ARTEMIS-prosjekt CONCERTO Guaranteed Component Assembly with Round Trip Analysis for Energy Efficient Multi-core systems

Awarded: NOK 4.0 mill.

Understanding the safety properties of complex systems, such as petroleum installations, is very difficult. However, lack of understanding can have huge consequences in terms of life and health, the environment and economical cost. The CONCERTO project is developing support for analysis of safety as well as other non-functional properties of complex systems in the form of methods, languages and tools. CONCERTO is a European project with participants from many countries. The Norwegian part of CONCERTO focu ses on analysis of safety properties for petroleum installations. However, CONCERTO addresses also other non-functional properties, and involves domains such as medicine, telecom, aerospace and automotive.

Emerging heterogeneous and complex systems raise difficult challenges w.r.t. understanding their non-functional properties. Yet such an understanding is critical. For example, lacking understanding of the safety properties of a petroleum installation may lead to major accidents resulting in loss of life, environmental damage and economic loss. The project aims to provide new approaches to analyse and monitor non-functional properties based on suitable system and component models. The following are major R &D challenges: 1 Develop modelling languages that allow the properties of interest to be captured, without cluttering the model with irrelevant aspects that make the model hard to understand. The languages need to balance the need to model complex embedd ed systems consisting of heterogeneous software and hardware components with the need to ensure that models can be understood also by human analysts. They should also facilitate presentation at different levels of abstraction. 2 Develop methods to suppor t model-based analysis of complex embedded systems that are feasible in terms of time and resources. 3 Develop tools to monitor properties so that an up-to-date picture is available at all times and early warnings can be given in case of deviations. Appl ication of project results in the petroleum domain has the potential to reduce the number of safety incidents, thereby avoiding loss of lives, environmental damages and economic loss. There is also great potential for reducing costs through better approac hes to system analysis, which will reduce the effort required to perform the analysis. These potential gains do not only apply to the petroleum domain, however, as the project seeks to deliver results that are sufficiently general to be applied in multipl e domains. The international CONCERTO project includes the medical, telecom, aerospace and automotive domains as well as petroleum.
