China: New Light Metals Energy Materials and Novel Light Environmental Friendly Constructions and Solutions

Awarded: NOK 0.50 mill.

The JRC Agreement "Light Metals and New Energy Materials" between NTNU and SJTU was officially established in Shanghai, May 26th, 2010 in occasion of the signing ceremony acted by the President of SJTU (Zhang Jie) and the NTNU Rector (Torbjørn Digernes). The ceremony also included the Norwegian State secretary for Ministry of education and research (Kyrre Lekve), representatives of the Research Council of Norway and professors from NTNU Materials and SJTU Materials. The present project is a tool for reali zation of the goals and ambitions for the JRC, and also, to perform a pilot develolpment used as a model for future bi-lateral and international programs at larger scale and in many research areas. The project is organized in accordance to the JRC Agreeme nt, i.e. a PL from Norway and a secondary PL in China (Chinese Proj. Resp., CPR). A balanced key-staff team with professors focusing on light new energy materials (batteries, hydrogen storage, fuel cells, etc.), lower energy consumption LM structural solu tions for the automotive (electric cars), energy efficient & minimized CO2 and low pollution emissions recycling techn. for light metals, Si- and bio-materials solar cells, etc. The project members reports to the JRC Board; the involved Deans on both side s, the Dir. of Eng. & Materials of NSF-China, Director of the Nat'l Light Metals Center at SJTU, Head of the Dept. Mat. Sci. & Eng. at NTNU and the Dir. of SA Materials at NTNU. The financing is rougly shared between the RCN and the NSF-China, same with t he NTNU and SJTU university side funding. The project description and budget has been developed jointly by the leadership and key staff on both sides. The institutional and national anchorage is outermost solid (National agreeements, Institutional- and De partmental agreements) and the PL (also Guest professor at SJTU) has been working with SJTU over the last 8 years. Successful fundning is absolutely necessary for realization of the JRC and its project mass by 2011.
