"Dyreliv I havet" was published for the first time in 1999, and it meets an important need in a wide range of courses in marine biology. The strength of the book lies first and foremost in the combination of an extremely rich pictorial content (around 120 0 high-quality underwater photos) and first-class systematic treatment. The volume has become a basic text in marine biology and fisheries science, and also has the effect of greatly encouraging further study. There is no other equivalent work on the mark et. The book is unique in both the Norwegian and international contexts and has received a great deal of praise from universities and colleges here and abroad. An English edition appeared in 2003. A comprehensive revision of the book is now required. Suc h a revision ought to include a major expansion of the areas that book needs to cover, the further development of certain chapters and a revision of the methodological presentation. In concrete terms, this would involve the following aspects: * tighter e diting of required reading and reference material to make the book more useful as a textbook, in accordance with wishes expressed by universities and colleges. * expansion into new regions, including the Baltic, parts of the North Sea and Svalbard. These are new areas that need to be dealt with if the book is to cover all northern European waters. * improvement of the chapter on fish, including more photos and drawings. * renewal of the pictorial material, wherever we have access to even better photos of certain species. * updating in line with new knowledge, plus any corrections where inaccuracies in the existing text have been discovered. * revision of the chapters that deal with environmental impacts, etc., in line with current developments. We estima te that the revision will increase the number of pages from 608 to 768. The revised edition will be attractive on both the German and UK markets. We are in contact with publishers in these countries.
