Sustainable and green solutions for online media in enhanced networks

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

The rapid growth of legal and illegal peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing services, combined with social network services (SNS), creates not only new opportunities but also several challenges to the digital media industry: - How to monitor traffic with a di gital content to secure fair revenue to rights holders, and still protect the privacy of individuals? - How to avoid a massive growth in the energy consumption caused by increased data traffic and large-scale computing processes, required for real-time de liveries and monitoring? -How to meet the threats of the piracy industries, which will be further accelerated by high-speed mobile networks with up to 100 mbps and increasingly cost-effective storage solutions, and turn the technological achievements int o new business opportunities for the creative industries? - How to integrate new metadata services and business models with the most common end user devices and day-to-day surroundings (immersive environments), and thereby increase the user experience eno ugh to reduce the attraction of unauthorized services? The project aims to address the above challenges, by utilizing already existing interdisciplinary building blocks from the partners in the consortium. The project will focus on designing, implementing , testing, prototyping and validating the various components required, and to create a solution that later on can be licensed to the Creative and ITC industries. With a revenue potential of 120-240 Million Euro annually for providers of enabling technolo gies for legal file sharing, the project has a significant commercial potential. Since data traffic consumption of P2P networks rose from around 10% in 2000 to over 70% of all Internet traffic in Europe in 2007, a key goal of the project is to create viab le business models for data traffic reductions, and thereby reductions in computing and transmission costs.
