ROMFORSK-Program for romforskning

Theoretical, experimental and numerical studies of waves and turbulence in space plasmas

Awarded: NOK 0.15 mill.

The project is directed towards studies of nonlinear wave phenomena and turbulence in space plasmas. One of the goals for the activity is the study of turbulent transport, with emphasis on turbulence in magnetized plasmas. The activity will contain an eff ort concentrated on studies of the turbulent development of low frequency waves (drift waves, for instance) in magnetized, inhomogeneous plasmas. One other topic for the research will be a combined study of double-layers and anomalous resistivity in curre nt carrying plasmas. The possibility of radiation of waves from double layers and from turbulent regions in space will be investigated. We would like to place the selected topics of the activity in relation to "space weather", where it can be argued that the topics outlined here form partial problems of a larger complex. Our results are expected to be important for ionospheric and magnetospheric phenomena, and should be related to experimental observations. The project will be based on a combination of ex perimental, theoretical and numerical methods, but anticipates that the activity will have access to high quality data also from space experiments, and methods for advanced signal analysis will become relevant.
