Template based synthesis of nanoporous metal-organic frameworks with high surfaces areas

Awarded: NOK 6.4 mill.

Metal-organic frameworks, also known as coordination polymers, have eminently promising properties regarding application as gas storage systems, sensors, magnetic materials, in ion exchange or catalysis. The principal objective of the project is to prepar e novel micro- to nanoporous metal-organic framework compounds with high surface area for application in gas storage and separation. We propose to introduce porosity into the target systems by addition of templating compounds or structure directing agents during synthesis. By utilization of high-throughput instrumentation we will be able to cover a large parameter space within a given system of metal and organic linking component, e.g. concentration and type of additive, which will enable us to discover t he pertinent conditions leading to porous products. Promising candidates will be fully characterized to elucidate their structure and physical properties, with an emphasis on investigating the properties of the evacuated porous substances regarding stabil ity and gas adsorption properties.
