Thor Heyerdahl Summer School in Environmental Governance

Environmental governance encompasses processes that shape how social priorities are made, how conflicts are acknowledged and possibly resolved, and how human coordination is facilitated in the field of the environment. Governance is not only government. I t also includes actors such as communities, businesses and NGO's. It concerns coordination and conflict resolution at the global level involving the formulation of international treaties - both environment and trade related treaties and their interaction. It involves national policies formulating conditions for the activities of firms, households and individuals. Finally, it concerns local adaptation including the direct interplay between human action and natural resource dynamics. The proposed school w ill be offered to PhDs/young researchers and organized at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB). It is planned to last for 2 weeks and involve 25 participants. Including necessary preparation plus the writing of a paper, the course will earn par ticipants 10 ECTS credits if passing requirements. Lecturers will consist of both internationally and nationally renowned experts in the relevant fields. Noragric/UMB will be responsible for running the summer school series. A reference group for the c ourse series is established with participation from CICERO, Fridtjof Nansen Institute, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, the Thor Heyerdahl Institute and Noragric.
