Within the frame of this project, a solar cell technology based on very thin crystalline silicon substrates utilizing nanostructures and novel materials for dramatically enhancing the solar cell efficiency through an improved utilization of the solar spec trum will be developed. This is a highly relevant topic for the present call for proposals. A group of nanostructured materials exhibiting the unique physical properties of low-dimensional systems will be investigated, and their potential suitability for enhancing the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells beyond that obtainable by conventional silicon-based cells determined.
