Strategic project to improve competence in alternative distributed energy systems in the low populated arctic environment of Northern Norway

Awarded: NOK 4.2 mill.

As an energy rich country, Norway must concentrate on flexible exploitation of existing energy sources like water, oil, gas and other environmental-friendly sources as tidal- , sun and wind energy. The specific Norwegian northern territory with a long c oast line and highland area has many challenges. The power demand analysis with respect to efficient power production technology leads to a solution with distributed (along coast line) power production for local demands systems. To achieve main goal to i mprove competence in field of electric energy conversion systems for distributed energy sources the following actions will be taken at NUC: 1. Establishing contacts network within distributed power generation area in cooperation with national and internat ional partners like NTNU, SiNTEF which can strategically aim NUC at EU-WF7 program European Technology Platform SmartGrids ?Electricity Network of the Future? 2. Locally one dr.ing- Ph.D. student and up to 3 diploma students each ear will continue researc h on most interesting problem of energy conversion in Norwegian northern environment. 3. Project will give opportunity for researchers from NUC to extend cooperation with foreign research centers by means of financing it?s activity. 4. Development of new solutions and extended research methods like simulation and the practical low scale models. The lab model testing will reinforce lab facility and give opportunity for dissemination of the results in form of new courses.
