Rebound effects in Chinese Electricity Sector

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

In China, energy efficiency improvement has been raised as the prominent means for achieving a viable and durable transition to a low carbon and sustainable society. However, the phenomenon of the rebound effect poses a serious threat to the goal of reduc ing energy use by enhancing energy efficiency: the rebound effect can actually lead to an increase in energy consumptions because of an energy efficiency gain. The pre-project focus on rebound effects in Chinese electricity sector, considering the fact th at coal accounts for over two-thirds of primary energy use and over half of coal is used for electricity generation in China. By means of workshops and discussions with partners and external experts, the pre-project will identify key theoretical and pract ical issues in order to address the rebound effects in Chinese electricity sector (RECES). The final output will be a complete proposal for a full project on RECES. The full project will be a multidisciplinary project that merges contributions from electr ic engineering, economics and other social sciences.
