Environmentally Engineered Flexible Modular Building Systems

Awarded: NOK 2.6 mill.

Project Manager:

Project Number:

168382

Project Period:

2005 - 2007

Location:

A consortium of companies headed by Snøhetta Modular AS are developing a unique interactive modular building system, distinguishable from its competitors by its exceptional customer interface, design flexibility, ease of procurement & transport, environme ntal performance, integration of the latest building technologies, user customization, and potential for adaptability. The building system can generally be described as a structural frame of aluminium into which wall panels in a variety of functions, styl es and materials can be installed and replaced efficiently and without detriment to the components. Research developing the aluminium connections in this system started in 2004. We now need to focus on the energy design and building services for the syste m. The plural requirements of low cost and low energy consumption make the energy performance design of the system challenging. To do this, we will exploit the characteristics of modular structures, such as integration in innovative wall or roof element s. Furthermore, the building services must be flexible in nature The work will involve technical and building physical research in the following main areas • Energy, environmental (LCA), and economic (LCC) performance. Focusing on the need to climatize and ventilate the building. Seeking out innovative synergetic solutions and passive solutions (eg. passive solar design, bioclimatic design). • Building services installations: electrical (smart house technology, power supply, tele-data), water supply & s anitation, heating/cooling & ventilation. The project will involve research, development, and testing of new solutions. Technical Approval will be sought. A pilot building will be erected. Industrialisation will occur after the project is completed.
