Demonstrating Innovative, Reliable, Efficient and Low-Cost Tidal power on the multi-MW scale at a Fully Consented site in Hammerfest, Norway

Awarded: NOK 74,999

Project Manager:

Project Number:

349458

Project Period:

2023 - 2024

Location:

Tidal Sails's BeamReach is a revolutionary design and is the first and only technology based on fully recyclable extruded aluminum sail profiles to extract energy from tidal streams, ocean, and slow-moving river currents. The hardware comprises sails attached to two rope loops moving between two turning stations moored on opposite shorelines. The sails autonomously seek optimal pitch, and in strong currents with concurrent high sideways loads, excess power is bled off to not compromise the ropeway structural integrity. The fundamental advantage of sail-based tidal energy converters lies in exposing much larger surface areas in the stream per connection point, reducing cost, and efficiently exploiting moderate flow rates by producing rated power where turbines typically only generate a fraction (10%). Tidal Sails plans to build a 2MW plant as a demonstrator, validate BeamReach technology, and establish certification criteria for commercialization. When tested and evaluated the demonstrator, to scale up to 3 plants with a total of 6MW and to commercialize the technology. The final goal is to build ten 2MW plants in order to provide 20MW at Kvalsund site. Tidal Sails will seek additional funding for this project that also need approval from the authority.
