Issues concerning emission reduction of particular relevance in the design stage may be summarised in four key factors:
1. Increasing the logistics chain efficiency (kwh produced/work performed)
2. Increasing the efficiency of the ship(s) (kwh produced/w ork performed)
3. Increasing the specific fuel efficiency (grams fuel/kwh produced)
4. Reducing the specific emission per fuel unit (grams emission/gram fuel)
None of these may be neglected during design stage, and the pre-project will develop a larger m ain project to be proposed during the next call for applications, October 15th 2008.
The pre-project will include the following main activities:
? Identify, investigate, describe and align to relevant ongoing research and development activities so as t o reduce overlap, for instance MARLEN, Ship4C and other external and internal activities.
? Delimit the scope of the project, setting main objectives and main deliverables.
? Scope and test relevant tools on which to base the R&D and prototyping work in t he project.
? Identify relevant (use) cases on which to focus, and adapt the prioritisation of theoretical approach to this.
? Identify and discuss with relevant industry partners, covering the roles of classification society, ship designer, ship owner an d contractor.
? Based on the above mentioned main activities; establish a project consortium, create an activity plan with schedules, and develop a cost plan and financing scheme for a main project.
