The G-MAC project shall develop effective and lasting antifouling properties, using only environmentally friendly additives, for the newly developed carbon nano tube (CNT) reinforced marine coating for use under the waterline. The main objective of the p roject is to design new environmentally friendly additives and/or release methods that by themselves or in combination can create an antifouling effect for CNT reinforced marine coatings up to par or better than existing toxic solutions. The G-MAC projec t will provide low surface friction to vessels over time (5-10 years). A radical approach is taken to modify marine coatings by introducing new environmentally friendly methods and additives with antifouling properties that will be released under externa l stimuli (on-demand) and contribute to long lasting antifouling protection and reduced surface friction on vessels. The most critical R&D challenge is to realise a coating with low friction and at the same time with long lasting antifouling properties. It is also a challenge to be able to encapsulate the antifouling additives and at the same time having controlled release properties. If successful a new generation of antifouling coatings will give the opportunity to considerably reduce fuel consumption and CO2/NOx emissions.
