The main objective of this project is to maximize value creation from natural gas by conversion of natural gas into the value chain for production of human food. This will be achieved by optimizing the technology of manufacturing BioProtein, a gas-based, environmentally friendly and sustainable feed ingredient consisting of mainly the methanotrophic bacteria Methylococcus capsulatus. BioProtein is an EU-approved protein source with documented high quality as an alternative feed ingredient for demanding sp ecies like salmon and trout. It is however of great importance to further improve the knowledge of factors influencing production efficiency and cost. In this project the fermentation technology will be modified using continuous fermentation in small scal e fermenters in efforts to improve efficiency and reduce cost. It is expected that this innovative research will reduce production cost and open new market channels for BioProtein. The results will serve as the foundation for establishing commercial produ ction of BioProtein, thus strengthening the Norwegian gas industry as well as users along the value chain towards sustainable food production.
