Forprosjekt for Framtidens Polhav

The eyes of the world are now fixed squarely towards the polar sea where the ice which for hundreds of thousands of years, if not millions, has covered the sea is now rapidly withering away as a consequence of global warming. In just a few decades the artic summer will be free from ice during parts of the year. However, it is not only above the surface where change is happening. Underneath the surface changes in the ocean currents, in biogeochemistry and in the ecosystems are all happening. Norway, as well as the rest of the earth, are all faced with great big challenges related to the administration of our valuable ocean resources in order to secure a sustainable development. A broad Norwegian community of 17 universities and research institutions are now aiming to establish an ambitious and interdisciplinary project which aims to generate the knowledge which is necessary when face with these great challenges; “Fremtidens Polarhav” (the polar oceans of the future). we will shine a spotlight on knowledge about climate, environmental, political, and industrial developments in the polar sea in the years to come, and how these all interplay with surrounding ocean- and land areas.

I Forprosjekt for Framtidens Polhav vil vi utarbeide planer for finansiering, organisering og implementering av Fremtidens Polhav – i tråd med nasjonale og internasjonale forskningsstrategier og politiske føringer. Dette arbeidet vil omfatte etablering av vitenskapelig plan, fremdrifts/implementeringsplan og styringsmekanismer; planlegging av arbeidsmåter så som feltaktivitet, modellsimuleringer og bruk av forskningsinfrastruktur; sikring av åpenhet og nasjonalt og internasjonalt samarbeid; sikre dataflyt; publisering og tilgjengeliggjøring av forskningsdata ihht FAIR prinsipper; planlegge forskerutdanning, brukerinvolvering, og kommunikasjon og utadrettet virksomhet; konkretisering av finansieringsmodell. Arbeidet skal munne ut i en helhetlig søknad for prosjektet Framtidens Polhav, som skal kunne evalueres av et internasjonalt panel. Framtidens Polhav er tenkt som en nasjonal satsing med 17 identifiserte partnere og som skal gå over 10 år. Framtidens Polhav vil utgjøre ryggraden i norsk bidrag til det planlagte internasjonale polaråret i 2032/2033.
