GoNorth - utforsking av Polhavet 2025-2035

GoNorth has its origins in the Continental Shelf Commission's 2009 UN acceptance of the Norwegian demand for an extended shelf in the high north. Knowledge of the shelf is currently limited. Because an extended shelf also entails management responsibility for the shelf’s available and potential resources as well as ecosystems and environment in the corresponding water masses, GoNorth has expanded to include the water column, sea ice and geopolitics of the high north. GoNorth have launched two field cruises in 2022 and 2023 and are now planning a third in 2024. These cruises are international, but based on a strong national consortium. Given the success of the first cruises and the results they have already generated, GoNorth's board has decided to start planning for a next phase that will run from 2025 to 2035. International cooperation, and activities related to and aimed at IPY in 2032-33, will be central to this new phase. The project will investigate new multidisciplinary scientific goals, interesting research locations, possible international collaboration partners, possible collaboration with the national initiative «Framtidens Polahav» and identification and motivation of the next generation of research leaders. Through mobilizing the best science communities, GoNorth will bring Norway to the forefront of knowledge pertaining to the Arctic Ocean, so that we can be and stand out as the leading steward of the Arctic environment and natural resources. The partnership includes 11 Norwegian universities and institutes. This strong consortium possesses unique and leading expertise in all relevant subject areas, and have a significant research infrastructure for e.g. data collection at great ocean depths and under ice.

GoNorth har sitt opphav i Kontinentalsokkelkommisjonen i FNs aksept i 2009 for det norske kravet om en utvidet sokkel i nord. Kunnskapen om sokkelen er liten, med unntak av resultatene fra Oljedirektoratets undersøkelser bak fastsettelse av sokkelens yttergrense i 2003 og 2006. Etter som en utvidet sokkel også medfører forvaltningsansvar for ressursene, økosystemene og miljøet i havområdene over, er GoNorth utvidet til å inkludere vannsøylen, sjøisen og geopolitikken i nord. GoNorth har sjøsatt to tokt i 2022 og 2023 og planlegger et tredje i 2024. Alle er internasjonale samarbeidstokt, med AWI, GEUS og Stockholms Universitet som partnere. Denne søknaden følger av at GoNorth's styre besluttet å starte planleggingen av en neste fase, fra 2025 mot 2035. Satsinger rettet mot IPY i 2032-33 vil være sentrale. GoNorth 2025-2035 har som mål å utvikle et faglig fremragende, økonomisk realiserbart og forvaltningsmessig nyttig Polhavsprogram, og vil bl.a. utrede vitenskapelige mål, viktige lokasjoner, internasjonale samarbeidspartnere, samarbeid med Framtidens Polhav og identifisering av neste generasjon forskningsledere. Gjennom mobilisering av de beste kunnskapsmiljøene, skal GoNorth bringe Norge i front på kunnskap om og i Polhavet, slik at vi kan stå frem som den fremste forvalter av miljøet og naturressursene i nord. Partnerskapet i GoNorth omfatter de fleste store universitetene og instituttene i Norge. Til sammen har vi kompetanse på alle relevante fagområder og rår over betydelig forskningsinfrastruktur for bl.a. datainnsamling på store havdyp og under is. Det er ingen annen rolledeling mellom partnerne enn ulike faglige bidrag. GoNorth gjennomførte i 2016-17 prosjektet "Knowledge Building in the Arctic Ocean", finansiert av UD gjennom Arktis 2030-ordningen, om hvordan et norsk Polhavsprogram kunne se ut. Det omfattet bl.a. en vitenskapelig strategi, logistikkstrategi, og finansieringsstrategi. Dette bygger vi videre på i forprosjektet vi her søker om midler til.
