A JOint Numerical Sea MODelling conference, JONSMOD 2008, to be held in Bergen 23-26 June 2008

Awarded: NOK 59,999

The JONSMOD, JOint Numerical Sea MODelling, conferences were originally formed out of research programmes in the 1970s for the North Sea involving both measurements and numerical modelling of flow and waves in the North Sea. In 1981, Phil Dyke became the chairman, and he has since then been chairing this conference every second year. The goals have been: a) To run a conference on numerical ocean modelling, especially modelling for shallow seas, every second year, b) To encourage young scientists to pres ent their work in a friendly, unthreatening atmosphere, to an informed and experienced audience, and c) To published a selection of papers in international high quality refereed journals, hence giving young researchers a foot on the ladder into a research career. The focus in the first meetings was to a large extent on the North Sea. In recent meetings, the focus has been more on sea modelling issues in general, and the meetings have attracted participants also from USA, Canada, and countries around the Mediterranean. The talks and discussions have been on recent advances in numerical methods for ocean modelling and applications of ocean models. The conferences rotate between the participating countries. The meeting was held in Bergen in 1984, and it wa s in Oslo 1996. During the JONSMOD 2006 held in Plymouth it was decided that the meeting was to be held in Bergen 2008. Jarle Berntsen and Bjørn Ådlandsvik agreed to be local hosts for JONSMOD 2008.
