The Origins of "Antropogeografiska" and the Use of Väinö Tanner in Sami Research. The Book, Discursive Fields, Canonisation.

Research project is in its final phase and I am able to present research results. Relevant parts of the archive have been gone through. One result is a deeper attachment of Tanner into the racial paradigm and discourses than what was estimated before. This was a factor that influenced the book in many ways. His encounter with the Skolt Sami informants in the field, depicted earlier as warm and respectful, has to be re-adjusted. He used various Sami as sources for information, but in the book he showed a bias in their usage: The informants from the majority population received a stronger, unquestioned voice in the book. As a Finland-Swedish researcher, Tanner had a more complicated relationship to his home-country than what was the case among most «Lappologists» in Norway and Sweden. This led him to surrender his research to an identity political agenda, where he criticized the Finnish policies in Petsamo and tried to locate different folk-groups higher than the Finns in the timely hierarchies. Simultaneously, these hierarchies located the Skolt Sami as the group with lowest status; this created unsolved tensions in the book, since Tanner tried to use the Sami in the mentioned anti-Finnish project. The reception history and the analysis of the different readings of Tanner revealed a critical turn, which has taken place earlier in Finland than in Norway. This has had consequences to the way Tanner has been used in committee reports on Sami rights: readings in Norway are more loyal to Tanner than in Finland.

Prosjektet handler om vitenskaplig virksomhet og identitetspolitikk til den finske geograf Väinö Tanner. Hans verk om Skoltesamene er en klassiker, som er vidt referert og brukt i forskning om samisk samfunn i nå- og fortid. Prosjektet skal sette verket i dets kontekster, granske vitenskapelige og politiske diskurser Tanner var inspirert av og hvilke han skrev imot. Prosjektet skal generere ny viten om Tanner sin identitetspolitikk, og de vitenskaplige miljøene, der kunnskap om samene og samisk samfunn va r produsert før andre verdenskrigen. Hovedkilden for forskningen er Tanner sin personlig arkiv, som er bevart ved Tromsø Museum. Andre delen av prosjektet fokuserer på resepsjonen og bruk av Tanner sin verk i samisk forskning. Inkorporeringen av "Antropo geografiska", hans hovedverk, i det Samiske masternarrativet skal granskes med intertekstuell og historiografisk grep. Også forandringene i politisk bruk av verket skal granskes, med sammenlignende grep i Nordiske landene. Hvordan har verket blitt eksplis itt brukt i forskning som støtte til samiske rettighetskrav angående land og vann? Og, hva inspirerer den nylige kritikken av bruk av verket blant historikere i Finland? Denne delen av prosjektet skal produsere ny viten om forskningspolitikken i Nordiske landene, nordisk og samisk nasjonbygging i forskningen, identitetspolitikken og politiske premissene for kunnskapsproduksjon rundt samisk forskning med langt historisk perspektiv.
