Genredigering er den nye generasjonen av genmodifiseringsteknikker som kan anvendes på mat gjennom produksjon av planter, dyr og mikroorganismer med ønskede agronomiske egenskaper. Nano4CRISPR går fra en «transgen laboratorietilnærming» til en «på stedet tilnærming» hvor komponentene for genredigering vil bli anvendt direkte i åkeren for å modifisere planter, skadedyr og andre organismer. 
Hovedformålet til Nano4CRISPR er å utvikle, teste og risikovurdere en innovativ plattform der nanopartikler og CRISPR-konjugater utvikles for bruk til fremtidig genredigering av produkter. Denne plattformen er unik i sin kombinasjon av nano- og genteknologi og er derfor velegnet til bruk i den banebrytende teknologien som skal benyttes for transport av nanoCRISPR-konjugater og representerer en signifikant fordel over de eksisterende metodene for genteknologi. Målrettet design av nanopartikler vil muliggjøre utviklingen av nanoCRISPR-konjugater som kan trenge gjennom plantecellenes rigide cellevegger og membraner for å oppnå genredigering av hele planter ute i en åker, uten å benytte kompliserte, lange og arbeidskrevende genteknologiske prosesser. Denne tilnærmingen vil også være aktuell innenfor andre felt, slik som akvakultur, skadedyrkontroll og økologiske bevaringsformål.
I tillegg til å utvikle nye nanoCRISPR-konjugater, vil vi også sette søkelys på risikovurdering og undersøke uønsket bruk/misbruk ved hjelp av en RRI (Responsible Research and Innovation) basert tilnærming. Vi vil også se nærmere på mulighetene for industriell produksjon og skalering av nanoCRISPR-konjugater, med den hensikt å forbedre underliggende risikovurderinger samt rammeverket innenfor vurderingen av samfunnsnytte, etikk og miljø som er relevante for genmodifiserte organismer. Interessenter fra akademia, industri, statlige etater og sivile samfunnsorganisasjoner i Norge og andre Europeiske land, vil delta aktivt sammen med oss i en samordnet prosess som vil gi en høy sosial relevans og tillit.

Nano4CRISPR will generate knowledge on nanoparticles based CRISPR delivery products that can be applied externally to crops in the open field for both agricultural and environmental purposes. The project aims to contribute to the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable food production following a Responsible Research and Innovation co-creation platform. NanoCRISPR conjugates have the potential to contribute to reducing the use of harmful chemistries that create persistent agrochemical pollution and to increasing resilience and suitability of our food system. The main goal of Nano4CRISPR is to develop, test and risk assess an integrated platform for the development of personalized nanoCRISPR conjugates for use in future gene-editing products directly in the field or at point of scale.  Rational nanoparticle design will enable the development of nanoCRISPR conjugates that can overcome membranes and rigid cell walls surrounding plant cells and enable gene-editing in whole plants, in the field, without the aid of complicated, long and laborious genetic engineering processes. Hence, the approach is also suitable for other field applications, such as in aquaculture, pest control, and ecological conservation purposes. The integrated gene-editing platform comprehends a holistic risk assessment approach including the investigation of unintended and malicious use. Stakeholders from academia, industry, governmental agencies, and civil society organizations in Norway and other European countries will actively participate with us in a co-creation process that delivers high societal relevance and trust.

Nano4CRISPR: Novel nanocarrier reagents for environmental delivery of CRISPR/Cas

Eldre brønner, også kjent som legacy-brønner, representerer gamle lete- og produksjonsbrønner som går gjennom bergformasjonene i undergrunnen. For å muliggjøre storskala lagring av CO2 og energi, må disse brønnene vurderes nøye og i tillegg konstant overvåkes for å unngå lekkasje fra lagringsreservoarene, som kan befinne seg flere hundre meter til flere kilometer under overflaten. Disse brønnene er normalt forseglet og utilgjengelige, slik at de må evalueres fra overflaten. For å oppnå dette, har vi planer om å utvikle innovative teknologier som tillater oss å vurdere brønnenes tilstand, overvåke dem ved hjelp av ikke-invasive metoder, samt modellere mulige lekkasjerater. Den andre fasen av prosjektet vil fokusere på å foreslå metoder for å minimere potensielle lekkasjer og undersøke hvordan disse brønnene kan utnyttes som en ressurs istedenfor trussel. Dette inkluderer bruk av den eksisterende infrastrukturen for å redusere kostnadene knyttet til overvåking av væskestrømmene i reservoaret og forutsi lekkasjer før de eventuelt inntreffer. Bedre innsikt og overvåking av slike brønner er av avgjørende betydning for den langsiktige sikkerheten til lagringskompleksene og for å oppnå bred aksept i samfunnet for slike prosjekter, som er avgjørende for å bekjempe klimaendringer.

CCS is world-wide considered a key measure to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees. CATF reports that by 2030, available CO2 storage capacity will amount to around half the volume of captured CO2. As more storage space is needed, more complex areas need to be considered. For CCS in historical oil and gas regions, containment of CO2 could be jeopardized
by leakage along legacy well paths. Without storage in those regions, with well-known and extremely well-suited geological features in addition to potentially reusable infrastructure, world-wide storage capacity would be significantly limited.
Primary objective of the LEGACY project is to develop tools and technologies for screening, modelling, monitoring, and mitigation of well integrity issues and leakage, thereby enabling safe and cost efficient, large-scale storage of CO2 in areas with legacy wells.
Scientific aims:
- Communicate effectively with industry, state regulators and general public on legacy wells threats and opportunities,
- Develop an automated workflow for screening of legacy wells,
- Demonstrate tools for cost-efficient non-invasive monitoring of well integrity and leakage,
- Develop and validate strategies for efficient modelling and prediction of leakage rates,
- Develop strategies for mitigation/remediation of well integrity issues, -Explore the possibility of using legacy wells to
improve monitoring of storage sites, 
- Develop recommendations for future well construction and abandonment to facilitate monitoring.

Field studies for de-risking existing wells and CCS site geology

Epoksyresiner er en gruppe kjemikalier med bred bruk i bygg- og beleggapplikasjoner. Selv om de allerede bidrar til bærekraft ved å beskytte og utvide levetiden til blant annet offshoreinstallasjoner, skip, biler, fly og husholdningsapparater, er de nesten utelukkende laget fra fossile ressurser og basert på giftige forbindelser som kan utgjøre en trussel mot miljøet og helse. Mer bærekraftige og tryggere alternativer til konvensjonell epoksy med lignende ytelse som deres originale motparter er derfor etterspurt.
Samarbeidsprosjektet NordiCoats adresserer behovet for en grønn omstilling i kjemikalie- og materialsektoren ved å utvikle mer bærekraftige epoksybindemidler ved en unik kombinasjon av bioteknologi, nanoteknologi og kjemiske syntesemetoder, som fører til nye trygge og bærekraftige biobaserte epoksyforbindelser og resiner med unike egenskaper, mulig resirkulerbarhet, og redusert energiforbruk. De beste nye epoksyresinene vil bli vurdert som bindemidler i høyytelsesbelegg for den maritime sektoren.
NordiCoats implementeres av et konsortium av fire forskningspartnere i aktivt samarbeid med fire industrielle partnere, som med sin komplementære kompetanse og bidrag til prosjektet vil bane vei for nye, mer bærekraftige epoksyprodukter for en mengde ulike bruksområder og markeder.

Epoxy resins represent a highly developed group of chemicals with a broad use in building and coating applications. Although they in high-performance coatings already contribute to sustainability, e.g., by protecting and expanding lifetime of offshore installations, ships, cars, aircraft, and household appliances, etc., they are almost exclusively derived from fossil resources and based on toxic compounds that can pose a threat to the environment and health. More sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional epoxy with similar performances as their original counterparts are therefore in high demand.
The collaborative project NordiCoats addresses the need for a green transition in the chemicals and materials sector by assembling an innovative platform for the development of more sustainable epoxy binders by a highly interdisciplinary approach. Advanced biotechnology methods are applied to produce microbial oils and biopolymers from lignocellulosic sugars, and biorefinery by-products are sourced and upgraded to assemble a set of base compounds for subsequent upgrading. The base compounds are chemically and/or enzymatically activated and combined with advanced nanotechnology, in order to generate new bio-based epoxy compounds and resins with unique properties, possible recyclability, and reduced energy consumption. These new epoxies are then subjected to functional tests, accompanied by safety, environmental, and economic assessments, providing feedback for further material improvement in the project. Ultimately, the best new epoxy resins will be evaluated as binder additives or substitutes in high-performance coatings for the maritime sector. 
NordiCoats is implemented by a consortium of four research partners in active collaboration with four industrial partners, who with their complementary competences and contributions along the entire value chain will pave the way for new, more sustainable epoxy products for a plethora of different applications and markets.

New bio-based epoxy compounds for high performance applications  (NordiCoats)

Verden står overfor komplekse bærekraftsutfordringer som krever umiddelbar oppmerksomhet, og omstilling av matsystemer vil være en av nøkkelløsningene i denne sammenheng. Jord er grunnlaget for matproduksjonen vår, og må derfor tillegges vesentlig vekt i bærekraftige omstillinger av matsystemer. For å oppnå en mer bærekraftig primærproduksjon er det behov for å forvalte jorda på måter som forbedrer helse og produktivitet. Å binde mer karbon i jord ser ut til å være en svært lovende forvaltningspraksis, da dette har vist seg å ha flere fordeler for jordproduktiviteten.
Til tross for at det finnes flere bærekraftige jordforvaltningspraksiser som øker karbon i jordsmonn, er anvendelsen av disse lite utbredt, i Norge så vel som andre steder. En av grunnene er høye kostnader for bøndene i forbindelse med iverksetting av slike nye praksiser. Politiske grep for å overvinne økonomiske barrierer, bl.a. i form av innførte subsidier, tilskudd og skatteinsentiver, har hatt begrenset suksess.
Derfor er det et sterkt behov for en nyskapende måte som kan sikre at bøndene får tilstrekkelig betalt for innsatsen. I KARBONMAT argumenterer vi for at dette kan gjøres gjennom utvikling av bærekraftige forretningsmodeller for karbonbindende jordforvaltningspraksis. I KARBONMAT vil vi gjøre dette ved å samarbeide tett med relevante aktører og ved å involvere et høyst tverrfaglig forskningsteam fra både samfunns- og naturvitenskap. I samproduksjon med relevante aktører vil KARBONMAT utvikle bærekraftige forretningsmodeller for karbonbindende jord i norsk landbruk. Hovedfokus i KARBONMAT-prosjektet er å identifisere måter å utnytte og maksimere dette potensialet, fremme sunn jord, fange klimagassutslipp, forbedre det biologiske mangfoldet og dermed transformere bærekraftpotensialet i primærproduksjonen.

Food system transformation is key to addressing multiple interlocking sustainability challenges, whilst continuing to provide safe food and rural economic opportunities. However, at present, food systems contribute to exacerbating these challenges. There is a crucial need for innovation in the food systems to enable transition towards more sustainable practices. However, one key dimension, which has largely been neglected, is soil. Soil with its multitude of organisms provides ecosystem services and sustains food production systems, which makes it necessary to put soil at the centre of sustainable food system transformations. There is a need for adopting soil management practices that improve the carbon capture, microbial biodiversity and thus productivity of soils for more sustainable primary production. Sequestering more carbon in soils appears to be a highly promising management practice. It has been shown to have multiple benefits on soil productivity.
There are a wide range of soil management practices that can increase carbon in soils. Nevertheless, these have proven to be costly for famers. As a result, adoption of sustainable soil health management practices remains low in Norway and elsewhere. Hence, there is a pressing need for new regulatory frameworks, and innovative business models to ensure that farmers are paid for their effort. In KARBONMAT we argue that this can be done through the development of sustainable business models (SBMs) for carbon sequestering soil management practices that are co-developed with stakeholders. The project applies a highly interdisciplinary approach encompassing both social and natural sciences. In co-production with relevant stakeholders, KARBONMAT designs SBM concepts for carbon sequestering soils in Norwegian agriculture as a novel socio-technical practice that promotes the transition towards more sustainable food systems.

KARBONMAT: Designing sustainable business model (SBM) concepts for carbon sequestration in soils to transform the Norwegian food system

Energiomstilling for å redusere utslipp av klimagasser vil kreve en massiv økning i fornybar energiproduksjon i Norge, samtidig som naturkrisen bør vurderes på lik linje med klimakrisen.  I tillegg, har vi sett at utbygging av fornybar energi har blitt stoppet på grunn av konflikter og uheldige fordelingsvirkninger, noe som viser at økonomisk effektivitet ikke kan skilles fra fordeling og aksept av politikk. Det kreves derfor en mer helhetlig tilnærming for å balansere hensyn til klima, natur og bredere samfunnsinteresser. EnergyWise er et tverrfaglig prosjekt som tar sikte på å sammenstille og vurdere de viktigste konsekvensene for samfunn, økonomi, klima og natur av økt fornybar energiproduksjon i Norge. Prosjektet vil deretter inkludere disse konsekvensene som verdsatte kostnads- og nyttekomponenter, eller ved å holde viktige naturområder utenfor utbygging ("bærekraftsskranker"), i den nasjonale energisystemmodellen TIMES. EnergyWise-prosjektet vil så analysere i TIMES avveininger og fordelingseffekter av scenarier for økt fornybar energiproduksjon og anbefale effektive og akseptable løsninger som kan gi en bedre balanse mellom ulike interesser. Prosjektet har seks arbeidspakker (WP) der WP1 sammenstiller konsekvensene av økt fornybar energiproduksjon, WP2 har som mål å verdsette konsekvensene for natur og samfunn av den økte produksjonen, WP3 gjennomfører analyser av de ulike produksjonsscenariene i TIMES-modellen der de ulike konsekvensene er verdsatt i kroner eller inkludert som skranker, og WP4 analyserer ulike virkemidler og bidrar med anbefalinger. WP5 er rettet mot brukersamarbeid og formidling, mens WP6 er viet prosjektledelse. Forskere fra Statistisk sentralbyrå (SSB), Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE), Norsk institutt for naturforskning (NINA) og Menon skal gjennomføre prosjektet i samarbeid med partnere fra flere statlige institusjoner, inkludert NVE, Miljødirektoratet, Statkraft, privat og frivillige organisasjoner og et vitenskapelig ekspertråd.

The energy transition will require a massive expansion of renewable energy production in Norway. At the same time, the nature crisis needs to be considered on par with the climate crisis. Further, attempts at energy expansion have stalled due to conflict and distributional impacts, demonstrating that economic efficiency cannot be separated from acceptability and equity of policies and outcomes. Hence, a more holistic approach is required to achieve a better balance between climate, nature and wider societal interests. We propose an interdisciplinary project that aims to synthesise and assess the most important impacts on society and economy, climate and nature from renewable energy expansion and integrate these either as monetised welfare effects (costs and benefits) or as sustainability constraints in an integrated national energy system model framework. This framework will be used to analyse trade-offs and distributional effects of expansion scenarios and recommend efficient and acceptable policies that can achieve a better balance between interests. Hence, the proposed project addresses the main topic and challenges of the call and portfolio plan: “The need for comprehensive understanding and knowledge of the issues and trade-offs we face “..” when “Development of new energy production and infrastructure puts pressure on land and biodiversity, while efficient resource management is more important than ever.” Further, we address the two priority areas of the call in an interdisciplinary way, “generating knowledge of power markets, regulations….and distributional effects” and taking head on “controversial topics involving conflicting societal interests”. Researchers from Statistics Norway, Institute for Energy Technology, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research, and Menon will implement the project in cooperation with collaborators from government, e.g. Environment Agency, the Energy Regulator, Statkraft, private and NGO sectors, and a scientific advisory board.

EnergyWise: Integrated modelling of efficient and acceptable expansion of renewable energy in times of nature and climate crises

Vann husker klimaforholdene på sin vei gjennom vannsyklusen, og når vann fryser til snø og is, blir denne informasjonen bevart gjennom tidene. Så enhver snø- og isprøve har en klimahistorie å fortelle, og forskere lærer å knytte det kjemiske signalet i vannet til det tilsvarende klimasignalet. SnowDOGS-prosjektet vil studere hvordan et visst signal som vi finner i snøen, dannes og dermed identifisere hvordan klimaet har vært – omtrent som en hund, som snuser seg frem til begynnelsen av en sti når den følger løypa bakover; som ga oss ideen om å kalle prosjektet SnowDOGS.

I jordas polare områder har snø samlet seg i hundretusener av år, og dermed inneholder iskjerner boret i Grønlandsisen og Antarktis uvurderlig informasjon om jordas klimahistorie. Denne informasjonen er avgjørende for å forstå det komplekse klimasystemet og prosessene som definerer den gjennomsnittlige klimatilstanden, men også svingningene rundt gjennomsnittet. Når vi først har forstått klimasystemet og kan bygge klimamodeller som kan reprodusere klimasignalet vi finner i iskjerner, kan vi ha tillit til klimamodellens spådommer om fremtidig klima. 
For øyeblikket klarer modellene ikke å reprodusere snøsignalet som er koblet til årlige og dekadale klimasvingninger. Derfor kan det hende at modellen ikke simulerer prosessene som danner klimasignalet i snøen – kanskje noe mangler i modellen?
Målet med SnowDOGS er å forbedre eksisterende modeller ved å ta med kjemiske prosesser som skjer i snøen etter at den har falt på bakken. SnowDOGS bygger dermed på ny forskning som har vist at disse prosessene kan være viktige. Den forbedrede modellen vil bli testet ved å sammenligne modellsimuleringer med snødata hentet fra forskjellige steder på Grønland og Antarktis. Vi håper at den forbedrede modellen vil forbedre våre muligheter å snuse frem opprinnelsen til klimasignalet i snøen, også for snøen som har falt for mange hundretusen år siden. Dette vil også forbedre våre muligheter å forutsi framtidig klima.

Ice core water isotope records from the polar areas are invaluable climate proxies providing information about the relationship between the climate mean state and it's variability. The secondary ice core water isotope "excess" parameters, d-excess and 17O-excess, are especially useful for climate reconstruction since they presumably contain climatic information from the precipitation source regions. However, when simulating excess records with state-of-the-art isotope-enabled climate models, simulated and observed records disagree in seasonal to decadal signal variability. 

Strikingly, the ability to simulate isotope variability in precipitation and isotope variability in ice cores is distinct, which suggests d-/17O-excess signal formation processes after deposition. Recently, it was demonstrated that post-depositional processes (PDP) can influence the snow isotopic composition, yet the impact of PDP on the ice core signal has not been quantified. Thus, PDP could be the missing link in our understanding of the transfer function between climate and ice core signal. SnowDOGS' hypothesis is thus that PDP, which are currently not implemented in climate models, define the ice core d-/17O-excess signals and overprint the original precipitation source region information.

SnowDOGS will quantify the impact of PDP on ice core excess signals by implementing multiple PDP in an existing snow model for the first time. Simulated d-/17O-excess records will be compared against observed ice core records from various locations on both ice sheets. SnowDOGS will clarify i) if PDP help in aligning simulated and observed isotope records, ii) to what extent PDP overprint the original source signal, and iii) what role PDP played in generating the high-frequency variability in d-/17O-excess records observed during both the current warm and the last glacial period. SnowDOGS will thus combine modeling and proxy records to improve the reconstruction and prediction of climate variability.

Snow D-excess OriGin Study

Digitalisering står sentralt i norsk bærekrafts- og energiomstillingspolitikk. Forhåpninger til digitalisering handler blant annet om effektivisering og «dematerialisering». Samtidig blir løftene rundt digitalisering sjelden sett i sammenheng med ringvirkninger av digital infrastruktur, slik som energi-, materialbruk- og konsekvenser for lokalsamfunn – materielle og stedbundne aspekter av den virtuelle «skyen» vi stadig blir mer avhengige av. 

Limits to digitalization (L2D) studerer datasentre som fenomen i lys av både global bærekraft, norsk omstillingspolitikk, og ringvirkninger for norske lokalsamfunn. Ved å dokumentere dilemmaene, konflikter og usikkerhet rundt datasentre i og på tvers av disse nivåene, vil prosjektet bidra til å se digital infrastruktur ikke bare som et redskap for effektivisering, men også for tilstrekkelighet, ved å utforske ideer og former for nøysomhet i relasjon til digitalisering. 

Prosjektets forskningsspørsmål er: Hvordan kan begreper om nøysomhet brukes på digital infrastruktur, for å forstå og forbedre konsekvensene av digitalisering? Spørsmålet studeres av et forskerteam fra NTNU Samfunnsforskning, NTNU og Boston University, som i samarbeid med lokale og nasjonale aktører gjennomfører casestudier, analyserer etiske og samfunnsmessige avveininger og utfører internasjonal komparativ forskning i kombinasjon med modelleringsaktiviteter for driftsoptimalisering.

Kommunal- og distriktsdepartementet, Nasjonal kommunikasjonsmyndighet, Invest in Norway og Norsk Datasenter Industri deler kompetanse om nasjonale rammevilkår og hensyn. Kommunene Løten, Hadsel, Hamar, Skien, Vennesla og Vågå deler sine ulike erfaringer omkring datasentre sine implikasjoner for lokalsamfunn. Kunnskapsmålene er både ny og politikkrelevant forskning om næringen og dens rolle i relasjon til bærekraft, samt nye verktøy og modeller med relevans for drift og regulering i sektoren.

The energy transition tends to foreground the efficiency of energy-intensive industries over energy sufficiency. Limits to digitalization (L2D) will address this paradox by studying digital infrastructures (e.g., data centers) to explore the socio-environmental implications of digitalization. L2D will develop a conceptual framework for digital infrastructure sufficiency, thus contributing to the challenges outlined in the portfolio plan through addressing knowledge gaps around energy and material consumption and local impacts of data center establishments, seen against the beneficial prospects of digitalization through improved efficiency, de-materialization, and value-creation. Fundamentally, L2D asks whether these tensions imply a need for “limits” to digitalization, and what such limits might look like. 

L2D explores Twin Transition challenges through the lens of Norwegian data centers. We consider energy transitions’ impacts on society, climate, and nature, through the on-going attempt by Norway to become a global hub for digital infrastructure, justified by reference to digitalization’s environmental, climate, and societal benefits. Norwegian decision makers at all levels struggle to make sense of and govern the trade-offs around data center establishments. Through a novel partnership with Norwegian municipalities, national policy makers, and industry, L2D conducts local case studies, studies national governance in a cross-national comparative perspective, and helps shape the emerging frameworks around this nascent industry. The project’s unprecedented access to and collaboration with the notoriously secretive data center industry aims to hold Norwegian industry partners accountable to the highest international standards, and enable leading scientific partners to develop knowledge and tools for improved decision-making and transparency around energy and data center governance.

Limits to digitalization: Exploring the transition challenges of Norwegian data centers

I industriell bioteknologi er en digital og automatisert revolusjon kjent som Bioprosess Industri 4.0. Denne transformative bølgen har bygget seg opp over tre tiår, drevet av store fremskritt innen bioteknologi. Genetiske modifikasjoner har gitt bakterier muligheten til å fungere som miniatyr fabrikker, som konverterer bioressurser til ettertraktede produkter som fargepigmenter, parfymer og kraftige antimikrobielle midler.

De fleste bakterier Imidlertid foretrekker glukose over andre sukkerarter, noe som begrenser vår evne til å utnytte nye bioressurser som sukkerrik tang. Tidligere forsøk på å utvide bakteriers substratpreferanser gjennom omfattende genetiske endringer har mislyktes på grunn av genetisk ustabilitet.

For å låse opp denne teknologiens potensial, står vi overfor tre nøkkelutfordringer:

Utvikle en mikrobiell bioprosess som omgår metabolske begrensninger, slik at cellene kan utføre komplekse oppgaver med minimale genetiske endringer.
Skape et sofistikert biosensor-tilbakekoblingssystem innenfor samdyrkninger for å overvåke og kontrollere deres intrikate dynamikk.
Utforme effektive metoder for samdyrkningkontroll.

Møt "AILEEN," vårt tverrfaglige teams banebrytende skapelse. AILEEN er en AI-drevet lærealgoritme som administrerer bakteriestammer i samdyrkninger. Cellefabrikkene vil effektivt konsumere de fleste sukkerarter innen komplekse substrater.

Som et supplement til AILEEN er det et toppmoderne biosensorsystem som raskt gir tilbakemelding om samdyrkningskomposisjon og forhold. AILEEN lærer kontinuerlig av samspillet med samdyrkningen og optimaliserer balanse og forhold over tid.

De praktiske implikasjonene er dype. Vi vil demonstrere hvordan AILEEN, sammen med samdyrkningsteknologi, kan fullt ut utnytte det uutnyttede potensialet til tang og produsere produkter med høy verdi. Denne monumentale transformasjonen lover å omforme industriell bioteknologi og fremme innovasjon innenfor aktiverende teknologier.

Without doubt, the future of industrial biotechnology will incorporate digitalization, automation to improve bioprocess industry 4.0. Over the last 3 decades, biotechnology have made immense progress and genetic modifications have turned bacteria into micro production units that can convert feedstocks into products desired by modern society, e.g. colors, perfumes, antimicrobials. But most microbes prefer glucose over other sugars, which prevents bioprocesses to deploy new bioresources, e.g. seaweed, that contain sugar mix. Attempts to introduce large numbers of modifications in bacteria to extend their substrate spectra have so far failed due to genetic instability. To enable this technology we need to i) develop a microbial bioprocess that can bypass this metabolic burden so the cells can perform complex operations with minimal genetic modifications ii) develop biosensor feedback system in co-cultures and iii) develop control of the co-culture despite its complex dynamics.   

Our interdisciplinary team will establish the knowledge and approach to create "AILEEN", a novel A.I. reinforcement learning algorithm that supervises a palette of strains in co-cultures, each cell can stably and rapidly consume one type of sugar in complex substrates. A novel biosensor system will provide rapid feedback about the consortia composition and co-culture conditions back to AILEEN, which learns by interaction with the co-culture how to improve its balance and conditions.  

We will demonstrate how this radically new technology can fully utilize abundant, yet unexploited brown seaweed and produce high valuable products. AILEEN, with her accompanied co-culture technology holds the potential to transform industrial bioprocess forever, moving from traditional monocultures to effective co-cultures, enabling to valorize a range of alternative bioresources. This radical bioprocess transformation will be realised across the enabling technologies industrial Biotechnology.

KSP: “AILEEN” Artificial Intelligence guided Multi-Microbial Cultivation process

Det siste års sterke svingninger og raske økninger i energiprisene har satt søkelys på hvordan den pågående omstillingen av Norge til et lavutslippssamfunn kan slå ulikt ut for ulike samfunnsgrupper. Det har vist seg utfordrende å finne politisk og økonomisk gode grep som både kan kompensere utsatte forbrukere og samtidig sikre andre mål i klima- og energipolitikken. FAIRPOWER-prosjektet vil ta for seg dette dilemmaet. Det består av tre integrerte deler: 

Arbeidspakke 1 vil utforske modellscenarioer for hvordan kraftmarkedene vil kunne respondere på lavutslippsutviklingen. Kraftmarkedene vil bli påvirket direkte, men også indirekte via andre sektorer og internasjonale markeder. Et sentralt element i omstillingen vil være å gå over fra fossil energi til fornybar kraft. Scenarioanalyse er en måte å illustrere usikkerhet på; utfallene vil avhenge ikke bare av strategivalgene i Norge, men også i utlandet, ikke minst utviklingen i og samspillet med resten av Europa. 

Med scenarioene som bakteppe vil vi i arbeidspakke 2 analysere hvordan ulike husholdningsgrupper påvirkes av energiomstillingen. Virkningene forventes å være forskjellige avhengig av husholdningenes inntekt, hvor de bor og arbeider og hva slags teknologier og energikilder de benytter til oppvarming og transport. Til disse analysene vil vi utvikle en ny husholdningsmodell som kan koples til de økonomiske scenarioene. 

In arbeidspakke 3 vil vi bruke erfaringene fra de to første delene til å vurdere mulige tiltak som kan kompensere husholdningene for økte energipriser og motvirke uønskede fordelingsvirkninger av lavutslippsomstillingen. Som del av arbeidet vil vi gå gjennom kompensasjonsordninger som er blitt brukt i ulike europeiske land siden energiprisene steg betraktelig i 2022. Vi vil sammenlikne ulike utforminger med tanke på fordelingsvirkninger, samfunnsøkonomiske kostnader og utslag på sentrale energi- og klimapolitiske mål.

The recent energy price peaks have called attention to how an accelerating low-emission transition ahead may have undesired distributional impacts. A key challenge is to design compensatory policies that do not set the transition nor other energy policy goals at risk. FAIRPOWER seeks to advance the scientific knowledge base relevant to this policy dilemma through 3 research steps. Main outcomes of Work Package (WP) 1 will be scenarios for how the power markets respond to low-emission strategies. The case is Norway, who aims to substantially electrify the economy. The use of a multisectoral, multiregional macroeconomic model system will capture interrelated adaptations across all sectors, indirect power market feedbacks and Norway’s dependency on the EU’s low-emission strategy, given their partly integrated power markets and common climate policies. The scenarios will reflect the uncertainty about how these international political and economic relations will evolve. 

WP2 will investigate distributional impacts of the low-emission transition, both across income groups and across households distinguished by a variety of attributes within income groups, incl. region, job sector and heating equipment, household composition and residential characteristics. The research will methodologically go beyond state-of-the-art by building a microsimulation model with better data, more details and simultaneity. With the consistent macroeconomic scenarios as a backdrop, we will study distributional impacts of simultaneous changes affecting households through consumer prices, investment costs and income elements. 

WP3 will use the results from WP1 and WP2 to analyse compensatory schemes. First, we will survey and analyse European recent compensatory policies. Based on this insight we will investigate how various designs can balance fairness concerns against the low-emission transition and other energy and climate policy goals in the Norwegian setting and under different scenarios.

A fair low-emission transition of the power market (FAIRPOWER)

Samtidig som innovative offshore-teknologier for fornybar energi blir stadig mer og mer populært, er driften av dem i et tøft miljø til havs en kompleks og utfordrende prosess. Det betyr altså at potensielt vitkig teknologi for våre fremtidige genrasjoner kan bli holdt tilbake på grunn av miljøet vi opplever utenfor vår kyst. Wave Energy Conversion (WEC)-enheter er dynamiske strukturer med komponenter utsatt for flere typer belastninger og nedbrytningsmekanismer som alle kan virke sammen. Derfor kan de være utsatt for noe vi kaller for multi-degraderingsmekanismer, som per nå ikke er godt nok forstått til å ha gode løsninger lett tilgjengelig. Denne mangelen på grunnleggende kunnskap og mangelen på laboratorietester som er i stand til å simulere de komplekse multi-nedbrytningsmekanismene er en av hovedårsakene til at utviklingen og implementeringen av WEC-enheter bremses.
MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) foreslår å etablere av en ny robust metodikk med nye og forbedrede verktøy for materialvalg. Målet vil være å opprette forenkle testprosedyrer som er i stand til å generere og validere neste generasjon av materialer for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) enheter, å overkommne dagens energi- og miljøutfordringer. Gjennom den kombinerte effekten av korrosjon og slitasje (tribokorosjon) og multi-degradering (tribokorrosjon akselerert av utmatting) kan man potensielt oppnå en bedre forståelse til å nettop velge ut de best egnede materialene til et slikt formål. Nyskapningen til MORE-prosjektet er basert på harmoniserende små- og storskala multi-degraderingsrigger, for å skape et raskere forløp for validering av materialer, for å muliggjøre industriell bruk av nye metoder, og forbedre systemenes pålitelighet og levetid. MORE vil demonstrere en valideringsvei gjennom testing av multi-degradering for materialer og komponenter som skal brukes i den voksene fornybare energisektoren offshore.

MORE (Next Generation Marine Materials for Resilient Offshore Renewable Energy Devices) proposes the creation of a new robust methodology with improved tools for material selection and validation to harmonize testing procedures capable of generating the next generation of materials for Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) devices, to overcome the present energy and environmental challenges.
This will be achieved by considering tribocorrosion (wear accelerated by corrosion) and multi-degradation (tribocorrosion accelerated by fatigue) in a field highly affected by these degradation mechanisms. This is a brand-new material selection methodology for the renewable energy sector compared to the current incomplete conventional material selection and validation process (DNV Guidelines1). This project will allow the offshore renewable energy sector to reach their milestones in a more resilient and realistic way, giving it an edge against its current fossil fuel competitors like the Oil and Gas (O&G) sector.
MORE’s methodology incorporates the functionality of small-scale testing, up to scaled-up devices. This approach is expected to contribute significantly to directly solving the ORE sector's challenges, making a step change improvement in the reliability, performance, lifetime predictability and longevity of their equipment.

Accelerating Water Smartness in Coastal Europe

B-WaterSmart will accelerate the transformation to water-smart economies and societies in coastal Europe and beyond. We will apply a large-scale systemic innovation approach to select, connect and demonstrate a tailored suite of technology, management and smart data solutions for multiple users and sectors, and create new business models based on circular economy and water-smartness. We bring together six cities and regions as living labs with high ambitions to address water-related challenges and opportunities – Alicante (ES), Bodø (NO), Flanders (BE), Lisbon (PT), East Frisia (DE), Venice (IT) – selected for complementarity of scale, users, sectors and challenges, and for opportunities of mutual learning, replication & upscaling through a network of followers already mobilised. We built each case around the actual problem-owner (water utility, municipality), a research partner, innovative solution providers and market-uptake partners (6 are SMEs), complemented by partners with specific crosscutting expertise (social sciences & humanities, IT, business development, water sector outreach). We will apply a participatory approach for co-creation & implementation of solutions through local Communities of Practice and a joint innovation alliance of problem owners, and develop recommendations for suitable governance models, regulation & policy instruments. We will deliver a novel framework to assess gains in water-smartness and sustainability at different scales. Our cases will demonstrate in real systems, at multiple scales, a range of promising technologies for water reuse/nutrient recovery, and smart data applications for more efficient, safe allocation & use of resources (water, energy, nutrients). For the apps, we build on FIWARE technology to enable interoperability and exchange across sectors, which is key for systemic change. All cases have defined criteria and target values to achieve by the project end and by 2040, and can build on synergies with other funding.

Norwegian Red cattle show genetic gain over the last decade in resistance towards mastitis, the most costly and common production disease world wide. The project is a collaborative project with US and Norwegian partners. We will genotype Norwegian bulls a nd analyse their DNA for mutations (SNP technology) in genes involved in/influencing the innate immune system. After progeny testing, both semiquantitative (Microarrays) and quantitative gene expression (MassArray) analysis will be performed in groups of animals with high and low disease resistance. Results will be used to identify important genes, gene networks and gene interactions influencing resistance. BoviBanks biobank will be used to validate the practical application of results as predictive infor mation/service in animal breeding and management. We are applying for a post doc to do genotyping and expressions analysis. The person will be able to work partly in the US/Canada during the 2 year period, and partly in CIGENE and in the commercialised bi obank BoviBank with state of the art technologies and emerging markets.

Identifying genes and biochemical pathways affecting disease resistance in Norwegian Cattle by functional genomics

Bacteria respond to environmental changes by rapid and complicated regulation in the gene expression consisting of overlapping global regulatory networks and adaptive genetic programmes. We want to study stress responses using DNA microarrays in different  strains of S. aureus under conditions important for survival under conditions encountered during washing, disinfection and food processing in the food industry. TIGR (The Institute for Genomic Research, USA) has chosen MATFORSK for research on food- associated S. aureus and will provide free arrays and technical support. Considering the importance of the bacterium, little is known about the genes and the regulation of genes involved in the stress responses of clinical S. aureus, even less is known fo r food related strains. There is a large variability between different strains. S.aureus strains that have caused food borne outbreaks and clinical strains will be compared by genome hybridisations. Gene expression will be determined for S. aureus that ar e subjected to different stress conditions. Biofilms will be produced on stainless steel and genes involved in early biofilm formation investigated. Selected sets of genes will be subjected to more thorough time course studies. This project may lead to ne w approaches to combat S. aureus in food and clinical environments.

Stress responses in food related Staphylococcus aureus by functional genomics

Prosjektet er tredje trinn i arbeidet med å etablere kommersiell vevskulturproduksjon av gran- og fjelledelgrankloner for juletreproduksjon. I Europa er juletremarkedet dominert av Nordmannsedelgran, i USA av Fraser edelgran. Fjelledelgran har god holdbar het, form, farge og duft og antas å ha et stort potensial i Europa. Vi vil derfor fokusere på denne. Totalt brukes mellom 90 og 170 millioner planter i juletreindustrien i Europa og USA, verdien er trolig over 500 mill. NOK. For raskt å nå målet om kommer siell produksjon har vi etablert samarbeide med CellFor i Canada og IPST i USA. Førstnevnte produserer millioner av eliteplanter basert på somatisk embryogenese i flere bartrearter. Vi får tilgang til deres teknologi for storskaladrift og de får bruke vår e erfaringer fra fjelledelgran i Fraser edelgran. CellFor vil arbeide med oppskalering ved at norsk plantemateriale blir sendt til Canada for oppformering og tilbake for utplanting i større feltforsøk. IPST. og Skogforsk vil arbeide med å forbedre protoko ller og studier av embryo modning. Vi venter at prosjektet vil gi teknologi for storskala produksjon, planter i felt og dypere forståelse av embryogenesen.

Utvikling av oppskalerte metoder for masseformering av utvalgte juletresorter av fjelledelgran og Fraser edelgran.

Prosjektet retter seg mot bekjempelse av klumprot på korsblomstrede kulturplanter som utgjør en viktig del av norsk frilandsproduksjon av grønsaker. Ulike kålarter legger beslag på ca 40% av norsk grønnsaksareal, og har en førstehåndsverdi på 218 mill kro ner. I tillegg kommer produksjonen av oljefrø med førstehåndsverdi på 77 mill kroner.

Klumprot er den mest skadelige sykdommen i disse kulturene både her i landet og ellers i verden. Sykdommen forårsakes av soppen Plasmodiophora brassica som gir unormal cellevekst og svulstdannelse på røttene. Dette fører til redusert vann- og næringsopptak, som igjen medfører sterk avlingsreduksjon og dårlig kvalitet. Avlingstapet kan i enkelte tilfelle være opp til 100% og dette  medfører store økonomiske tap. 

Påvisn ing av klumprotsmitte er per i dag vanskelig fordi P. brassica er en obligat parasitt som vi ikke kan dyrke på kunstig medium. Slik situasjonen er i dag krever diagnosen omfattende planteforsøk (bioassay) som det tar minimum 6-8 uker før en ser resultaten e av. Målet med prosjektet er å utvikle og etablere en hurtigtest for påvisning av klumprotsmitte i småplanteproduksjon av korsblomstrede kulturplanter.

Nye metoder for påvisning og bekjempelse av klumprot i korsblomstrede kulturplanter

Summary  Abscission, the process that enables plants to shed organs after they have served their function, is very important in agriculture and horticulture.  Harvest quality and quantity is dependent on control of abscission of seeds (cereals and oil seed rape), fruits and berries (fruit production) and flowers (ornamentals). Fundamental research is required to obtain a better knowledge and understanding of this physiological process, and this will ultimately provide the growers in agriculture and horticulture wi th:  - the advantage of producing quality crops with less input of chemicals, - an environmental friendly greenhouse production by improved postharvest quality.  The project will generate relevant knowledge from fundamental studies combined with a practical problem-solving approach related to post harvest quality in floriculture without using chemicals. Arabidopsis thaliana and poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) w ill be used as model plants. Floral abscission mutants of Arabidopsis, and the affected genes, as well as gene constructs designed to investigate and manipulate abscission in poinsettia will be employed. An important goal is to educate Post.docs. The proj ect is a collaboration between the University of Oslo (UiO), The Agricultural University of Norway (NLH), John Innes Centre (JIC), Norwich, UK and the University of Madison (UoM), Wisconsin, USA.

Elucidation of mechanisms of abscission using the model plant Arabidopsis and the ornamental plant poinsettia

Project summary:  Recently we succeeded in identifying key regulatory genes controlling aleurone cell fate specification and development in cereal endosperm using maize as a model species. By building on these results, the proposed project aims at understanding the genetic  and molecular mechanisms underlying aleurone cell fate specification in cereal endosperm with the goal of providing tools for improving the quality of cereal crops. The project will focus on two main areas; 1) Molecular characterization of endosperm and aleurone cell development in barley. Among the cereals, barley is unique in that the endosperm consistently  contains three layers of aleurone cells, thus barley represents a valuable natural resource for understanding the control of aleurone cell specification. This will be carried out by isolating and characterizing the barley orthologs of the genes known to be crucial for this process in maize , phenotypic and genetic characterization of the barley mutant B5 that is affected in aleurone cell fate specification, as well as expression profiling of barley endosperm by Affymetrix-technology. 2) Analyses of the b iochemical and cell biological mechanisms of aleurone cell development using Arabidopsis as model species. This will be carried out by expressing constructs containing different domains of the DEK1 protein in transgenic Arabidopsis to

Functional studies of key regulatory genes in cell fate specification of aleurone cells with application to cereal breeding

We have developed a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme for the Bacillus cereus group of bacteria (Helgason et al 2003). This group, which includes B. cereus, B. thuringiensis, B. weihenstephanensis, and B. anthracis, is known to be very diverse and is of great pathogenic as well as industrial importance.

The method has a high resolution but still detects clonal lineages. It gives a great overview of the population structure and is an excellent tool for studying the population structure and epidemio logy of the B. cereus group.

This proposal aims to further development of MLST (with partners) to investigate the population structure of the B.cereus-group and to detect isolates of industrial and medical importance.


Population studies of important industrial contaminator B. cereus using multilocus sequence typing (MLST)-continued work

This project aims to determine the function of Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in fish as a factor in testis determination, development, and maturation at puberty. AMH, also named Müllerian inhibiting substance or spermatogenesis preventing substance, belong s to the transforming growth factor-ß family. In mammals, AMH is secreted from testicular Sertoli cells. In the foetus it directs Müllerian duct regression and controls spermatogenesis by suppression of Leydig cells until puberty and may be associated wit h precocious puberty . AMH is present in fish, where it has been shown to block spermatogenesis at a very early stage by preventing the differentiation of rapidly proliferating spermatogonia. We hypothesise that AMH suppresses the expression and/or activi ty of the receptor responsible for mediating the effects of 11-ketotestosterone.

Function of Anti-Müllerian hormone in fish testis development and maturation to puberty

A high priority target in current vaccinology is the identification of adjuvants that promote stable induction of Th1 immunity but with minimal side effects. Unmethylated CpG oligodinucleotides (ODNs) within specific flanking bases (referred to as CpG mot if) are relatively abundant in bacterial DNA and are known to stimulate innate immune responses. CpG motif show promise as vaccine adjuvant in animal models, and studies by our group have shown that certain CpG motifs induce cytokine expression and stimul ate cell proliferation of Atlantic salmon leucocytes. Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) is one of the most threatening viral diseases in Norwegian aquaculture, and development of effective vaccines, as well as knowledge of protective mechanisms against this disease are important research issues to be addr essed. We have shown that particular CpG motifs induce protection against IPN virus. The aim of this project is to study efficacy of CpG motif as adjuvant for recombinant IPNV vaccines in Atlantic salmon, and to develop delivery system that enhances its i mmunostimulatory effects. Knowledge about the various processes explaining how the immune system becomes activated by the adjuvant will also be addressed.

CpG ODN as adjuvant in recombinant infectious pancreatic necrosis virus vaccines

Microbial problems and diseases have been a restricting factor for thedevelopment of a predictable and sustainable farming industry based on fish and shellfish. Probiotics are promising agents in controlling microbial problems in intensive farming of fish  and other animals. However, so far this strategy has not been very successful in aquaculture, which is in contrast to e.g. the poultry industry. This may be due to a clear bias in the strategy for selection of probiotic candidates in aquaculture. This project aims at development of more efficient probiotics for cod larvae. This will be achieved by development of high throughput methods for screening and characterization of probiotic candidates.  The application of automated methods will make it possible to include a larger number of strains and screening criteria than previously done. Although developed for use on cod larvae, the methods will be generally applicable for probiotics intended for u se in other animals and humans. The project will last for 3 years, and is a collaboration project between SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture and SINTEF Applied Chemistry.

A new strategy for screening of probiotic bacteria, applied on cod larvae

Fatty acids (FA) have been shown to promote their own reduction and deposition mainly through activating key transcription factors (PPARs) that modulate lipid metabolism in mammals. PPARs control the transcription of several genes encoding key enzymes and  proteins involved in regulation of the  -oxidation pathway, as well as in differentiation and storage of fatty acids in the major metabolic tissues of liver, muscle and adipose tissue. The aim of this study is to elucidate how selective natural, as well as synthetic fatty acids, will affect key regulatory factors in lipid metabolism in swine, particularly in relation to development, accumulation and breakdown of lipids in muscle and adipose tissue. By increasing the basic understanding of how fatty acids regulate lipid metabolism and especially regulators of ?-oxidation and adipose tissue development, diets can hopefully be designed for optimal utilisation of lipid and muscle growth. Further, it is of crucial importance to understand how the dietary manipulations affect lipid metabolism, and thereby meat quality. This study also intends to investigate the use of swine as a model organism for human biomedical and nutrition research, particularly rela ted to the widespread use of PPAR agonist to treat cardiovascular disease.

Regulation of lipid metabolism by fatty acids in swine - a functional genomic approach

We show that it is possible to express heterologous protein epitopes as parts of endogeneous surface proteins in M. capsulatus.
M. cap. will be used as vehicle for antigen presentation and immunisation. We will characterise, using injection immunisation p rotocols in rabbit and fish, the immunogenic properties of M. cap. carrying various antigenes. Since M. cap. is approved for use in animal feed, immunization experiments including oral administration of M. cap. carrying the antigens will be performed to i nvestigate such constructs' activity as orally administered immunogens.
Fish will be used as experimental model for the planned oral immunisation experiments.
To optimise immunisation efficacy, we will study different outer membrane proteins of M. cap. to  identify the optimal protein vehicle for presentation of heterologous antigens on its surface.
A PCT application (PCT/NO02/00018) claiming the use of mopE as antigen carrier has been filed in Canada, EPO, Norway, and USA.
This project is an offspring of the SUP grant no. 140785/420, "GABI", which is the basis for the genome sequencing of M. cap. and the ongoing functional genomic/proteomic studies at UoB.
