Motion Capture Equipment for Interdisciplinary Research on Music, Motion, Minds, and Machines

Awarded: NOK 2.6 mill.

This project aims at advancing our knowledge of music-related body movement by way of a state-of-the-art motion capture equipment and a database for music-related body movement data from this equipment so that the data may be shared with other researchers nationally and internationally. Studying music-related body movement is an eminently interdisciplinary endeavor, requiring competence and skills from musicology, informatics, psychology, medicine, and human movement science, to mention the most important fields here, hence the sharing of data by way of such a database is also high on our list of priorities. The present application has the following two main elements: 1) Procuring a high-quality motion capture system based on infrared cameras to be mount ed in a circle around a person (musician, dancer, listener, etc.) who has reflective markers on her/his body so that the system can record the position of these markers with very high temporal precision (up to 4000 times per second) and very high spatial resolution as well (of less than one millimeter). From the marker position data it is then possible to capture and process various motion features, e.g. position, postures, speed, acceleration, deceleration, etc., features that can be correlated with soun d features. 2) Employing a software engineer to work on a database for music-related movement data from such an infrared camera system (but also movement data from other, more low-cost sensors such as pressure sensors, flex sensors, and accelerometers, as well as more conventional input devices such as various digital musical instruments, and even from video). Such a database will enable a well-ordered storage and efficient retrieval of music-related movement data by researchers in Norway and abroad. Such a database also necessitates that we have formats for streaming and storing motion capture data, something that we have already started to develop.
