TECO 2030 PEM fuel cell system

Awarded: NOK 74,999

Project Number:

349784

Project Period:

2023 - 2023

Location:

Shipping is a hard to decarbonize industry emitting 3% of global CO2 emissions. Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells show great promise in enabling the industry’s green transition, yet available solutions have not been adopted widely as they are: 1) not inherently safe nor optimized for marine requirements; 2) difficult to obtain approval as they have not been proven safe in operation, and; 3) complex to install, with high Total Cost of Ownership and low ROI. The FCM400 is a breakthrough 400 kW PEM Fuel Cell Module that is inherently safe and delivers the lowest Total Cost of Ownership in the market. We achieve this leveraging patented technology and a novel “engine development” methodology to develop a PEM fuel cell system from the ground up for the maritime market. We have a validated prototype meeting marine safety and performance requirements, regulations and operational experience (at TRL 5), and our 15000 m2 production facility is ready for full scale automated production. The project is going into a new phase where mass production optimization of the module will be the focus in addition to module pilot testing in the field. This will take the product from the current TRL 5 to TRL 8-9. The following innovation activities are planned: WP1: Project management WP2: Development and optimisation of the final FCM400 hardware system to ensure optimal manufacturability and serviceability WP3: Develop software application and algorithms for robust field performance monitoring and predictive maintenance WP4: Management of market launch activities WP5: FCM400 production scale-up and pre-sales
