The 2nd Bioforsk-HAAS Symposium on environmental research: two years review and outlook

Awarded: NOK 0.20 mill.

With fast economic development in China during the past two to three decades, a number of problems and environmental challenges have occurred parallel. Severe soil and water pollution have been the problems across the whole China. Internationalization i s one of the main strategic priorities in Bioforsk. China is one of the countries Bioforsk has invested great efforts and considerable progress has been made in recent years. Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China is among the most important agricul tural regions in China, and HAAS is a major player in agricultural research and development related issues in China. HAAS and Bioforsk have therefore established a Joint Research Center (JRC) in Harbin, China, September 7, 2011 by joint efforts of Biofors k and HAAS with support of leaderships at Bioforsk and HAAS, Research Council of Norway, the Norwegian Embassy in Beijing, Heilongjiang provincial government and Ministry of Science and Technology in China. The formal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Lar s Peder Brekk, appreciates the formalization of the cooperation between Bioforsk and HAAS. ?This is great. Food security is of international interest and concern, and all research that can contribute to a positive development in this area is a step in the right direction. ? Since the establishment of JRC, two years ago, Bioforsk and HAAS have had numerous collaborative activities including hosting PhD students from HAAS to Bioforsk, scientific visits from both sides, applying projects by joint efforts fr om MOST and NFR, and preparing joint publications on environmental research in a Special Issue which will be launched at the 2nd Bioforsk-HAAS symposium September 5-12, 2013 at Bioforsk, Norway. The 2nd Bioforsk-HAAS symposium will 1) focus on the environ mental issues which are highly relevant to both Norway and China, 2) exchange knowledge and experiences acquired during the past years, and 3) identify future research topics and draw a road map.
