Enhancing Norwegian and International Sea Ice Research Collaboration

The main goal of the project is to integrate national and international sea-ice related interests and activities into a more coherent and interconnected set of activities with a considerably increased likelihood of successfully addressing the existing cha llenges of observing, explaining and predicting sea ice on a range of practically useful time scales. To achieve this, the sea ice research and user communities will be invited to participate in 3 workshops; the first concentrating on Norwegian sea ice ac tivities and needs, the second bringing together international sea ice initiatives, and the third workshop aiming to bring these workshop results to the global climate prediction community. The progression of these workshops will ensure Norwegian expertis e is coordinated nationally, ties into international research initiatives, and feeds directly into global climate predictions. By bringing together international sea ice experts and early career researchers in Arctic and Antarctic regions, the outcome of this series of workshops will help make greater progress on understanding parameters involved in Antarctic sea ice prediction, rapid changes in Arctic sea ice, sea ice connections with the warming climate, and better represent the underlying processes tha t contribute to model development; all enhancing our ability to project future climate changes for the benefit of society. CliC and NPI will work closely with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists to ensure meaningful involvement of the next generation of Norwegian and International sea ice researchers. Keynote lectures will be recorded and archived online. Outcomes will be published in various journals and newsletters, distributed through listserves, and presented at conferences, to policy m akers and to the general public. Workshop participants will contribute to a series of short videos to help enhance our understanding of the important role of ice in global climate.
