Successful achievement of the goals implies meeting the following challenges: - Mechanical integration of the machine and, possibly, converter into the turbine. - Direct and mixed coupling of PM machines to the grid. - Dinamic operation due to pressure i nstability (pulsations). - Mechanical field control. - Medium voltage (MV) stator working directly in water. - Segmentation of stator. - Interdisciplinary competence required from the designers. - Creation of variable speed turbine providing higher system efficiency. Many of the listed challenges correspond to new academic topics, first of all mixed coupling to the grid, mechanical field control, segmentation of the stator. Moreover, applying the novelties together leads to synergy effect and makes the p roject advanced compared to state of the art solutions. The project results will form the new knowledge within the field of special PM machines in generation mode, their topologies, design, etc. To build a theoretical basis and practical design competenc e for the application area it is planned to establish 1 PhD study at NTNU on el-mag system modeling (3D FEA on super-computers). The main ways to meet the R&D challenges are: - Working in close contact with the turbine manufacturer and energy companies to elaborate specifications for the novel generator and power electronics converters. - Applying new technologies and approaches, such as for example mechanical field control. - Development of multi-disciplinary mathematical models and design tools. - Bui lding and testing prototypes of electric generators and power electronics converters and the turbine. It is planned to build five prototypes. Results of the research program will help to offer less expensive solutions to the power plant builders and ene rgy companies.
