Workshop on collaboration and coordination within the Ny-Ålesund Atmospheric Flagship Programme

Awarded: NOK 0.11 mill.

Ny-Ålesund offers an excellent location for observing key climate and atmospheric parameters from the atmospheric boundary layer up to tens of km above Earth. Many such atmospheric measurements have been performed in Ny-Ålesund for decades already by rese archers from many nations. In 2008 a SSF workshop was initiated to discuss focus areas in atmospheric research in Ny-Ålesund, which led to the Atmospheric Research Flagship programme as part of the NySMAC science plan for Ny-Ålesund. Now, five years late r it is time to revisit the flagship agenda and create better and more productive collaborations, between researchers in Ny-Ålesund from different institutions and between researchers at different sites in Svalbard. The workshop will bring together key p eople studying the atmosphere in Ny-Ålesund and at other sites at Svalbard to become better acquainted with each others work and interests, and to establish or strengthen collaborations. The workshop shall prepare joint publications about previous measure ments and campaigns. Results will also include plans for new activities, including not only new measurements, but also detailed plans for new international and cross-station research that can be done with existing data and measurements that can provide mo re value together than they would separately.
