Accidents on petroleum installations can result in huge environmental damages, as well as loss of life, human injuries and economic loss. The cause of accidents is often a set of events happening simultaneously. Petroleum installations are very complex. A lot of technical systems are in use today to optimize the processes and reduce the risk. But these systems are to a little degree integrated to give a total risk overview on the installation. Today, the total risk evaluations are mostly left to humans a lone, often based on relatively static data in table form. Such an approach is time consuming, restricts the type and amount of data that can be taken into consideration, and has a risk that combinations of some relevant data are not evaluated at all. It also limits the frequency of evaluations. By reducing the likelihood or consequence of accidents through better solutions for risk assessments, early detection of threat scenarios and identification of suitable mitigation options, the project will create value for society as a whole as well as the petroleum industry and contribute to : - less environmental damage. - less loss of life and human injuries. - less economic loss, caused by stop in production, material damage and resourced used to follow up a n incident. It is underlined that the solution is not intended to take decisions or implement actions automatically, but serve as an assistant to the operator to provide him with a best possible updated risk overview at all times. The main R&D challenge s are: - to facilitate extraction of the relevant knowledge about operational risks from the experts of the organization. - to facilitate the understanding of how a given risk level should be computed from the set of identified sensor data. - get dynamic status of all the barriers. - find the best method for determining which irregular data patterns that should trigger a warning. - find the best method for selecting the mitigation options to be presented.
