A fingerprint system-on-card for contactless transactions has been successfully developed. The biometric card includes on-board fingerprint capture and recognition. A person's credentials are released over RF communication subsequent to the fingerprint authentication adding card security in a user-friendly and cost effective way. The solution is very attractive from a privacy perspective since fingerprint information is securely stored and never leaves the card. As part of the project IDEX has developed and a new flexible SmartFinger® fingerprint sensor and software for card integration. The inlay circuitry and prototype card has been designed and manufactured by UINT. The card is powered by a chargeable battery and the charging can be accomplished with almost any 13.56 MHz reader. Preliminary tests indicate 200 authentications per charge are achieved. With a fingerprint system-on-card solutions personal ID verification is accomplished independent of centralized fingerprint databases and utilizes existing infrastructure. On-card fingerprint systems, hence, solves virtually all privacy and security issues related to conventional card-based fingerprint ID systems. Since the fingerprint sensors sits on the card, the biometric system-on-cards communicates with existing infrastructure of standard smartcard and RF readers. System roll-out and maintenance, hence, become substantially simplified and cost efficient.

The BIRDS project aims to develop an innovative NFC (contactless) payment card with an embedded biometric sensor. In an exponential market, this match-on-card solution will revolutionize the banking transactional market segment, offering a high level of s ecurity with EMV compliant uses.
