Professor II; Lesson Study in Teacher Education

Awarded: NOK 0.68 mill.

-

We are applying for a grant to cover the cost of a 34-month collaboration (20% position) with Dr. Aki Murata, University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Aki Murata is currently one of the most influential U.S. educational researchers who specialize in tea cher education and teacher learning with lesson study. She is already a member of the Reference Group established for the research project "Teachers as Students" (TasS-project, grant from NFR, PRAKUT-program) where a main goal is to develop Lesson Study a s a method for teacher education and assess its contributions to students' learning. Murata's main input will be related to the implementation of lesson study within the TasS-project and research on this. A grant to enable closer collaboration will make it possible for Norwegian teacher education researchers to share in her wealth of knowledge and experiences from working with lesson study educators in the United States. She will, without doubt, notice early signs of needs to modify and adapt the proces s to specific Norwegian contexts. By doing so, we will also come to better understand our own educational culture and its values. In addition to a yearly visit for a TasS workshop-week (already included in the budget for TasS), this project will includ e further seminars for a national audience, counseling and co-authorship. It will also enable researchers at UiS to become familiar with US researchers and provide a foundation for future research and collaboration.
