This proposal involves transfer of the CMET balloon technology from US to Norwegian scientists through common fieldwork in Ny-Ålesund in 2010 and 2011. Multiday flights with CMET balloons will be valuable for the modeling community for improving transport models used to predict pollution in the Arctic as described below. The proposed activity is an extension of the collaboration between Paul Voss, Andreas Stohl, Lars R. Hole and others within the RCN-funded project IPY POLARCAT (International Polar Year , www.polarcat.no). CMETs fully adapted to the Arctic environment will be a very useful tool in future projects involving studies and monitoring of tropospheric pollution transport to the Arctic. Since Svalbard is located in one of the main pathways for Arctic transport, knowledge of transport properties in this area is of particular interest.
