A novel treatment of glioblastoma

Alternative title: Nanobasert terapi for glioblastoma

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

We will with this project develop a new form for nanotherapy for treatment of brain cancer. Glioblastoma multiforme is one of the most common brain cancers among children and adults, and the deadliest of all cancer forms. There are very few treatment options, and none are curative. Immunotherapies have so far failed, partly due to difficulties in getting the therapies across the blood brain barrier. Out technology consists of small nanoparticles produced from Natural Killer (NK) cells. NK cells are a type of immune cell that specializes in killing cancer cells. They release small nanoparticles that function as torpedoes against the cancer cells. We have equipped these nanoparticles with an address label that will target them towards a specific tumor marker. These modified nanoparticles will be taken inside the cancer cell, which will be killed from within. This approach can be used also for other tumor markers, as we can switch between different address labels to target different cancer forms. We will here test specificity and efficiency of the treatment against cancer cells, identify regulatory issues to develop the treatment further, develop a patenting strategy, and define a commercialization strategy.
