Optimized Heterogeneous Multiuser MIMO Networks

Awarded: NOK 12.0 mill.

This project investigates multiuser multi-input multi-output (MIMO) networks using heterogeneous wireless mobile access technologies. The aim is to develop several novel techniques by exploiting the high number of degrees of freedom offered by the network s (multiuser, space, time and frequency diversity), while guaranteeing quality of service through cross-system diversity. Important issues related to security will also be dealt with innovative signal processing techniques using the reciprocity of the cha nnel. The research will be carried out by a unique research group formed by leading researchers in Norway and international experts in the field along with Norwegian industry collaboration. This proposal deals with 3 key principles of 4G: 1) The seamles s services access, regardless of access technologies 2) Improved access quality of the wireless communication system 3) Secure wireless and robust infrastructures The proposal plans to develop realistic channel models that consider the correlation pres ent in the environment, enabling more accurate prediction of the system performance and capacity. We also intend to devise novel structures and algorithms for parameter estimation and detection in MIMO systems using the proposed channel models. The mobili ty and roaming issues will be considered for the proposed schemes and also for existing technologies and non-cooperative MIMO ad-hoc infrastructures.
