FLOCEAN: Affordable, lowest carbon footprint, and ocean-friendly reverse osmosis desalination system.

Population growth and climate change increase the demand for freshwater, resulting in water stress affecting 2 billion people globally. To tackle this problem, FSUBSEA is developing an innovative subsea desalination system, FLOCEAN, that is cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly. Unlike traditional sea water reverse osmosis systems, FLOCEAN operates at depths of ~500 meters, utilizing natural deep-water pressure to perform reverse osmosis desalination, producing freshwater from seawater. The approach offers exceptional advantages with 50% energy reduction, decrease in levelized cost of water (LCOW) by up to 50%, chemical free and low saline discharge, and a 95% reduction in land use. Therefore, FLOCEAN allows for cost-efficient seawater desalination while preserving marine life. The main barriers for FSUBSEA going forward are related to testing and demonstrating FLOCEAN technology in the real operational environment to bring the system up to TRL 8. Demonstration of the desalination system on-site requires large amounts of investments and our investors find it too risky to commit at this stage. The EIC project will enable FSubsea to 1) finalize the development of FLOCEAN, 2) demonstrate the technology in real operational environment and therefore derisk the technology; and 3) perform business development activities for full-scale commercialization. The EIC Accelerator will provide a unique opportunity for FSUBSEA to accelerate our technology development and product maturation roadmap by testing and validating the technology in real operational environment - driving FSUBSEA to full scalability and commercial readiness. The EIC project is expected to have a long lasting environmental and societal impact.
