Optimization of Free Space Optical Communication Link based Drones for Search and Rescue Operations in the Arctic Region

The Arctic region is witnessing more frequent shipping accidents than ever which require accurate search and rescue operations. The existing communication systems use drones with radio frequency (RF) technology, which has limited bandwidth and cannot offer 4G/5G connectivity due to harsh weather constraints. It further limits the capacity of drones and affects the resolution of images and videos. The current research proposes to design free space optical communication (FSOC) link-based drones that can enhance connectivity between multiple drones and rescue ships as well as the capacity of drones to produce high resolution images and videos. The proposed FSOC-based drones can provide highspeed connectivity than the existing RF technology. The research will collect atmospheric turbulences data from the Arctic region and use it for designing the FSOC link. Furthermore, to enhance the capacity of FSOC-based drones, the research will design advanced multiplexing schemes (Mode Division Multiplexing and Orthogonal Code Division Multiple Access) and to ensure link stability, omnidirectional receiver will be designed. The research will further evaluate the performance of proposed FSOC link under the impact of various atmospheric turbulences. The expected outcomes of this research will lead to the optimisation of FSOC-based drones in expanding search areas and improving communication systems for SAR operations in the Arctic region.

Sjøisen i Arktis har minket drastisk de siste tiårene, og Polhavet forventes å være isfritt om sommeren mot slutten av århundret. Denne nedgangen har utsatt store havområder for vind, noe som har resultert i at det oftere dannes store bølger i Polhavet. Disse bølgene kan forplante seg over flere titalls til hundrevis av kilometer i sjøisen, knekke den og akselerere smeltingen. Disse fysiske prosessene – bølger som knekker sjøis og effekten dette har på sjøissmelting og vekst – mangler i modellene vi bruker for å forutsi klimautviklingen. Dette bidrar til store usikkerheter i klimamodeller. Effekten av bølger på sjøisen er heller ikke tatt med i prognoser for havets og sjøisens forhold, som brukes av skip som opererer i islagte farvann. I ForWArd ønsker vi å vurdere bølgenes innvirkning på sjøisens utvikling i det stadig røffere Polhavet. I dette arbeidet brukes en svært avansert modell som inkluderer sjøis, hav, bølger og deres interaksjoner. Vi skal først vurdere hvor godt den representerer forholdene i Polhavet sammenlignet med de få tilgjengelige observasjonene. Vi vil så bruke modellen til å undersøke hvordan bølgehøyden og arealet av ødelagt sjøis har utviklet seg de siste tre tiårene. Deretter vil vi kombinere modellen vår med forholdene i det fremtidige Polhavet gitt av klimafremskrivninger, for å undersøke hvordan betydningen av interaksjoner mellom bølger og is vil utvikle seg ettersom sjøis avtar i det 21. århundre. Vår modells estimering av "bølgepåvirkningen" vil tillate polarvitenskapsmiljøet å vurdere hvor usikre deres klimaspådommer uten bølger er. Til syvende og sist vil våre modellresultater og utviklinger legge grunnlaget for å legge til bølgeeffekter i hav- og sjøisvarsler i Arktis. Dette vil gjøre varslene mer nøyaktige og bidra til sikkerheten for menneskelig aktivitet i denne regionen.

Arctic sea ice decline under climate change has allowed waves to form and grow more easily in the Arctic Ocean. These waves propagate into the sea ice over tens to hundreds of kilometres, fragmenting it into small floes. This area of broken ice, known as the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), is a highly complex region where many interactions occur between the ocean, sea ice, and atmosphere. The action of waves strongly affects these interactions, with rapid feedbacks on the sea ice. However, climate models do not account for these wave-ice interaction processes, which likely contributes to the strong biases in their estimation of modelled sea ice extent and volume and their inability to capture short-term sea ice extent variability. Given the lack of observations available, numerical models remain the best way to estimate how wave-ice interaction processes can impact Arctic sea ice, but most wave-ice coupled models are still prototypes. In ForWArd, we will use one of the most advanced of these models to assess this impact in the context of climate change. To this aim, we will use the latest observations to calibrate the modelled wave-affected area and produce a 30-year-long hindcast of the MIZ extent evolution to analyse how it responded to larger wave height, delayed refreezing, and thinner ice. Then, we will assess the relative importance of the wave-ice interactions suspected to affect sea ice in the MIZ using well-documented events. Finally, we will estimate how waves will contribute to sea ice extent and volume variability in the coming decades, as large areas of open water will remain open until late in the autumn. The flexibility of our setup will allow us to test the sensitivity of our results to model resolution and assumptions, giving invaluable insights into the biases induced by misrepresenting wave-ice interactions. ForWArd will also pave the way for the integration of wave effects in sea ice forecasts, a requirement for safer operations in ice-infested waters.

Sustainable cultivation of polychaetes as feed in aquaculture

Fangst- og håndteringstress påvirker fiskens kjøttkvalitet eller overlevelsesevne dersom den blir sluppet fri. I WelTuna er målet vårt å minimere disse stressorene i for å forbedre velferd, bærekraft og produktkvalitet av makrellstørje i det norske stangfisket.
Kystnært stangfiske etter makrellstørje fra mindre fartøy har økt raskt i omfang for rekreasjon-, kommersielle- og vitenskapelige formål. Stangfiske har betydelig potensiale som velferdsvennlig fangstmetode, da metoden i motsetning til andre påvirker fisken i relativt kort tid og hver fisk blir håndtert individuelt.
Prosjektteamet vårt bestående av forskere, fiskere, fiskeriforvaltning, fiskekjøpere, foredlingsindustri, dyrevelferdsgrupper og andre interesseorganisasjoner fra hele verden, vil bruke de nyeste metodene og teknologien til å overvåke velferdstilstand under fangst, håndtering og slakting og relatere dette til kvalitet på individnivå. Denne kunnskapen vil så danne grunnlaget for utvikling av fangst- og håndteringsmetoder som minimerer stress og opprettholder høy kjøttkvalitet forebygger utilsiktet slipping av makrellstørje samt reduksjon i bifangst. Vi vil også gjennomføre studier av struktur og aktivitet i hjerne hos makrellstørje for å utvikle humane bedøvelsesmetoder som reduserer stress under håndtering og slakting.
Tilslutt vil vi, i samarbeid med internasjonale eksperter innen makrellstørje biologi og kvalitet, utarbeide beste-praksis-retningslinjer for fangst, håndtering, slakting, lagring og kvalitetskontroll. Vi håper at vårt fokus på bærekraft, god velferd og høy kvalitet vil fungere som en inspirasjon for utviklingen av ansvarlige fangstmetoder med fokus på fiskevelferd både nasjonalt og internasjonalt.

This project will improve animal welfare in wild-capture rod-and-line (R&L) fisheries for Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABT; Thunnus thynnus). By improving welfare, the project intends to minimise the environmental impacts of fishing through improvements to sustainability and product quality.

Since the re-establishment of the Norwegian ABT quota, the traditional capture method (purse seine) has not been efficient or profitable. As purse seiners target aggregations of fish, animal welfare  and product quality are easily compromised. In 2022, only 48% of the 315-tonne purse seine quota was caught.

A rod-and-line (R&L) fishery using coastal powerboats has also developed. In 2022, ~100 ABT were caught by R&L for recreational, commercial and scientific purposes. R&L capture overcomes many of the issues associated with purse seine fishing. Catching fish one-by-one gives the opportunity to maintain welfare and quality at the individual level. Norwegian R&L fishing for ABT is therefore well placed to transition towards an animal welfare conscious and environmentally sustainable fish capture method. However, knowledge gaps exist that hinder this transition:

1.	Lack of knowledge of the animal welfare impacts of capture and slaughter;
2.	Sub-optimal handling practices and limited processing infrastructure
3.	Limited understanding of ABT behaviour and distribution
4.	Bycatch and escape rates are unknown

The project is organised into four scientific work-packages (“Capture”, “Stunning”, “Welfare” and “Quality”) and a management WP to coordinate activities and communication. Fundamental to the project design is that every fish caught will be used by each scientific WP, with each using specific methodologies to address their respective objectives. The project will also benefit from the input of various stakeholders, including fishers, fishery managers, fish buyers, fish processors, animal welfare agencies and NGOs.

Welfare conscious capture and slaughter of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus L.) in the Norwegian rod and line fishery.

GeoPON-prosjektet tar sikte på å utvikle en 100 % sirkulær pongtong, fri for EPS, ved bruk av en skreddersydd geopolymer betong, og å dokumentere virkningene på ytelse og bærekraft. I tillegg, og for å redusere den totale tettheten til pongtongen, vil prosjektet også se på å erstatte de naturlige tilslagene i betongskallet med et sirkulært lett tilslag med lavt eller nøytralt karbonavtrykk, laget av avgang fra gruveindustrien og resirkulerte materialer fra industrien, . Som sådan vil innovasjonen føre til design av et nytt produkt, 100 % sirkulært og med lavere karbonavtrykk enn tradisjonell betong. For å passe til pongtong-spesifikasjonene, må produksjonsprosessen av det geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet og tilslagene optimaliseres og tilpasses.: Det  geopolymer baserte bindemiddelet er et semikrystallinsk amorft materiale, som dannes gjennom polymerisasjonsreaksjonen mellom en aluminosilikat kilde og en alkalisk reagens. Det er et sementfritt bindemiddel, med ultralavt karbonavtrykk, som også tillater CO2-binding. Tilslagene som produseres i prosjektet er satt sammen av et bindemiddel, et tilslagsmateriale samt ulike ytelsesbaserte tilsetningsstoffer, granulert og sintret ved høy temperatur, en prosess som gjør det mulig å skreddersy tilslagsegenskapene til brukerens behov, og for å kunne utnytte den produserte geopolymer baserte betongen som råmateriale ved produksjon av tilsvarende tilslag på slutten av levetiden. For å muliggjøre integrering av den sirkulære geopolymerbetongen som er utviklet i prosjektet til pongtongen, vil det etableres en helhetlig optimaliseringstilnærming i prosjektet, for å definere den beste utformingen av flytende strukturer basert på vurderingene av sirkulære betonger og kravet til de strukturelle ytelsene. Tilnærmingen vil inkludere design, bruk av fluidstrukturinteraksjonsmodellering, produksjon av pongtongen, produksjon av geopolymer og aggregater, og vurdering av miljømessige/økonomiske hensyn.

The main objective of the project is the development of 100% circular pontoon free of EPS using tailored geopolymer concretes and demonstrate the impacts on performance and sustainability. In addition, and for decreasing the overall density of the pontoon, the project will also look at substituting the natural aggregates in concrete shell by high performance recycled particles obtained from industrial wastes. As such, the innovation will lead to the design of a new product, 100% circular, manufactured and commercialised by Helmar. The production process of the foamed geopolymer concrete and the aggregates must also be optimised and tailored to fit for the pontoon specifications, leading to a new production process for Rockpore, and new waste recycle chain for Rana Gruber.
Helmar anticipates that the use of EPS might be prohibited in the future due to new regulations and is looking for alternatives.  The Rockpore solution appears very appealing as a substitute for EPS: The Rockpore concept is a type of low-density geopolymer-concrete, 100% circular, using recycled Light Weight Aggregates and cement free binders. The properties of the TBG can be modified to fit end user needs, which enables market penetration in markets outside the construction sector. The present project aims at utilising and adapting the Rockpore TBG together with a unique cement free, ultra-low carbon footprint binder as a substitute to traditional EPS block in the pontoons. In addition, a new aggregate type will be developed, as a substitute to the natural aggregates used in the shell concrete. To enable the integration of the circular geopolymer concrete developed in the project to the pontoon, a holistic optimization method will be established to define the best design of floating structure based on the assessments of circular concretes and the requirement on the structural performances, and will include design, manufacturing and assessment of environmental/economic considerations.

Development of a fully circular pontoon design by substituting EPS with a foamed carbon sequestrated geopolymer-concrete

Maritim- og offshoreindustrien har etterlyst en mer strukturert metode, som utnytter dagens teknologiske potensial, for å registrere og få tilgang til informasjon om fartøyets skrogtilstand. Utviklingen av en digital tvilling for vurdering av fartøyets skrogtilstand er et svar på dette som har flere fordeler.

Tidligere forskningsresultater har vist at droner tillater trygge,  automatiserte og fleksible fjerninspeksjoner. For å gi droneinspeksjoner en ekstra fordel, bør teknologi for å utføre droneinspeksjon mens fartøyet seiler, og muligheten til å automatisk gjøre tykkelsesmålinger, utvikles. Registrering av inspeksjonsdata fra droner til en digital tvilling er et naturlig neste steg. Gitt tilstrekkelig kvalitet på drone-innsamlede data, i tillegg til effektiv registrering av menneskelig innsamlede data, kan både menneskelige og dronebaserte inspeksjoner gi data til en digital tvilling og komplementere hverandre. Dette kan muliggjøre en mer effektiv overvåkning av skrogtilstand og redusere antall ganger mennesker utsettes for farene ved inspeksjon av trange/innestengte rom.

Ved å samle inn relevante skrogdata er det et potensial for å utnytte historisk informasjon fra en mengde fartøyer til å lage en statistisk modell for å forutsi skrogtilstanden. Dette kan tillate estimering av skrogets tilstand basert på operasjonelle forhold et fartøy har vært utsatt for. I kombinasjon med konstruksjonsmodeller kan dette også brukes til å automatisk lage skroginspeksjonsplaner som prioriterer områder med økt risiko for å ha feil.

Prosjektet ledes av DNV, et ledende klassifikasjonsselskap, i samarbeid med rederiene Altera Infrastructure og Klaveness, som er henholdsvis oljetanker- og lasteskipsoperatører i dette prosjektet, ScoutDI, en inspeksjonsdrone-leverandør, og NTNU gjennom Autonomous Robots Lab ved avdeling for kybernetikk.

The project will develop the concept of a digital twin of the hull condition for assessing the structural integrity and compliance of the physical hull. The digital twin is kept up to date with the physical hull over its lifetime by frequently collecting large amounts of data, in non-intrusive ways that do not interrupt business operations. This enables continuous monitoring and compliance assessment. Autonomous drones collect the data instead of humans to improve personnel safety. Automated damage detection and coating breakdown assessment assists the human expert, leading to improved quality of the structural integrity assessment. The project will enable digital twin-based surveys as industrial standard and realize economic and safety benefits as well as reducing environmental footprint due to reduced need for travels. 

The innovation will lead to improved quality and safety of vessel inspection services, in particular: 
1. Hull condition assessment and continuous compliance decision in a 3D digital twin, a multi-data digital representation of the physical hull based on data such as high-precision point clouds, videos, AIS and weather data. The digital twin also holds location-tagged thickness measurements, history of damages and repairs, and data of sister vessels. 
2. High coverage, high-quality, location-tagged data of the hull compartment, collected frequently by autonomous/automated drones with semantic knowledge of the physical structure. Automated data collection ensures standardized data which improves comparison with historical data. Drone-based collection during sailing or between discharge and loading of cargo causes minimal interruption of business operations. 
3. Automated damage detection in point clouds and videos, automated damage probability predictions based on data in the digital twin, and an automatically generated targeted inspection plan for the drones as well when physical inspections are deemed necessary.

Assessment of ship hull Integrity based on a Digital Twin

Trådløs kommunikasjonsrevolusjon i maritim industri

Scandinavian Reach Technologies leder et banebrytende prosjekt for trådløs kommunikasjon i stålkonstruksjoner, som skip. ScanReach fokuserer på å forbedre sitt produkt for trådløs tilkobling om bord (OWC) for å møte de økende kravene fra den maritime industrien, offshore og havvindindustrien, som raskt går over til digitale og IoT-baserte operasjoner for forbedret effektivitet, sikkerhet og motstandsdyktighet.

Innovativ teknologi: Teknologien er designet for å muliggjøre trådløs kommunikasjon i stål-dominerte miljøer, en kjent utfordring i den maritime sektoren. Denne teknologien baserer seg på lavenergi-radio meshnettverksnoder som muilggjør trådløs datatransport gjennom skip, og baner vei for diverse IoT-applikasjoner som sporing av personell og eiendeler, og integrering av miljøsensorer. Med en industri som beveger seg mot digitale tvillinger, maskinlæring og overvåking av energiforbruk i sanntid, utvikler selskapet neste generasjon av avanserte kommunikasjonsnoder. Disse nodene er ment å håndtere større mengder trådløse data, noe som gjør dem passende for de høyteknologiske kravene til moderne skipsfart.

This project strives to advance wireless communication in large steel structures, such as ships, improving our existing Onboard Wireless Connectivity (OWC) product. This enhancement will bolster Scandinavian Reach Technologies AS market presence and relevance in the competitive shipping industry. The primary need for this innovation arises from the maritime, offshore, and sea wind industries. These industries are transitioning towards digital and IoT-based operational models for efficiency, safety, and resilience. 

Scandinavian Reach Technologies is at the forefront of addressing this need. Its revolutionary technology enables efficient wireless communication within confined steel environments. It eliminates the need for costly and complex cabling based on an innovative, low-power radio mesh networking node that allows wireless data transport to the gateway/edge computer throughout the mesh network. This technology paves the way for various IoT applications, such as tracking personnel and assets, collecting environmental sensor readings, and integrating other third-party sensors.
 
While the company's current mesh nodes are designed for simple sensor data and limited data volumes, the emerging ambitions for Digital Twins, Machine Learning models, and Real-time Energy Consumption monitoring in the industry have created a demand for high-volume wireless data transport to an internet endpoint. To meet this demand, Scandinavian Reach Technologies AS is dedicated to developing next-generation communication nodes capable of handling large amounts of wireless data in complex steel environments to replace signal cabling entirely.

SteelWave High Volume Wireless Communication Platform for Steel Environments (HWC-SE)

Global oppvarming fører til store endringer i Antarktis; isbreene, is bremmene og havisen smelter; det påvirker havstrømmer og dynamikk i Sørishavet som igjen påvirker de marine økosystemene og deres evne til å absorbere den økte atmosfærisk CO2 som er et resultat av menneskelig aktivitet. Sørishavet er har rike økosystemer hvor planteplankton og isalger effektivt lagrer CO2 gjennom fotosyntese. De nåværende og fremtidige endringene i den fysiske dynamikken i Sørishavet vil spille en stor rolle for fremtiden til marine økosystemer her og dermed evnen til å absorbere CO2.

Dette prosjektet har som mål å etablere et observatorium for biologisk mangfold og økosystemendring for det østlige Weddellhavet / Kong Haakon VII-havet. I denne regionen har det vært begrensede effekter av klimaendringer, men det er nå økende bevis økte miljøforvandling med betydelig innvirkning på biologisk mangfold og funksjonen til økosystemene. Det er begrenset data om økosystemet i dette området. Ved å etablere systematisk overvåkning av økosystemet, vil dagens status for økosystemet og det biologiste mangfoldet sammenlignes med antatte framtidige endringer. Dette vil bidra til å oppnå internasjonale mål for bevaring av marint biologisk mangfold og demping av klimaendringer.

This Biodiversa+ project aims to lay the foundation of a transnational Weddell Sea Observatory of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Change (WOBEC) for the Eastern Weddell Sea / King Haakon VII Sea (EWS) in the Southern Ocean. The Weddell Sea plays a key role for global ecosystem services, such as climate regulation and food provision, and hosts many species with conservation status. Acknowledging this unique ecological value, the EU and other members of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) are working towards a Marine Protected Area in the Weddell Sea (WSMPA). In the EWS, there is increasing evidence of a transition from a period of relatively muted climate change into an era of environmental transformation with significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Until present, however, the ecosystem of the EWS has remained notoriously under-studied. By laying the foundations of systematic ecosystem monitoring in the EWS, WOBEC will provide a baseline of the present state of biodiversity and ecosystems against which change can be measured and contribute to a number of transnational goals in marine biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and the post-global biodiversity framework.

BioBoost+-prosjektet vil fremme kostnadseffektiv høyfrekvent prøvetaking og identifikasjon av marine planter og dyr ved å bruke Artificial Intelligence (AI)-teknologi på fotografier og video. Disse metodene vil bli brukt på habitater (sjøgressenger, skalldyrsenger og makroalgekroner), indikatorarter av økologisk og økonomisk betydning (f.eks. fisk, hummer, strandfugl), invasive arter og plankton (grunnlaget for næringsnettet). Ved Nord universitet vil fokus være på automatisering av analyser av dyreplanktonprøver samlet inn årlig i over 40 år, og nyere etablert overvåking av havbunnsfauna og fisk på livestream undersjøisk video i Saltfjord.

Disse dataene er nødvendige for å gi rettidig informasjon om helsen til økosystemene og endringer i biologisk mangfold i sammenheng med fiskeri, klimaendringer og invasive arter. Dette prosjektet i europeisk målestokk involverer åtte organisasjoner og har studiesteder i Middelhavet, Nord- og Norskehavet, inkludert steder med aktiv habitatrestaurering og marine verneområder. De forbedrede metodene vil akselerere tilgjengeligheten av informasjonen for forskere, myndigheter og innbyggere.

BioBoost+ is designed to improve non-invasive, cost-effective, and high-frequency sampling and identification of marine plants and animals by applying state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology with digital imagery including real-time monitoring via camera networks and involvement of citizen science groups. These methods are applied to a wide range of taxa, from habitat-forming species (seagrass meadows, shellfish beds, and macroalgal canopies), indicator species of ecological and economic importance (e.g., coastal fish, lobsters, shorebirds), invasive species, and understudied groups (from microscopic, free-floating animals to rare fish). BioBoost+ enhances biodiversity monitoring within European regional seas from the Mediterranean, North and Norwegian Seas to support ongoing conservation interventions such as active habitat restoration projects and Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Improved biodiversity monitoring will allow a better understanding of large-scale phenomena, such as thresholds, regime shifts and species invasions in vulnerable ecosystems, improve the capacity to predict the impacts of multiple stressors, and to develop better indicators of marine ecosystem health.

Boosting the Frequency and Scale of Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Using Digital Imagery and Artificial Intelligence

Akvakultur er for tiden den raskest voksende matproduksjonssektoren globalt, men på grunn av utilstrekkelig avfallshåndtering i produksjonssystemene, har den en betydelig miljøpåvirkning. For å sikre at industrien kan vokse på en bærekraftig måte, er det avgjørende å dempe disse miljøeffektene, samtidig som det skapes en sirkulær økonomi.

SEA-CYCLE-prosjektet har som mål å utnytte avfall og avløpsvann fra havbruksnæringen ved å innføre sirkulærøkonomiske prinsipper i håndteringen av havbruksavfall som en del av produksjonsprosessen.

Hovedmålet med SEA-CYCLE er å utvikle kunnskap som vil bidra til flere bærekraftige tilnærminger i produksjonsprosesser og samtidig minimere forurensning i havmiljøet. Prosjektet foreslår teknologier for å bidra til de sirkulære tilnærmingene i akvakultursektoren, samtidig som miljøforurensningen reduseres via bærekraftig avløpsvannbehandling og ressursgjenvinningsteknikker. I tillegg vil SEA-CYCLE evaluere den økonomiske levedyktigheten til disse teknologiene fra et samfunnsmessig ståsted, med tanke på både miljøkostnadene og fordelene involvert.

Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing food production sector globally, but it also has the potential to leave a significant environmental impact due to inadequate waste management practices within its production systems. To ensure a sustainable expansion of this industry, it is crucial to make efforts to minimize or mitigate these environmental effects, while creating circular economy. The SEA-CYCLE project aims to utilize waste and wastewater from the aquaculture industry by implementing circular economy principles in the management of aquaculture waste as part of the production processes.

The project proposes creating value chain for aquaculture waste resulting from aquaculture production. The project will i) investigate the valorization options of aquaculture sludge through anaerobic digestion and pyrolysis, ii) assess the ability of biochar produced from aquaculture sludge for N and P recovery and heavy metal removal from aquaculture wastewater, iii) assess the potential of aquaculture wastewater enriched biochar as biobased fertilizer. The environmental and economic impacts of the proposed technologies in the project will be assessed by life cycle analysis (LCA) and social cost-benefit analysis. 

In this project, we have assembled a strong interdisciplinary team of scientists with complementary expertise in the valorization of aquaculture waste including anaerobic digestion, production and utilization of biochar for environmental applications, LCA and cost-benefit analysis. The project primarily supports the achievement of the SDG 6, SDG 7, SDG 12, SDG 13 and SDG 14 by proposing technologies to contribute to the circular approaches in the aquaculture sector while reducing the environmental pollution via sustainable wastewater treatment and resource recovery techniques.

EnergiSim: A Cutting-edge Simulation Tool for Design, and Operation Optimization of Ground Source Heat Pump Systems (GSHP)

The SVALGREEN project focus on optimizing the collaboration and thus use of the existing research infrastructures across the largest climatic gradient in the Arctic, between warm Svalbard and cold Greenland, as organised in the long-term SIOS (Svalbard Integrated Earth Observing System) and GIOS (Greenland Integrated Observing System) projects. Large investments have been made nationally in Svalbard and Greenland respectively over the last decade in these two projects, and the access to both research infrastructure, observations and data are highly improved through both of these projects. So far there has never been any coordinated regional research approach extending across the entire gradient from the terrestrial parts of Eastern and northern Greenland across the Fram Strait to Svalbard. We very much aim for this to happen as a direct outcome of the applied for workshop. However, now in 2022 a full regional scale dedicated approach to make interdisciplinary use of the entire gradient is, unfortunately, still completely missing. Studies across this gradient is of global importance for increasing the understanding of Earth System Science in all its spheres and can address both the present ongoing climatic changes and their effects on both the bio- and geospheres, to the longer-term geological development, as the basis for developing this unique gradient region. By establishing a joint regional large-scale research initiative providing access to the entire gradient, process understanding can be raised to pan-Arctic scale and thus place Svalbard research very clearly in a global perspective.  The workshop will enhance and promote national and international cooperation by inviting representatives from all relevant institutions working in Greenland and Svalbard on Earth System Science and the political level in the region.

Using SVALGREEN for research and higher education - interdisciplinary cooperation in a Pan-Arctic perspective combining SIOS and GIOS

Prosjektet startede med en kick-off workshop på UNIS på Svalbard med 10 deltakere fra alle prosjekt partnere 22-23 oktober 2018. Vi gjennomførte også en feltekskursjon som del av denne workshop. Igjennom hele prosjektperiode har vi hatt regelmessige online Steering Committee møter med alle partnere for at diskutere fremdriften i de planlagte aktiviteter i prosjektet. Prosjektet avsluttedes med en exit strategi workshop som foregikk som del av ArcticNet møtet i Toronto i December 2022. Der besluttede vi at dele vores erfaringer med prosjektet ved at lave en publikasjon om behovet for risiko analyser av climate change og permafrost i nordlige samfunn. Vi diskuterte også muligheten for at videre utvikle internships i permafrost.
En meget viktig del av samarbeidet i prosjektet har vært den felles utvikling av to nye master kurs, som ble gjennomført hhv to og en gange i prosjektperioden ved hhv. NTNU og UNIS. Masterkurset 'Design of Roads and Railways in Cold Climate' 7.5 ECTS ble designet, kursplan lagt og to online moduler ble også designet og produsert, som del av kurset. Kurset ble avholdt ved NTNU, Norge i høsten 2019 (25 studenter, 6 fra Canada og 10 norske), og igjen i høsten 2022 (12 studenter). Vi ansatte en ung canadisk forsker, Julie Malenfant-Lepage, som kursansvarlig begge ganger det blev kjørt. Hun har også koordinert utviklingen av kurset. Også masterkurset 'Geohazards and geotechnics in high Arctic permafrost environments'  (10 ECTS) ble lavet designet og planert i løpet av 2019. Og vi søkte om at få det som et UNIS kurs, slik at det var klar til at kjøres i juni i 2020. Kurset er formelt godkjent som del av UNIS kursportefølje. Vi ansatte med den unge forsker Graham Gilbert (opprinnelig fra Canada, og har studert master og PhD ved UNIS, UiO og UiB Norge) som også var med at utvikle kurset som kursansvarlig. Dette feltbaserte kurs ble dessverre avlyst pga. COVID-19 i 2020 og igjen i 2021, men hadde i 2020 36 kvalifiserte studenter, hvorav 6 fra Canada og 15 fra Norge. Pga C-19 nedlukningen var det først i 2022 igjen mulig at gjennomføre dette kurs ved UNIS, hvor det ble kjørt med kjørte helt fylt med 16 studenter ved Universitetssenteret på Svalbard, UNIS over 5 uker. Endelig som en del av prosjektet gjennomførte vi ved Yukon University, Whitehorse, Canada masterkurset ‘Advanced Permafrost Engineering Applied to Transportation Infrastructure’ i sensommeren med 5 studenter. Kurset ble undervist av Chris Burn and Guy Dore fra  hhv. Carleton og Laval universitetene. Dette kurs bygger på et tidligere kurs men omdesignet til at ha en lengere feltdel. Der var en norsk deltaker på dette.

Da prosjektet måtte avsluttes i 2022, og vi ikke hadde hatt noen bachelor relevant aktivitet, besluttede vi at involvere os i permafrost bachelor kurset ved UNIS i 2022, AG-218 ‘International Bachelor Permafrost Summer Field School’. Dette kjørte over 5 uker i tidlig sommer 2022, og vi har støttet yngre forsker Marjolaine Verret, som kursansvarlig for dette interdisiplinære kurs. Det kjørte fylt med 20 studenter, hvorav 3 var fra Canada.

Vi utviklede en session til ArcticNet konferensen i desember 2020 i Canada: 'Integrating science and engineering education to address challenges with northern infrastructure under a changing climate with special focus on permafrost'. ArcticNet sessjonen ble gjennomført i full digital versjon med noen utvalgte munntlige presentasjoner.

Pga COVID-19, som ikke gjorde det mulig at gjennomføre utveksling mellom Canada, Norge og Svalbard, ble prosjektet satt i bero fra våren 2020 til ut på høsten 2021, hvoretter vi måtte lave en revidert prosjektplan. 

Pga de manglende fysiske aktiviteter har vi fokusert på at utvikle online permafrost utdannings resurser. Chris Burn, Carleton University, har utviklet 3 overordnede utdannings video moduler. Et om jordens termale regime, et om jord is og et om anvendelse og implikasjoner. Hver modul inneholder mange summary korte videoer, men også flere længere videoer.  Vi har også lavet to video moduler om remote sensing av permafrost utviklet i samarbeide med den unge forsker Line Rouyet, NORCE; et video modul om kryostratigrafi laveet av den unge forsker Marjolaine Verret, UNIS, og et video modul om hvordan permafrost boring gjennomføres, lavet av det Longyearbyen based lokale forskningssupport firma Kolibri Geoservices. Alle disse videoer vil være meget viktige dele av ettermælet av prosjektet, og vil være tilgjengelige nettbaserte ressurser for permafrost utdanning. De vil blive tilgjengelige gjennom UNIS utdannings ressurser webside. Vi planlegger også at kunne tilbyde disse gjennom International Permafrost Association's Education and Outreach committee og UArctic Thematic Network for Permafrost.

The FROZEN CANOES project will contribute to high quality research-based educational collaboration between Norway and Canada, in particular between the strong geoscience groups at UNIS, Carleton University, and Yukon College, and between the geotechnical groups at UNIS, NTNU, and Université Laval. The  project partners have and have had project collaboration before within geoscience and geotechnics separately, but the combination of geoscience and geotechnics to be achieved in this application is unique. The project builds on collaboration to develop three new master level courses and four online modules, hopefully so successfully that the course package will continue to be offered as a joint master degree offer/programme at the participating institutions forming a lasting legacy of FROZEN CANOES. Building on several larger research project outcomes, their field and laboratory measuring techniques, and being able to use large-scale geotechnical and geoscientific infrastructures are demonstrating how the educational goals can only be achieved using previous research and research infrastructure. Including early carrier scientists largely into the development of the project and its educational goals ensures transferring research-based educational skills from the senior scientists  to the next generation scientists and engineers. The use of innovative teaching methods using online modules, but also in the planned master courses is depending on being able to use the best outcomes from the qualifying research projects, the technical educational infrastructure of the participating institutions and industry partners. Knowledge of the key science foundation for frost action, permafrost and geohazards is required to adequately address the needs of academic research and industry. Climate change adds uncertainty so sharing expertise between geoscience and engineering research environments, and with industry, will improve our capacity to respond to future cold region issues.

Landscape & infrastucture dynamics of frozen environments undergoing climate change in Canada, Norway and Svalbard

It is unique and important to be able to study the entire breath of the largest climatic gradient in the Arctic from cold Northern Greenland to warm Svalbard. So far, this has not been possible due mainly to logistical challenges and the remoteness of the northern Greenlandic area. With the newly established Villum Research Station at St. Nord (81N) it has become possible to start planning the scientific and logistical use of this gradient. 
To initiate the scientific use, both for research and education, of this largest climatic Arctic gradient ending in Svalbard, we apply for arranging a scientific international workshop in late spring 2017 with participation from the workshop partners, and also to announce it openly so that any other interested scientists can attend at his/her own cost. The overarching aim of the workshop will be to develop specifically research and education collaboration with bio- and geosciences across this gradient, in which upcoming international project proposals may be established by the workshop partners. In particular, potential use of the new Villum Research Station at St. Nord will be discussed, as the connection to this station is from Svalbard only 2-hour small plane flying time and the normal access for scientists is from Svalbard.

Developing research and education collaboration across the largest climatic gradient in the Arctic between Svalbard and Northern Greenland

I perioden 2018-2020 IPA Executive Director Sarah Strand og IPA President Hanne H. Christiansen ledet IPA Executive Committee, produserte de årlige nyhetsbreve, håndterte al kommunikasjon for IPA samt ledede IPA's Council. Både IPA Executive Director og IPA President deltog i First International Southern Hemisphere Conference on Permafrost in desember 2019 i New Zealand, IPAs regionale konferanse i 2019. Den planlagte 12th International Conference on Permafrost (ICOP) skulle ha funnet sted i juni 2020 i Lanzhou i Kina. Den ble avlyst og utsatt til 2022 pga COVID-19. Men IPA Secretariatet gjennomførte the tilhørende IPA Council møte digitalt og dermed fik IPA ny President Dr. Chris Burn fra Canada i slutningen av juni 2020. IPA Secretariatet gjennomførte overdragelse til nytt sekretariat i Canada over sommeren og tidlig høst 2020.

In this project we apply for support to allow Norway to coordinate the International Permafrost Association, IPA during the period 2016-2020 when Norway will have the Presidency of this association for the first time ever. The mission of the International Permafrost Association (www.permafrost.org) is to promote research in permafrost and permafrost-related fields within the global scientific and engineering communities, to support the activities of researchers in these disciplines, and to disseminate findings concerning permafrost to the decision-makers, the general public and educators. Thus operating the International Secretariat of the IPA is a contribution to international research cooperation and outreach primarily within cryospheric and engineering sciences, but also with links to biogeochemistry and social sciences.
We apply for funding to support on a part-time basis the position of the IPA Executive Director who runs the Secretariat. We also plan to provide assistance to the establishment and operation of a Norwegian Permafrost Association (NPA), which will combine the different engineering and science environments working with permafrost in Norway. With the IPA President 2016-2020 Prof. Dr. Hanne H. Christiansen working at the University Centre in Svalbard, UNIS, we hereby apply for support to locate the IPA Secretariat with her at UNIS in the Svalbard Science Park in Longyearbyen, ensuring a good and efficient operation of the IPA during the Norwegian Presidency, which will also be the first female IPA President ever.

International coordination 2016-2020 of the International Permafrost Association at the University Centre in Svalbard

Karbonlagre i arktisk permafrost er sårbare ved klimaendring. Ny forskning har vist at økt mineralisering av karbon i jorden under oksiske forhold (som favoriserer CO2 produksjon) i stedet for under anoksiske forhold (som favoriserer CH4 produksjon), representerer de viktigste forsterkere av klimaendring i arktisk permafrost. Det er imidlertid mindre kjent hvordan geomorfologiske og hydrologiske prosesser kontrollerer den skiftende fordeling av oksiske og anoksiske sedimenter i arktiske lavlandsområder, slik som det er undersøkt i dette prosjektet. Prosjektet har fokusert på studier av de biogeokjemiske forhold for mikroorganismer i både aktivlaget og den øvre del av permafrosten i de typiske landskapsformer i lavlandsområder på Svalbard, som en illustrasjon på de utstrakte arktiske lavlandsområder med permafrost som finnes i Sibir og Nord-Amerika.
I den norske delen av dette JPI prosjektet har to yngre forskere, Brendan O'Neill og Ebbe N. Bak vært tilsatt ved henholdsvis UNIS og HVL. De har jobbet intensivt med hhv. 1) analyse av isinnholdet og istypene i det aktive laget og permafrostens topplag (kryostratigrafiske studier) og 2) inkubasjonsforsøk med kjerner fra det aktive laget og topplaget av permafrosten med måling av mikrobiologiske parametere, begge fra LowPerm studieområdene på Svalbard. På UNIS har PhD student Graham Gilbert også samarbeidet med prosjektet, og han har innsamlet to 20 m lange permafrostkjerner, som er delt med kolleger i LowPerm prosjektet, som slik har fått tilgang til dypere permafrost fra LowPerm studie området. Den norske delen av prosjektet har primært jobbet med karakterisering av isinnhold og fysisk prosessers dynamikk i det aktive laget og topplaget av permafrosten, samt bestemmelse av endringer i de mikrobielle populasjoner og deres funksjonelle potensiale i begge lagene.
Resultatene fra dette arbeid omfatter rekonstruksjon av den Holocene landskapsutvikling i LowPerm Adventdalen studieområde med fokus på deltautvikling ned gjennom dalen og på utviklingen av de forskjellige landskapsformer med permafrost i lavlandet, med varierende is-innhold. En av de viktigste landskapsformer med hensyn til muligheten for utslipp av klimagasser fra permafrosten er iskile polygoner, som har et særlig høyt isinnhold nær topplaget av permafrosten, og som om vinteren kan gi direkte utslipp av klimagasser til atmosfæren gjennom oppsprekking. Vi har derfor studert den geomorfologiske prosessaktivitet til disse landskapsformer nærmere, og laget en analyse av iskile oppsprekking ved bruk av ny teknologi i form av 1D miniakselerasjonsloggere, som har vist seg velegnet til dette formål. Vi har dessuten samlet inn og analysert en rekke kortere aktivlag og topp permafrostkjerner fra iskile polygoner i LowPerm Adventdalen området. Iskile polygonene er bla. dekket av løs avleiringer i noen deler av studieområdet, mens andre er beliggende i våtområder. Toppen av permafrosten og det aktive laget over den er av sen Holocen alder i Adventdalen, og dermed relativt ung og med meget varierende isinnhold. 
Fem korte permafrostkjerner fra Adventdalen ble også samlet inn i april/mai 2016. Disse har vært brukt av til atskillige analyser, inkl. høy-oppløselige XRF, inkubasjoner, kjemiske og mikrobielle analyser (DNA ekstraksjon, qPCR). Kjernene er også brukt til analyser av isinnhold i en engelsk LowPerm PhD students arbeid. Analysene ferdiggjøres først ved avslutningen av PhD studiet. Det meste av det eksperimentelle og analytiske arbeidet er nå avsluttet, men noen langtids-inkubasjoner vil kjøre i 2018 også. Endringer i forbruk/produksjon av CO2 og CH4 i inkubasjonsforsøkene ble kvantifisert ved hjelp av gasskromatografi med en termisk konduktivitetsdetektor for CO2 og en flammeionisasjonsdetektor for CH4. De foreløpige resultatene tyder på at metanproduksjon spiller en vesentlig mindre rolle for arktiske lavlandsområder enn hittil antatt. Dette understøttes av resultatene fra gassprøvene gjort i samarbeid med andre forskere i LowPerm-prosjektet. Emisjon av CO2 synes å være langt viktigere enn emisjon av CH4 fra arktiske lavlandsområder i forhold disse gassenes relevans i forhold til strålingspådriv. Vi kan også se at det skjer et skifte i sammensetningen av det mikrobielle økosystem fra topplaget av permafrost og opp til det aktive laget, som reduserer utslipp av CH4 fra arktiske lavlandsområder. Andre forskere i LowPerm-prosjektet vil bruke sesongmålinger av drivhusgassutslipp fra de ulike landskapsformene som er undersøkt til å oppskalere utslippene til hele lavlandslandskapet fra Kapp Linné til Adventdalen.  
I tillegg har vi analysert stabile vannisotoper i elvene i studieområdet. Den sesongmessige dynamikken i isotopsammensetningen viser systematiske forskjeller i bidragene fra sideelver i løpet av året. Disse resultatene vil bli satt sammen med hydrokjemiske analyser for å øke forståelsen av næringsstofftransporten i elver som drenerer arktiske lavlandsområder. Disse analysene vil inngå i semi-emp

The importance of the oceans for heat transfer into the Arctic means that the low altitude and very extensive permafrost lowlands here can respond quickly and significantly to climate change. In the Eurasian Arctic this causes the early onset of melt, increased active layer thickness and enhanced microbial activity. It is now known that the vast soil carbon stocks of Arctic permafrost are vulnerable to these changes, but accurate forecasting of its influence on the global climate system cannot be achieved until the following knowledge gaps are
addressed:
1) Microbially-mediated processes at the active layer/permafrost interface will control the in-situ production of new biogases and nutrients in response to warming by (extrinsic) climate forcing. However, at the landscape scale, these crucial biogeochemical processes are governed
by poorly understood intrinsic (hydrological, geomorphological and ecological) drivers yet to be incorporated into regional models.
2) Runoff from extensive permafrost lowlands in the Eurasian Arctic is a quantitatively important source of iron, nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter to already highly productive marine ecosystems. The fertilisation potential of such chemical fluxes entering the sea must be urgently quantified as it will induce further change in the CO2 budget, via biological production, and thus initiate marine ecosystem change.

This project will address these key issues with an integrated programme of field work, laboratory experimentation, numerical modelling and workshops. We will use Russian and Norwegian field logistics from West Spitsbergen to Siberia, and laboratories in the UK and Denmark.
Major polar science practitioners from outside the consortium with expertise in regional modelling, isotope geochemistry, marine ecosystem change and biogeochemical cycling will enhance the international profile and impact of the project via  knowledge exchange activities that
include two workshops.

More than methane: quantifying melt-driven biogas production and nutrient export from Eurasian Arctic lowland permafrost

This project has as the main objective to obtain a data set of permafrost thickness variability which is the main control on the permeability architecture of the sedimentary aquifer in the Adventstalen, Svalbard. To this end we will use hydrogeophysical c haracterisation techniques that have not been used before in the study area of the Adventdalen. These are Electro-Magnetic methods (EM) as well as Nuclear Magnetic Resonance techniques. Vertical soundings using these methodologies along profiles along the  valley bottom as well as across the central river should yield images of the lateral thickness variability of permafrost which is expected to occur at the regional  scale as a result of both recent relative sea-level regression caused by to isostatic upl ift of Svalbard, as well as locally as a result of thermal insulation underneath the river which does not freeze completely to the bed in winter.  The former effect will result in a permafrost cover which is increasingly thicker inland, whilst borehole da ta show the absence of permafrost at the current coastline. As a result of the latter effect we expect to find unfrozen zones (known as taliks) underneath the river, which nearer to the coastline are increasingly more likely to penetrate the entire thickn ess of the permafrost. The outcomes of this study will be used to constrain numerical modelling effort already underway to couple permafrost distributions and hydrogeological phenomena on the one hand. On the other hand, the results from this study will p rovide guidance for the installation of hydrogeological monitoring points in the study area in order to improve our understanding of the hydrogeological response of the Earth System to ongoing climate change.

Hydrogeological characterization of permafrost thickness variability using a variety of geophysical tools in Adventdalen, Svalbard

It is increasingly recognized that permafrost hydrology is an important component in the Arctic system and needs to be better understood in light of climate chanage. At the same time we now know based on IPY research that the warmest continuous permafrost  in the high arctic exist in Svalbard. Comprehensive understanding of sub-permafrost groundwater conditions to considerable depth is also needed to support subsurface CO2 sequestration and nuclear waste storage projects in northern high latitudes.  While  several earth system components that influence and are affected by permafrost hydrology (climate, glaciers, active layer monitoring) are studied extensively in Svalbard, dedicated and systematic hydrological research currently receives little attention. S valbard may well have the potential to become a unique and key node for permafrost hydrological investigation in both Europe and globally, and thereby take a leading role in advancing and integrating this scientific field in Arctic research.

We therefore  will like to organise an SSF supported workshop dedicated to this topic in Svalbard in the early autumn of 2012. The workshop will be held at UNIS in Longyearbyen enabling field visits to the present permafrost and hydrology installations primarily in th e Adventdalen area. As the aim is to merge several research fields: Hydrology, hydrogeology, geocryology and permafrost thermal studies and periglacial geomorphology, we have composed a list of key participants that we have got confirmation will like to c ontribute to the workshop: Co organisers: H. Workshop to develop joint future permafrost hydrology research in Svalbard

This project deals with wind and rugged terrain being influencing factors of snowpack stability on a small slope. If a slope is unstable, it is likely to fail as an slab avalanche, which poses a threat to skiers and mountaineers. The best way to investiga te snowpack stability and its variation on a small slope is to do snowpack studies, by snow pit excavation. To achieve the goal of investigating how wind and rugged topography influence snowpack stability on a small slope, the following tasks need to be c arried out:

- a small suitable slope needs to be found.
- Snow pits need to be excavated and standardized stability tests need to be run in the snow pits.
- these snow pits need to cover the entire slope to receive a good spatial resolution.

In order to  be able to carry out this type of fieldwork, a given infrastructure in terms of field locations, as well as knowledge on the test configuration are of great use. The research group of Karl Birkeland and Jordy Hendrikx, from Montana State University, Depa rtment of Earth Sciences. This group can offer various well investigated field locations as well as the knowledge to carry out my study in the best possible way. So besides carrying out my project, a goal of my visit to Montana is to get to know the avala nche research group, work within the group and learn from their experience. Thus I foresee my research visit to Montana to have 2 main objectives:

1) to carry out my own research project in the best suitable environment. The goal is to publish the outcom e of the study in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
2) to get to know one of the best avalanche research groups worldwide, establish a cooperation and learn from them. this knowledge transfer will be a great opportunity for Norwegian avalanche research.

Snowpack stability variation on small wind effected slopes

One primary research aim is to compare the modern day permafrost conditions in terms of the ground thermal state, the stock of carbon and nitrogen, the potential for greenhouse gas production, the rates of permafrost land formation in the maritime arctic  in Svalbard and Norway with the continental permafrost conditions in Alaska. A second primary research aim is to perform permafrost palaeoenvironmental reconstruction studies comparing conditions across the Arctic Ocean in both Svalbard, Norway and Alaska  within the last interglacial the Holocene based on a combination of modeling the permafrost distribution, field studies of the stratigraphy of different permafrost landforms from boreholes with dates and remote sensing for determination of movement rates  of permafrost landforms such as rock glaciers, ice-wedges, solifluction sheets and rock slides.
The SVALASKA project will establish cooperation between the Geophysical Institute, UAF and the 4 Norwegian partners: The Arctic Geology Department, UNIS; The  Department of Geosciences, UiO, The Geological Survey of Norway, NGU and Northern Research Institute, Norut. 
Collaboration activies include workshops, fieldwork, field excursions to both Norway/Svalbard and Alaska in addtion to staff and student exchange .
