Detailed mapping of the active layer and top permafrost potential carbon release in central Svalbard. RiS ID:6650

Awarded: NOK 30,013

The overall main objectives of the present work are to: (1) Investigate high potential SOC (soil organic carbon) areas where little data is available about permafrost and active layer carbon storage/release. Sites will be selected according to aerial pict ures study in landforms containing high amount of carbon in valley areas easy to access in winter time. (2) Assess the quantity, lability and landscape distribution of SOC in the upper 2m that is the active layer and the top permafrost. (3) Upscale the data to central Spitsbergen to quantify the actual amount and rate of release of SOC as well as its potential under changing climate conditions.
