ABC transporters may be therapeutically targeted to enhance the Aß export capacity of the BBB. To this end, we performed the drainAD phase IIa study (NCT03417986) to investigate the potential role of ABCC1 as a new diagnostic and treatment target for AD. The study showed that patients and controls excrete Aß40 and Aß42 in a time-dependent manner, presumably according to their BBB ABCC1 function. To further advance this novel therapeutic concept, methodology is critically needed to directly measure cerebral ABCC1 function in vivo in patients. Over the last years, partners of this consortium have performed multiple in vitro and functional animal studies in vivo to describe the function of ABCC1 and ABCA7, and have established a new positron emission tomography (PET) protocol to measure ABCC1 function in the rodent brain, which potentially can be used in
patients.

PET analyses of ABC transporter function for diagnostics and stratification of dementia patients

The Ny-Ålesund Terrestrial Ecosystem Flagship focuses on ecosystem-based research on tundra, fresh water and soil in and around Ny-Ålesund (Coulsen et al. 2010; Pedersen et al. 2016). The Terrestrial Ecosystem Flagship group has in the past 3 years successfully organized and held workshops aimed at bringing researchers together to collaborate on writing a joint review manuscript of terrestrial research activities in Ny-Ålesund (Pedersen et al. in review). This highlighted key knowledge gaps currently existing in terrestrial research in and around Ny-Ålesund. This new proposal aims at building on the network and collaboration already established within the Terrestrial Ecosystem Flagship group at Ny-Ålesund and progress from literature review to multi-party and multi-disciplinary collaborative research projects in the field. With a combined network and workshop project, our primary objective is to bring together national and international researchers to develop existing and initiate new collaborations, and to start and conduct a small pilot study. The pilot study revolves around existing herbivore exclosure sites and permanent monitoring stations accessible from Ny-Ålesund, which offer the potential for development of a large and timely multidisciplinary project, utilizing the diverse expertise in the Flagship group. It is our objective that this enhanced collaboration and the joint pilot study will lead to the development of a new joint external grant application (e.g. Horizon 2020). To achieve this we will organize two workshops and one network meeting. The first workshop is planned to be held back-to-back with the Svalbard Science Conference in Oslo, 2 and 3 November 2021, while the network meeting and pilot study will be conducted at Ny-Ålesund in the summer of 2022. The second, and final, workshop will focus on possible calls for external funds to create a joint research proposal for a larger project based on the lessons learned from the small pilot study.

The Terrestrial Ecosystem Flagship in Ny-Ålesund: From workshops to research projects

AIHABs-prosjektet, som står for "Artificial Intelligence for Harmful Algal Blooms", er et banebrytende forsøk på å løse et stort miljøproblem ved hjelp av avanserte teknologier. Målet med prosjektet er å bruke kunstig intelligens (AI) for å bedre forstå og forutsi forekomst, spredning og skjebne for skadelige algeblomster (HABs) i innlandsvannkropper. Etter en analyse med flere kriterier ble to steder med dokumentert historie om HABs (ett i Spania og ett i Tsjekkia) identifisert som de mest egnede for studien.

En HAB er en rask økning i antallet giftige alger i et vann, noe som kan skade andre organismer i vannet, mennesker eller miljøet. Blomstringene kan produsere giftige stoffer som kan påvirke helsen til fisk, marine pattedyr og fugler, og kan også utgjøre en risiko for menneskers helse hvis vannet brukes til drikke eller rekreasjon.

AIHABs-prosjektet utnytter de siste innovasjonene innen nanosensor-teknologi, fjernmåling og maskinlæring. Nanosensorer er en nøkkelkomponent i AIHABs-prosjektet, da de gir sanntids, nøyaktig data om vannkvalitet, som er avgjørende for effektiv HAB-deteksjon og -ledelse. Fjernmåling gir store og repetitive observasjoner av vannkroppene, noe som gjør det mulig å kartlegge og overvåke endringer i vannkvalitetsparametere som har blitt identifisert som forløpere for HABs. Til slutt brukes maskinlæringsalgoritmer til å analysere store mengder data om vannkvalitet, værforhold og andre relevante faktorer. Denne datan brukes deretter til å identifisere mønstre og forutsi sannsynligheten for HABs.

Med hjelp av AI arbeider AIHABs-prosjektet for å forbedre evnen til å oppdage og reagere på HABs, og til slutt beskytte menneskers helse, vannlevende liv og miljø. Ved å kombinere kraften til AI med tradisjonelle overvåkningsmetoder, representerer AIHABs-prosjektet et pionerarbeid for å begrense virkningene av disse skadelige hendelsene

Eutrophication of water bodies and global warming in Europe are contributing to the increment of cyanobacteria to
excessive levels, causing Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Cyanobacteria are very well-known producers of secondary
metabolites that very frequently are toxic to humans and other organisms. Those metabolites, called in general
cyanotoxins, are one of the issues of maximum concern in reference to water quality and effects on population. They
appear very frequently in water bodies in Europe, are highly toxic, harming human health and the aquatic
ecosystems, and many of them are almost unknown in terms of producers and ecological dynamics. Thus,
monitoring and early detection of HABs is essential for the establishment of effective water governance policies.
AIHABs is a multidisciplinary innovative initiative aimed at developing an integrated evaluation system to forecast
the risk derived from the presence of emerging cyanotoxins in inland and coastal ecosystems. The innovation of this
proposal resides at merging tools as last generation Artificial Intelligence (AI), remote sensing, nanosensors,
hydrodynamic modelling and massive genetic sequencing with the joint purpose of providing an early warning
system to decision making authorities in terms of risk to the population. The predicting modelling effort will allow a
timely action to minimize the risks of consuming surface waters or using them as recreational resources when the
waterbodies are prone to produce toxic cyanobacterial blooms.

AI-powered Forecast for Harmful Algal Blooms

Hvorfor øker korrupsjon på verdensbasis, selv om alle relevante internasjonale organisasjoner er enige i at den må bekjempes? Alle er mot korrupsjon. Haider al-Abadi, tidligere statsminister i Irak, har uttalt at korrupsjon er farligere enn terrorisme. Kofi Annan og pave Frans er enige om at korrupsjon er et moralsk onde, og løsningen er en global etikk. Men hvorfor har de tallrike tiltakene rettet mot å heve den etiske standarden og øke transparens og ansvarlighet så liten effekt? For å svare på disse avgjørende spørsmålene bruker LUXCORE teorier og kvalitative metoder fra antropologi, kritisk kriminologi og kulturteori, med det mål å utvikle en innovativ kritisk teori om korrupsjon. Prosjektet er tuftet på to grunnleggende innsikter: for det første er korrupsjon i seg selv understøttet av en kriminogen moralsk kultur, nemlig 'svindelens moraløkonomi'. For det andre er korrupsjon og luksus uløselig forbundet. Aktørene nyter godt av trassindustrien (defiance industry leverer luksusvarer og tjenester som sikrer konfidensialitet) og etterlevelsesindustrien (compliance industry hjelper aktører med å framstå som etiske). Trassindustrien er tuftet på svindelens moraløkonomi og former etterlevelsesindustrien som jo egentlig skulle bekjempe den. Flere etiske krav i form av parametre og tallverdier ser ikke ut til å være noen løsning. LUXCOREs hovedmål er å forstå hvorfor det er slik. Vi vil analysere svindelens moraløkonomi gjennom konkrete case-studier av luksussektoren og trassindustrien (arbeidspakke 1), etterlevelse i kultursektoren (arbeidspakke 2), politisk korrupsjon, populisme og antikorrupsjonsarbeid (arbeidspakke 3), med det overordnede formål å generere en original og nyskapende teori om korrupsjon og svindelens moraløkonomi (arbeidspakke 4). Det er kun et radikalt annerledes teoretisk perspektiv som vil gjøre det mulig å komme forbi dialektikken mellom trass og etterlevelse, en dialektikk som hindrer oss i å bekjempe korrupsjon. Prosjektet har etablert nettsider under forskningsgruppen Algorithmic Governance Research Network på algorithmic-governance.com hvor nye publikasjoner, arrangementer og andre resultater blir omtalt. Prosjektdeltakerne fortsetter å intervjue, utføre feltarbeid og annen datainnsamling, og de har også arrangert flere workshops, konferanser og konferansepaneler, publisert artikler og bokkapitler, holdt foredrag og opptrådt i media. Den første sentrale monografien fra prosjektet ble publisert: Compliance-Industrial Complex: The Operating System of a Pre-Crime Society (T.Ø. Kuldova, 2022, Palgrave Pivot), som omhandler problematikken rundt etterlevelse eller "compliance". Den andre monografien skrevet av Tereza Østbø Kuldova, Jardar Østbø og Thomas Raymen kommer ut i januar 2024 under tittel Luxury and Corruption: Challenging the Anti-Corruption Consensus med Bristol University Press (https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/luxury-and-corruption). Monografi skrevet av Cris Shore, sammen med Susan Wright, Audit Culture: How Indicators and Rankings are Reshaping the World - Anthropology, Culture and Society kommer ut i februar 2024 med Pluto Press. Begge bøker skal lanseres på vår avsluttende konferanse neste år. For tiden jobber vi med å ferdigstille redigert bok basert på den tidligere konferansen ved Historisk Museum i Oslo (Compliance/Defiance Through Luxury, Art and Antiquities). Den redigerte boken med tittel Compliance, Defiance and ‘Dirty Luxury’ : New Perspectives on Anti-Corruption in Elite Contexts (eds. Kuldova, T. Ø., Østbø, J. & Shore, C.), kommer ut etter plan høsten 2024 med Palgrave Macmillan og vi jobber nå med å ferdigstille den. Audrey Millet, ny prosjektmedlem siden august 2023, har også sikret bokkontrakt for en monografi om luksus moteindustri, korrupsjon og kriminalitet. Vi jobber også med å fullføre flere artikler og organisere avslutningskonferansen.

Why is corruption still increasing worldwide, despite universal recognition by all relevant international organizations that it needs to be fought? Kofi Annan and Pope Francis alike agree that corruption is evil – a moral problem, with global ethics as a solution. But why do the numerous measures to improve ethical standards and increase transparency and accountability have little effect? To answer these pressing questions, LUXCORE utilizes theories and qualitative methods from anthropology, critical criminology and cultural theory to develop a novel, critical theory of corruption. We start out from two basic recognitions: First, corruption is itself underpinned by a criminogenic moral culture, the ‘moral economy of fraud’. Second, corruption and luxury are inextricably linked. Entities simultanelously make use of the defiance industry (suppliers of luxury goods and services to ensure confidentiality) and the compliance industry (helping them appear as ethical). Underpinned by the moral economy of fraud, the defiance industry shapes the compliance industry that is supposed to combat it. More ethical requirements, in the form of ever more parameters and quantifiables, do not appear to be the solution. LUXCORE’s main objective is to understand why, by analysing the moral economy of fraud through concrete case studies of the (WP1) luxury sector and the defiance industry, (WP2) compliance in the luxury sector, and (WP3) political corruption, populism, and anti-corruption, to generate (WP4) an original and novel theory of corruption and the moral economy of fraud. Only a radically different theoretical lens will allow us to transgress the dialectic of defiance and compliance that prevents us from actually tackling corruption. The output will be 1 jointly written monograph, 13 peer-reviewed journal articles; 1 special journal issue; 1 co-edited volume, 6 peer-reviewed book chapters, 4 public workshops and 2 public conferences, and 1 dialogue forum with stakeholders.

Luxury, Corruption and Global Ethics: Towards a Critical Cultural Theory of the Moral Economy of Fraud

Både nasjonalt og internasjonalt ser vi at politiet slutter opp om bruken av kunstig intelligens (AI) som beslutningsverktøy for å forebygge kriminalitet og uorden. Bruken av digital teknologi og den voksende rollen til private sikkerhetsselskaper, teknologiselskaper og konsulentselskaper, bidrar til å endre politiet og hvordan vi sikrer sosial orden og sikkerhet, håndhever lov og forhindrer og etterforsker kriminalitet. Vi vet lite om hvordan disse grunnleggende endringene påvirker politiets kulturer. For å bøte på dette kunnskapshullet, samler AGOPOL et team på 15 forskere fra kultur- og områdestudier, antropologi, kriminologi, sosiologi, historie, litteratur og jus. Prosjektet baserer seg på kvalitativ og etnografisk forskning om politiarbeid i Norge, Russland, India, Brasil og Sør-Afrika. Prosjektet skal utvikle en komparativ tverrkulturell analyse av politiarbeid som et globalt digitalisert prosjekt. Endringer i politikulturer vil analyseres i lys av hvordan sikkerhetsspørsmål knyttes sammen med nye måter å bruke data på, og i økende grad selges som en vare på markedet. Vi undersøker hvordan algoritmisk styring påvirker samfunnet og samhandling mellom politi og publikum. Dette innebærer å analysere uintenderte konsekvenser, endringer i kunnskapskulturer, hvorvidt det bidrar til skjevheter politikontroll, og hvordan det påvirker legitimitet og tillit i samfunnet. Hensikten er å fremme kunnskap om hvordan fremskritt innen kunstig intelligens former politiarbeid i forskjellige kulturelle, politiske, juridiske og økonomiske sammenhenger. I hvilken grad politiet påvirkes av digitalisering, organisering og managementkonsepter spiller seg ulikt ut avhengig av logikker, praksiser og forestillinger om digitaliseringens muligheter. De komparative og kvalitative analysene viser at de spesifikke kulturelle forholdene danner betingelser for hvordan de nye forutseende politi verktøyene tas opp. I India, Brazil, Russland og Sør-Afrika ser det teknologiske skiftet ut til å være en viktigere driver for denne utviklingen sammenlignet med Norge hvor nye managementkonsepter og organisering spiller en sterkere rolle. Denne forskjellen kan henge sammen med juridiske forhold og en tilbakeholdenhet med å endre lovverket i tillegg til de kulturelle tradisjonene.  
Både datainnhenting og analyser pågår fortsatt. Konferanser og Work Shops er gjennomført etter planen og vi er godt i gang med planlegging og organisering av fremtidige. Flere artikler, en bok og flere bokkapitler er publisert. Vi har formidlet resultater både i akademiske settinger og gjennom populærvitenskapelige medier.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is the technology of the future that will radically transform the world we live in. AI and the growing role of private security, tech and consultancy companies, are reshaping policing and how we ensure social order and security, enforce law, and prevent and investigate crime. However, this ongoing radical transformation of our world is little understood. To change that, AGOPOL brings together a team of 15 established scholars and young talented researchers from cultural and area studies, anthropology, sociology, history, literature, and law and based in 9 countries, to develop a ground-breaking comparative cultural analysis of policing as a global digitized and hybrid project. Based on ethnographic research in Norway, Russia, India, Brazil, and South Africa, we will leverage comparative cross-cultural analysis and generate a novel understanding of cultures of policing – both within and beyond the police. We will analyse the impact of algorithmic governance on society and those policed – from the unintended consequences, algorithmic injustices, and harms related to these new modes of policing, to their impact on legitimacy and societal trust. Our analysis will deal with issues such as the underlying cultural conditions shaping the use of AI technologies in policing; the transformation of institutional cultures stemming from the technological change; the transformation of knowledge cultures with the increasing dominance of datafied ‘truth’; the interaction of algorithmic governance and cultures of policing; and, perhaps most importantly, the global cultural transformation as an effect of the intertwined processes of datafication, securitization, and commodification of security. AGOPOL will result in a number of scholarly publications (3 special journal issues, 21 peer-reviewed journal articles, 2 books, 16 book chapters) and events (3 international workshops, 3 international conferences), as well as a website and a series of short movies.

Algorithmic Governance and Cultures of Policing: Comparative Perspectives from Norway, India, Brazil, Russia, and South Africa

The project's name is "Typology of Migration Myths: Theoretical/Methodological Questions", and my research deals with the ways in which migration and migrants are represented culturally in narratives about migration. 

The extended area of the study is migration literature, with a focus on literary texts depicting migration to Great Britain from the Caribbean after World War 2 and from Central Eastern European countries after the EU integration. I examine in my study six selected literary texts falling into the category of literature about migration to Great Britain from the Caribbean after World War 2 and from Central Eastern European countries after the EU integration, which incorporate and challenge migration myths as propaganda instruments employed to explain and justify the origin, the structure, and the functioning of the British society as a community framed on the logic of “us” and “them” and the perpetuation of colonial asymmetrical power relations between migrants and natives in contemporary British society.  

The overall purpose of the project is to develop a typological approach in the study of migration myths facilitating the understanding of historical and artistic narratives of migration. The methodological approach entails to combine the study of historical and political developments in the field of migration with the analysis of literature and related forms of fictional representations of migration.

The specific objective of the study is to explore how literature about migration engages critically the instrumental employment of migration myths as political strategy meant to perpetuate (post/neo)colonial mental models in contemporary Europe, particularly in Great Britain. 
The provisional title of the thesis is: Cosmopolitan Voices: Migration, Myths, and Power in Selected Narratives of Migration from the Caribbean and Central Eastern Europe to the UK.

MOVES – Migration and Modernity: Historical and Cultural Challenges – Topfinancing

Tiltak for å redusere klimagassutslipp må oppskaleres raskt dersom Parisavtalens mål skal være innen rekkevidde. Samtidig har selv moderate tiltak i mange europeiske land blitt sett på som sosialt urettferdige, og møtt med protester som har ført til at tiltakene har blitt svekket eller blokkert. JUSTDECARB undersøker hvorfor klimapolitikken kan oppfattes som sosialt urettferdig og produsere ‘vinnere’ og ‘tapere’, hvordan nye grønne jobber og grønn økonomisk vekst kan motvirke slik sosial urettferdighet, og hvordan polarisering og motstand dermed kan unngås.
 
JUSTDECARB har bragt sammen forskere fra fire forskjellige disipliner innen samfunnsvitenskap og humaniora (filosofi, statsvitenskap, samfunnsøkonomi og juss) på tvers av fire land (Norge, Storbritannia, Tsjekkia og Østerrike). De overordnede målsetninger er:

1. Bidra med kunnskap om hvordan klimaomstilling kan gjøres sosialt rettferdig og politisk robust.
2. Utvikle en ‘verktøykasse’ for å hjelpe europeiske beslutningstakere å styre omstillingsprosesser i en sosialt rettferdig og politisk robust retning. Dette arbeidet resulterte  i en 72-siders rapport med tittelen “Just and robust transitions to net zero – A framework to guide national policy” publisert både på trykk og digitalt. Den ble lansert på et frokostseminar i Oslo 27.oktober i år.

Det norske bidraget til den første målsetninga fokuserer på motstand mot klimapolitiske virkemidler og polarisering av klimapolitikk. Bidraget omfatter to case-studier og to studier basert på survey-data. 
Det første case-studiet tar for seg Norge og Storbritannia, med fokus på kampanjer fra aktivister som har politisert spørsmål om petroleumsproduksjon og ledet til mer kontrovers rundt krav om nedfasing og etter hvert utfasing av olje- og gassutvinning. Dette er i økende grad et polarisert politikkfelt med sterke spenninger blant politikere, interessegrupper og befolkningen generelt. Det andre case-studiet sammenligner perspektiver på rettferdig omstilling knyttet til utfasing av kull i spesielt kullavhengige byer i Tsjekkia og Østerrike. Begge case-studiene vil baseres på ekspertintervjuer samt analyse av dokumenter slik som offentlige utredninger, analyser, rapporter, partiprogrammer og offentlige uttalelser.

Den første survey-baserte studien ser på bompenger, et annen polariserende politikk-område møtt med sterk motstand fra deler av befolkningen. Ved hjelp av data om rundt 2000 nordmenn, utforsker vi hva som kjennetegner motstandere av bompenger. Et sentralt funn er at holdninger knyttet til klimaendringer, miljø og høyrepopulisme henger tett sammen med motstand mot bompenger. Mangel på alternative transportmåter er ikke en sterk predikator, mens å eie en bil er forbundet med økt motstand. 

Den siste studien utvider omfanget til åtte ulike politiske virkemidler - som dekker prisbaserte virkemidler, økt fornybar energiproduksjon samt redusert petroleumsproduksjon. Her finner vi at nordmenn kan deles inn i to distinkte leire: de som er positive eller relativt nøytrale til alle virkemidler unntatt økt vannkraftproduksjon, versus de som er sterkt imot prisbaserte virkemidler og redusert oljeutvinning, mens de er litt mer delt i synet på de øvrige virkemidler. Studiet gir nyanserte karakteristikker av tilhengere og motstandere. En sterk aldersgradient er særlig drevet av støtte blant de under tretti og motstand fra personer i femtiårene. Inntekt er en svak predikator for politiske holdninger, mens det er klare skiller mellom by og land samt mellom de med universitetsutdanning og de med teknisk eller yrkesfaglig utdanning. 

I begge de survey-baserte studiene, finner vi at syn på innvandring er blant de sterkeste forklaringsvariablene for holdninger til klimapolitikk. Disse resultatene diskuteres i lys av nyere litteratur som indikerer at motstand mot klimapolitikk utgjør en del av et større holdningskompleks som signaliserer motstand mot samfunnsendringer generelt, og henger sammen med høyrepopulistiske holdninger.

The scientific objective will be pursued via two research themes. The first theme aims to fill critical knowledge gaps concerning the philosophy, politics and economics of transitional “winners” and “losers”, pertaining to processes of decarbonisation, via novel, singledisciplinary research projects. One such project will use philosophical methods to clarify the conceptual and normative issues at the heart of the “social justice” dimension of decarbonisation. The second project will use methods from micro-econometrics and labour economics to better understand the difference in skill requirements between high-carbon and zero-carbon jobs, and the implications of these skill differences for the design of climate policies and complementary labour market measures. The third project will focus on political
polarisation and the political behaviour of winners and losers from decarbonisation. Using both large-n survey and small-n comparative case-study methods, this third project will study how and why opposition to climate policy develops, with a view to improving the political robustness of climate policies. 

Building on this work, and adding wider insights from philosophy, political science, and law, our second research theme aims to develop frameworks for evaluating the justice and robustness of, respectively: processes of public engagement applicable to the design and implementation of climate policy; and substantive climate policies, including redistributive measures. These aims will be pursued through two interdisciplinary, applied research projects.

Finally, to fulfil JUSTDECARB’s policy objective, the project team, in consultation with policymakers and civil society stakeholders, will develop a “toolkit for policymakers” int the form of a report that describes the recommended steps for policymakers to take, and methods to use, as they seek to steer transition processes in a socially just and politically robust direction across the key phases of the policy cycle.

Socially Just and Politically Robust Decarbonisation: A Knowledge Base and Toolkit for Policymakers - JUSTDECARB

How do we heighten awareness of plastic pollution-related issues for all stakeholders across Europe using evidence-based information which cuts through misinformation distortions? How should all participants in the plastic life cycle decide—using data—become more nimble in addressing issues related to increasing amounts of plastic waste in our environment? How do we learn more, on a large scale, about how citizens and consumers think about the plastic life cycle? Enabling citizens, consumers, and other life cycle stakeholders to observe, monitor, and learn about the environmental impacts of plastic pollution requires rethinking approaches to providing access to data and information gathered from multiple sources. PlastiMap aims at creating a collaborative, educational mobile application (“app”) and data platform uniting prior results from interdisciplinary research with new data gathered by citizen scientists across Europe . The pilot app, will include links to high-quality, curated information regarding different kinds of plastics, a plastics footprint calculator  and an interactive educational game  all user-tested and piloted leveraging the educational and governmental networks in the SIAs. Citizen scientists in SIAs will also gather data fed to the platform with specially-equipped drones and wearable sensors, testing and engaging with new environmental sampling technologies. The PlastiMap platform,will exploit advanced data analytics and automatic image recognition techniques to process data and shall serve as a tool to (i) support the prioritisation of Europe’s Plastics Strategy goals; (ii) handle potentially politically sensitive data; (iii) help in developing future prevention, interception, and clean-up initiatives; and (iv) inform governmental decision makers, producers, and others about where and how current recycling and plastic-related legislative efforts fail or could be improved. PlastiMap:
A mobile app for engaging citizens, informing stakeholders, and improving knowledge development and flow by unifying data

Kompetanse innen kjerne- og radiokjemi er essensielt for energiproduksjon basert på kjerneenergi, produksjon og utvikling av radiofarmaka, beredskap ved ulykker og krigs-/terrorhandlinger mot nukleære installasjoner eller nukleært materiale, samt flere andre viktige industri- og samfunnsanvendelser. Utdanning og kompetanseutvikling på dette området er utilstrekkelig i Norge, noe som vekker bekymring hos både næringsliv og norske myndigheter. Dette ble nylig understreket da Kunnskapsdepartementet etablerte 40 nye studieplasser spesielt rettet mot nukleære anvendelser. Prosjektet A-CINCH-Nor, som er en del av EU-prosjektet A-CINCH, har i løpet av de tre årene det varte, fokusert på behovet for økt rekruttering til denne fagområdet og økt både kvalitet og kvantitet innen utdanningssektoren på dette området. CINCH står for "Cooperation In education and training in Nuclear and radiocHemistry".  A'en i inneværende prosjekt står for "augmented" og reflekterer fokuset på å inkludere utvidet og virtuell virkelighet ("Augmented Reality" (AR) og "virtual reality" (VR)) i læringsverktøyene. Prosjektet hadde som mål, i tillegg til utvikling av AR og VR verktøy, å fullføre utdanningsverktøyene fra de tre tidligere CINCH-prosjektene (2010-2020), samt gjøre dem alle tilgjengelige for fortsatt bruk, også utenfor CINCH-konsortiet.
Kjernekjemi ved UiO har aktivt bidratt i CINCH-prosjektene og spesielt fokusert på å utvikle fjernstyrte laboratorieoppgaver ("RoboLab"), en wiki kalt NucWik for deling av undervisningsmateriell innen faget, en MOOC - "Massive Open On-line Course" - i radiokjemi med mål om å øke forståelsen for faget og rekruttere nye studenter, samt utviklingen av et virtuelt radiokjemilaboratorium med øvelser som ligner på de studentene typisk utfører i en vanlig radiokjemikurslab. VR-laboratoriet bruker de samme verktøyene som typisk finnes i dataspill der man kontrollerer en avatar til å utføre spesifikke oppgaver. Vi har også integrert disse verktøyene i våre kurs innen radioaktivitet og radiokjemi, og vi har fått svært positive tilbakemeldinger fra studentene.

Expertise in nuclear and radiochemistry (NRC) is of strategic relevance in the nuclear energy sector and in many vital applications. The need for radiochemistry expertise will even increase as the focus shifts from safe nuclear power plant operation to decontamination and decommissioning, waste management and environmental monitoring. The non-energy fields of NRC applications are even much broader ranging from life sciences – radiopharmaceuticals, radiological diagnostics and therapy – through dating in geology and archaeology, (nuclear) forensics and safeguards operations, to radiation protection and radioecology.
The A-CINCH project primarily addresses the loss of the young generation's interest for nuclear knowledge by focusing on secondary / high school students and teachers and involving them by the “Learn through Play” concept. This will be achieved by bringing advanced educational techniques such as state-of the art 3D virtual reality NRC laboratory, Massive Open Online Courses, RoboLab distance operated robotic experiments, Interactive Screen Experiments, NucWik database of teaching materials, or Flipped Classroom, into the NRC education. All the new and existing tools wrapped-up around the A-CINCH HUB – a user-friendly and easy-to-navigate single point of access – will contribute increasing the number of students and trainees in the field of nuclear and radiochemistry. Nuclear awareness will be further increased by the High School Teaching Package, Summer Schools for high school students, Teach the Teacher package and many others. Additionally, successful educational and training tools from previous projects will be continued and further developed.
Networking is an important part of the project, facilitated by having ENEN as one of the partners and by having structural links with other Euratom projects, the EuChemS, the NRC-Network as well as by additional links with other end users and stakeholders including the high schools.

Augmented Cooperation In Education and Training in Nuclear and Radiochemistry - Norwegian Part

THREAT-DEFUSER utforsker «myke» informasjonsstrategier i massemedia og sosiale media som kan brukes i hybrid krigføring. Vi undersøker hvordan Russland oppfattes i Norge, og hvordan Norge oppfattes i Russland i et sikkerhetspolitisk perspektiv.

THREAT-DEFUSER er et tverrfaglig forskningsprosjekt som kombinerer moderne verktøy fra statsvitenskap, lingvistikk og medievitenskap til å utvikle nye metoder. Mens forskningen har en tendens til å fokusere på den engelskspråklige verden, bryter THREAT-DEFUSER med denne trenden og retter i stedet søkelyset mot russisk og to offisielle språk i Norge: norsk og nord-samisk. Tre kulturelle perspektiver åpnes opp: 1) et viktig verdensspråk, siden russisk er det nest mest brukte språket på Internett, 2) et nasjonalt majoritetsspråk (norsk), og 3) et minoritets- og urfolksspråk (nord-samisk). Verktøyene utarbeidet i THREAT-DEFUSER-prosjektet er overførbare til andre språk, kulturer og domener, og vil bli delt som åpen kildekode med det internasjonale forskersamfunnet.

THREAT-DEFUSER formidler forskningsresultatene aktivt til politiske beslutningstagere (gjennom briefinger og seminarer), til akademikere (via velrennomerte tidsskrift med åpen tilgang) og til allmennheten gjennom et nettsted som vil bli oppdatert jevnlig, podcaster, skolebesøk og en app som gjør det mulig å reagere raskt på stadige skiftninger i nyheter og sosiale medier. THREAT-DEFUSER analyserer Russlands stadig viktigere rolle i utenriks- og sikkerhetspolitikk, også når det gjelder hybrid krigføring. De samme verktøyene brukes til å analysere Russlands holdning til Europa som er av direkte betydning for norsk-russiske relasjoner.

THREAT-DEFUSER increases Norwegian capacity to address challenges of hybrid warfare in relation to Norway’s biggest neighbor: Russia. We combine linguistic analysis of the big data of language corpora and path-breaking techniques developed in the Czech Republic with social science approaches such as document, discourse, and intersectional analyses of how language is gendered, racialized, and classed to trigger emotional reactions in populations and exacerbate conflict cleavages in societies. THREAT-DEFUSER integrates these methods to develop tools of analysis for Russian, North Saami, and Norwegian media. Using quantitative analysis of digitally networked communication and reassessing the acquired data through qualitative approaches, THREAT-DEFUSER identifies the role of disinformation in technologically facilitated dynamics of radicalization. We determine the function and possible effects of these dynamics in contemporary hybrid warfare, and develop concrete evidence-based recommendations for reduced vulnerability and increased resilience of societies and political systems in relation to such incursions.

Work Package (WP) 1 addresses the language of threats through the lenses of previous scholarship, multi-million/billion-word corpora representing North Saami, Norwegian, and Russian. In WP 2, target texts describing threats are extracted from TV, radio, and Internet portals representing the range of possible news sources, and these texts are analyzed for significant differences from normative language in corpora via Keyword/Keymorph Analysis. Media connectivity is the topic of WP3, which assesses the extent to which media sources are interconnected or mutually isolated. WP4 synthesizes the results from WP2-3 and produces qualitative data sets on actual behavior. WP5 provides a website, podcasts and the NewsRadar app to give citizens access to ratings of news sources, plus scholarly articles and evidence briefs.

Mitigating Perceived Threats in Russian and Norwegian Public Discourse

Med utvidelse av tingens-internett (IoT) i forskjellige sektorer, det er estimert at antall tilkoblede enheter vil nå 75 milliarder innen 2025. En av de viktigste bruksområdene til disse enhetene er å føle/måle en eller flere fysiske parametere for overvåking- og/eller aktiveringsformål. Den raske utvikling og massive distribusjon av disse enhetene øker behovet for ny bærekraftig design som tar hensyn til maskinvarebruk og strømforbruk. Dette prosjekt har som mål å utforske en revolusjonerende sekundære bruk av sensornodens antenne for flere parameter måling ved bruk av følsomme sensitive materialer som er utplassert på antenneoverflate. Dette eliminerer den konvensjonelle bruken av sensorintegrerte kretser (IC) og mikrokontrollere, og deres tilhørende strømforbruk. Tanken er å flytte kompleksiteten fra sensorenheten til beregningen av sensordatamottaker stasjonen, hvor signalbehandling og maskinlæringsteknikker benyttes for fjern måling av de fysiske parameterne. Selve sensureringen er gjort ved å detektere endringer på antennestrålingsegenskapene forårsaket av de påførte sensitive materialene på antenneoverflaten. Ideen om å bruke antennen som en aktiv sensor for å måle flere parametere samtidig er nytt. Hvis det lykkes, vil det redusere maskinvarebruken av en standard sensornode med minst 50% (dvs. ingen sensor-IC-er, sampler og prosessor, og minne vil være nødvendig sammen med det tilhørende strømforbruket), noe som resulterer i mer enn dobling av batteriets levetid.

With the expansion of the internet-of-things (IoT) in various sectors, the number of connected devices is expected to reach 75 billion by 2025. One of the main use-cases of such devices is to sense one or more physical parameters for monitoring and/or actuation purposes. The rapid expansion and massive deployment of these devices rise the need for new design consideration to support its future sustainability in terms of hardware use and power consumption. Triggered by this, the MAAS project explores the revolutionary secondary use of the sensor node antenna for multiparameter active sensing purposes using sensitive sensing materials deployed on the antenna surface. This eliminates the conventional use of the sensor integrated circuits (ICs) and microcontrollers, and their associated power consumption. The idea is to move the complexity from the sensor node to the computation of the gateway station, where signal processing and machine learning techniques are employed to remotely sense the physical parameters. This is done by detecting changes on the radiation characteristics of the antenna sensor caused by the applied sensing materials. The idea of using the antenna as a multiparameter active sensor is an absolute novelty. If successful, it will reduce the hardware use of a standard sensor node by at least 50% (i.e. no sensor ICs, sampler and processor, and memory will be needed along with their associated power consumption), resulting in more than doubling their battery lifetime. Strategically, the project will strengthen the research-based professional educations and practices within electronics to meet the current and future needs of experts with the new knowledge and the innovation that the project brings. The ambition is to create a new generation of IoT devices that use the antenna not only for radiating electromagnetic waves, but also has a secondary functionality of actively sensing multiple physical parameters (without using sensor ICs and a microprocessor).

Multiparameter Active Antenna Sensor

Norge produserer årlig rundt 600 000 tonn biprodukter fra landbruks- og matindustri. I dag brukes den største andelen av disse biproduktene til applikasjoner med lav verdi, forbrenning eller det kastes som avfall. Det er et stort samfunnsmessig og industrielt behov for å utvikle prosesser som verdsetter tilgjengelige biprodukter fra landbruket på en bærekraftig måte til å produsere høyverdiprodukter. BYPROVALUE vil benytte den allsidige metabolismen til oljeholdige sopp og utvikle en helt ny og unik verdikjede for å verdsette biprodukter fra landbruks- og matindustri, animalsk fett og proteinbiprodukter, mask fra bryggeri og sukkerrik lignocellulose (sideprodukt fra skogbruk), til et produkt med flere funksjoner: en multifunksjonell biomasse produsert av muggsopp. Denne biomassen kan brukes i sin helhet til dyrefôr eller den fraksjoneres ned til ingredienser med høy verdi: lipider og pigmenter til fôr og mat, kitin/kitosan til vannbehandlingsapplikasjoner og betaglukaner til medisinsk bruk.
I den første fasen av prosjektet begynte vi å evaluere forskjellige rest råstoff som et vekstsubstrat for de oljeaktige røde gjærene. Følgende rest råstoff er involvert i evalueringsscreeningen - lignocellulosehydrolysater, avfall glyserol og urea, rester av animalsk fett, mask og avfallsgjær fra bryggeri. Det har blitt vist at kombinering av lignocellulosehydrolysater og ureaavfall fra fiskeoljeproduksjonen gir høy biomasse- og lipidproduksjon.

EU generates around 26 million tonnes of by-products across the agriculture and food supply chain annually with estimated associated costs of 43 billion euros for waste disposal.  Only Norway produces around 600 000 tons of agriculture and food supply chain by-products annually. Today, the lions share of these by-products is used for low-value applications, combustion or disposed as waste. There is a huge societal and industrial need for developing processes for valorizing available agriculture by-products in a sustainable way for producing high-value product(s). 
BYPROVALUE will utilize the versatile metabolism of oleaginous fungi and develop a completely new and unique value chain for valorizing Norwegian agricultural supply chain by-products - animal fat and protein by-products, rest materials from brewery and sugar-rich lignocellulose side-streams of forestry into a product with several functionalities: a multifunctional fungal biomass. Multifunctional fungal biomass could be utilised as a whole in animal feed and pet food, or fractionated down to  high-value ingredients - lipids and pigments for feed and food, chitin/chitosan for water treatment applications and beta-glucans for medical applications. 
BYPROVALUE will address the above challenges by an international and multidisciplinary consortium with top expertise in fungal biotechnology, fungal fermentation and advanced analysis of fungal metabolites as well as expertise in techno-economical evaluation of novel processes and bio-products. The project partners are the research partners Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), NOFIMA, Slovak University of Technology (STU), Brno University of Technology (BUT), University of Munster (WWU) and Norwegian companies Norilia AS, Nortura SA, Felleskjøpet Agri SA, Biotec Betaglucans AS, Teta vannrensing AS, Ringnes AS and Borregaard AS.

Multifunctional high-value fungal biomass from the Norwegian agriculture supply chain by-products

Overvekt og fedme er et økende problem over hele verden. Resultater fra en studie publisert i Lancet i februar 2024, viser at over én milliard mennesker i verden i 2022 levde med fedme, og at hele 43 prosent av voksne var overvektige. Fedme er forbundet med økt risiko for kroniske sykdommer som diabetes, hjerte- og karsykdom, kreft og dødelighet.

I løpet av de siste årene har to aminosyrer, metionin og cystein, blitt assosiert med utvikling av overvekt og relaterte metabolske sykdommer. Forsøk med gnagere som inntar dietter med lavt innhold av metionin og cystein har gunstig effekt på glukose- og lipidmetabolisme og reduserer kroppsfett. I STAY-prosjektet undersøkte vi om cystein og metionin og relaterte forbindelser er knyttet til metabolske helse og fedme hos mennesker.

Vi gjennomførte en kostholdsintervensjon i friske frivillige deltakere med overvekt og fedme for å evaluere effekten av et plantebasert kosthold med lavt innhold av metionin og cystein på kroppsvekt, kroppssammensetning og energibalanse, samt fedmerelaterte biomarkører (glukose og lipidmetabolisme, aminosyrer, fettsyrer). Total 61 deltakere ble randomisert til en 8 ukers intervensjonen med 55 deltakere som fullførte studien. Datainnsamling pågikk fra mars 2020 frem til mars 2022. Resultater viser at en 8-ukers intervensjon med et svovelaminosyrebegrenset, plantebasert kosthold hos voksne med overvekt og fedme førte til en reduksjon i kroppsvekt og serumkonsentrasjoner av leptin, og en økning i plasmakonsentrasjoner av ketonlegemer. Dietten påvirket også svovelmetabolitter i plasma og urin, og genuttrykk i hvitt fettvev  (doi:10.1186/s12967-023-04833-w.).

Vi har i tillegg analysert data fra en stor nederlandsk befolkningsundersøkelse (Maastricht-studien) for å studere relasjonene til metionin og cystein i kosthold, blod og urin, med kroppsfett og metabolsk sykdom. Vi har i prosjektet utført en rekke analyser av blod og urin for bestemmelse av aminosyrer, appetitthormoner og fettsyreprofil. Første artikkel (doi: 10.1007/s00394-022-03041-4), viser at plasmakonsentrasjoner av metionin og cystein er assosiert med forskjellige fettdepoter; metionin er positivt assosiert med leverfett, mens plasma cystein er assosiert med større generell, sentral og perifer fettmasse. Andre artikkel fra Maastricht-studien (doi:10.1016/j.tjnut.2023.05.008) viser at proteininntak, spesielt fra animalske kilder, er en betydelig determinant for plasmasvovelaminosyrer, og var assosiert med høyere plasmacysteinnivåer.

Dette prosjektet har gitt oss innsikt i hvorvidt aminosyrene metionin og cystein er knyttet til metabolsk helse og fedmeutvikling hos mennesker.

Overweight and obesity lead to metabolic disturbances and increase the overall risk of morbidity and mortality. In the past decade, circulating amino acids have become increasingly recognized as predictors of metabolic risk. Recently, the sulfur-containing amino acids (SAA) methionine and cysteine have been suggested to play roles in development of obesity and related metabolic disease. In animals, dietary restriction of SAA increases insulin sensitivity and reduces adiposity. Research in STAY comprises human interventional and epidemiologic studies to establish the role of dietary, circulating and urinary sulfur amino acids and related compounds as modifiable risk factors in human metabolic health and obesity. We will perform a dietary intervention study in participants with overweight and obesity to evaluate effects of a SAA restricted plant-based diet on body fatness and energy balance, as well as biomarkers and gene expression patterns related to energy metabolism. In addition, we will use data from a large Dutch cohort to investigate whether dietary patterns are associated with SAA in plasma and urine, and with body fat, morbidity and mortality. Genetic data from this cohort will be used to investigate gene-nutrient interactions. The project will use state-of-the-art methodology to assess plasma and urine amino acids, plasma lipids and fatty acid profiles, glucose tolerance, adipokines and appetite-related hormones. Overall, the project can potentially translate the well-described beneficial findings of dietary SAA restriction in animals to humans with obesity. Research in STAY will provide unique insight into the SAA-mediated regulation of energy metabolism, appetite, obesity and metabolic disease. Because an SAA restricted diet is largely plant-based, the STAY project will enhance understanding of the mechanisms by which a plant-based diet low in SAA content can benefit human metabolic health.

METADIS: STAY Sulfur amino acids, energy metabolism and obesity

En rekke kliniske og epidemiologiske studier viser en sammenheng mellom kronisk periodontitt (PD) og Alzheimers sykdom (AD). AD, den vanligste formen for demens, manifesteres med nevroinflammasjon i samsvar med mikrobiologisk infeksjon, inkludert mikroglialaktivering, inflammasome og komplementaktivering samt endrede cytokinprofiler. 
Infeksiøse agenser, inkludert den periodontale patogenet Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g) ble identifisert i hjerner fra AD-pasienter, og postulert å være en etiologisk faktor, men årsakssammenheng er fortsatt svært dårlig undersøkt. I denne søknaden ( I dette prosjektet??) vil vi undersøke i detalj komorbiditeten mellom PD og AD med spesiell vekt på P.g-rollen i patogenesen av AD. For dette formål vil vi: i) etablere en ny, meget sensitiv analyse som muliggjør identifikasjon av tilstedeværelsen av P.g og / eller dens virulensfaktorer i CNS; ii) identifisere virulensfaktorer som er essensielle for P.g-induserte nevrodegenerative endringer i villtypemus og forskjellige murine modeller av AD og etablere en pålitelig modell for identifisering av nye biomarkører ;; iii) evaluere effekten av eliminering av spesifikke periodontale patogener på nivået av inflammatoriske markører som er kjent for å være assosiert med alvorlighetsgrad og / eller progresjon av AD; v) benytte dyremodeller for å gi et bevis på at konseptet oral infeksjon med P.g (eksperimentell PD) påvirker (induserer og / eller akselererer og / eller irriterer) AD; vi) bruke nye, periodontale patogenspesifikke antibakterielle forbindelser rettet mot P.g-glutaminylcykase (pQC) i den innovative tilnærmingen for å forstyrre samlingen av virulensfaktorer og teste om de kan påvirke AD-utvikling og progresjon. Ved å kaste nytt lys over mekanismer som driver komorbiditet av PD i AD, vil fullføringen av prosjektet bane vei for nye tidlige diagnostiske, forebyggende, terapeutiske og overvåkingsstrategier som trengs for vellykket administrering av AD.

A numerous clinical and epidemiological studies show an association between chronic periodontitis and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD, the most common form of dementia, is manifested with neuroinflammation consistent with microbiological infection, including microglial activation, inflammasome and complement activation as well as altered cytokine profiles. Infectious agents, including periodontal pathogen Porphyromonas gingivalis (P.g) were identified in the AD patient brains and postulated to be an etiologic factor but causation is still very poorly investigated. In this proposal we seek to examine in detail the comorbidity between PD and AD with special emphasis on the P.g role in the pathogenesis of AD. To this end we will: i) establish a novel, highly sensitive assay allowing for identification of the presence of P.g and/ or its virulence factors in the CNS; ii) identify virulence factors essential for P.g-induced neurodegenerative changes in wild-type mice and different murine models of AD and establish a reliable model for discovery of novel biomarkers;; iii) evaluate the impact of eradication of specific periodontal pathogens on the level of inflammatory markers known to be associated with severity and/or progression of AD; v) employ animal models to provide a proof of concept that oral infection with P.g (experimental PD) impacts (induces and/or accelerates and/or exasperates) AD; vi) use novel, periodontal pathogen-specific antibacterial compounds targeting P.g glutaminyl cyclase (pQC) in the innovative approach to interfere with the assembly of virulence factors and test if they can affect AD development and progression. By casting new light on mechanisms driving comorbidity of PD in AD the completion of the project will pave the way to novel early diagnostic, preventive, therapeutic and monitoring strategies needed for successful management of AD.

Alzheimer’s disease as a co-morbidity of chronic periodontitis with Porphyromonas gingivalis as a causative link between both diseases

Hovedmålet med Euratom-prosjektet "MEET-CINCH" er å etablere en bærekraftig utdannelse og trening i kjerne- og radiokjemi. Spesielt viktig er det å tilby fleksible kurs som benytter moderne fjernundervisningsmetoder, siden radiokjemi kun tilbys ved et fåtall universiteter. Det norske bidraget til prosjektet har til hensikt å integrere kjerne- og radiokjemiutdannelsen i Norge med det som ellers foregår i Europa. Kjerne- og radiokjemi er et lite forskningsområde i de fleste europeiske land og det er derfor store gevinster å høste ved å samarbeide, både om utvikling og gjennomføring av kurs og treningsopplegg. Således kan Norge dra stor nytte av arbeidet som gjøres i MEET-CINCH prosjektet, men Norge kan også bidra til prosjektet på vesentlige områder, spesielt innenfor elektroniske læringsmetoder. Et eksempel her er det fjernstyrte radiokjemilaboratoriet «RoboLab» som er utviklet ved UiO og som lar studenter gjennomføre nukleære eksperimenter i et virkelig laboratorium via et web-basert kontrollpanel og video-overføring fra laboratoriet.

From 2010 the three CINCH EU-projects, with Norwegian participation in the first two, has developed advanced and coordinated teaching in radiochemistry across EU. The third project will culminate with a range of teaching tools and material that is important for the future of Norwegian teaching and competence building in Nuclear and Radiochemistry. 

Originally Norway was meant to have a significant role in the third CINCH project ("MEET CINCH"), but the absence of NFR funding prevented this. The project therefore had to be restructured and other partners take over planed UiO responsibilities. This has worked out well for the production of the MOOC, but not for the modernization and expansion of the UiO developed "RoboLab" remote controlled radiation laboratory exercises.

During the absence of funding for Norwegian participation, Prof. Omtvedt at UiO has been invited as "Scientific Adviser" to the MEET-CINCH project. Omtvedt has participated in all project meetings and also arranged a workshop in Oslo for the development and modernization of the RoboLab infrastructure. This has been funded by UiO from internal money. 

The current application will enable real Norwegian participation in the final year of the MEET CINCH project. This is important for two reasons: 1) Only UiO has the necessary expertise to upgrade and modernize the RoboLab remote controlled exercises. Without our input there is a real danger that all the work that has been invested in building up these exercises will have been in wain. 2) All the tools that have been developed in the three CINCH projects will be available to teaching Nuclear and Radiochemistry in Norway. This includes close collaboration with the CINCH partners in future joint teaching and application of the CINCH material. NFR funding will also contribute to ensure that the NucWik shared database of Nuclear and radiochemistry teaching material will sustained and openly available.

A Modular European Education and Training Concept In Nuclear and RadioCHemistry - Norwegian Part

Antibiotikaene vi bruker for tiden mister effektiviteten på grunn av fremveksten av resistente bakterier. Derfor er det et presserende behov for å utvikle nye antibiotika. I dette prosjektet har vi som mål å utvikle ligander for et RNA-element, som kontrollerer uttrykkingen av essensielle bakteriegener. Disse ligandene kan da fungere som utgangspunkt for utvikling av fremtidig antibiotika. For å nå dette målet har vi samlet et team av dyktige forskere fra Norge, Tsjekkia, Latvia, Tyskland og Canada, som alle er eksperter på forskjellige fagområder som er essensielle for dette prosjektet.


I den delen av prosjektet som er finansiert av NFR, har vi etablert in vitro transkripsjon av riboswitchen. Videre, med våre samarbeidspartnere i Canada og Tsjekkia har vi etablert en testsystem som kan brukes til å screene tusenvis av forbindelser for  riboswitch-binding og denne testsystemen har nå blitt brukt til å screene biblioteket som er tilgjengelig på CZ-Openscreen. Dette har resultert i en rekke treff. Validering med alternative analysermetoder pågår. Foreløpig er valideringsresultatene ikke entydige, og det arbeides derfor med å utvikle alternative analysemetoder.

In this project, we will explore the TPP riboswitch as a new drug target for antibiotics for key ESKAPE pathogens (E. coli, K. pneumoniae, A. baumannii, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus) and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The TPP riboswitch has already been validated as a drug target, however, potent and drug-like ligands with antibiotic activity are needed as starting points to develop novel strategies for anti-infective treatments. The goal of this proposal is to deliver such compounds. To reach this goal, we have assembled a team of highly skilled researchers from Norway, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Germany, and Canada, who are experts in riboswitch biology, microbiology, compound screening, structure-based drug design, organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Using an innovative assay technology, we will develop a high-throughput assay that monitors simultaneously transcription efficiency and the regulatory activity of the riboswitch, which is crucial for its action, and use this assay to screen the CZ- and EU-OPENSCREEN libraries of lead-like compounds. The hits obtained will be thoroughly validated and the most promising hits will be optimized to improve their affinity. The advanced compounds will be evaluated for antibiotic activity against the key ESKAPE pathogens and Streptococcus pneumoniae. We will also assess the broad-spectrum potential of the compounds and carry out mode of action studies to ensure that the compounds act on target. If the TPP riboswitch holds up to its high promises, this project will pave the way for urgently needed new antibiotics.
