Acid Gas Removal with no dammaging Effect on the Environment in offshore applications

Awarded: NOK 19.5 mill.

-

The potential for improvement in the existing commercial processes relies on: - better integration with existing systems, allowing for more energy-efficient and low-cost concepts - need to phase out many of the chemicals being used at present in offshore applications - integration with CO2 and H2S transport and storage systems - reduction of footprint and potential for subsea applications The scientific work is organized in five Work Packages (WP). WP1 to WP4 focus on the new technologies and concepts th at "A GREEN Sea" wants to mature, classified after their working principle: - WP1: Development of inorganic microporous membranes and hybrid membrane contactors - WP2: Low temperature concepts as primary method and as a part of hybrid/integrated concept s - WP3: Feasibility of solid adsorption concepts for acid gas removal - WP4: New solvent systems at lower cost and energy requirement with acceptable environmental properties (yellow or green chemicals) for high pressure CO2 separation WP5 will ensure the relevance of the work to the partners in the project, provide the basis for a consistent analysis and, as the project progresses, will look at concept integration and assessment. The work will be done using both experimental and simulation technique s. Fundamental studies, including thermodynamics, and research on the material issues WP 1 to WP4 are of a great importance for process understanding and modelling. 2 PhD candidates and 2 Post Doc candidates within acid gas removal technologies will be ed ucated. SINTEF Energy Research, SINTEF Materials and Chemistry and NTNU will work in close interaction as R&D providers. The industral partners in the project represent the oil and gas industry and will take active part in the work in order to facilitat e the take-up of the results and guide the research work towards the industrial challenges.
