Advanced Membrane-based solutions for CCUS in Shipping

Global CO2 emission levels continue to rise and acceleration in deploying emission reduction technologies of all types across all sectors is required to combat climate change. Shipping industry contributes to about 3% in world's CO2 emissions accounting up to 1076 mtCO2 in 2018 and is projected to rise up to 250% in 2050. Albeit new regulations, technological limitations hinder decarbonisation progress in the industry where alternate fuels are not expected to provide a market-wide rapid solution globally due to their immaturity and lack of supporting infrastructure. Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration(CCUS) solutions offer near to medium term solutions given their maturity and reliability. However, bottlenecks including space and energy constraints, emission restrictions and challenges in offloading, transport, utilisation and/or storage of captured CO2 inhibit CCUS in shipping. The AMbCS project plans to develop and demonstrate an advanced membrane-based CCUS solution for shipping industry using novel membranes and innovative processes at TRL6 to address the challenges and thereby fast track CCUS deployment in shipping industry by 2030. The full-chain solution including CO2 handling developed and assessed within AMbCS project aid to significant emission reductions by 2030 and advancing to further reductions by 2050. AMbCS brings in 7 partners from 3 countries ranging from technology developers, engineering and end users to enable new CCUS market development.
