Long term archiving of digital data on film as storage medium is becoming an established technology. It is well understood that the amount of data for longterm archiving is growing exponentially and at the same time the market is demanding desperately for such kind of services. Enhancing data density on the medium (film) is a crucial aspect for success of the technology. Major challenges for scanning and reconstruction of digital data in today?s scanners: - Geometrical distortions - Aspect ratio problem s - Too low oversampling - Grid noise from pixelated frame structure - Pixel tracking in frame - Leveling across frames - Frame detection via corner marks and frame borders - Synchronization limitations due to position detection via perforations. - Prefi ltering for compensation of MTF loss Project objectives: - Design, develop and demonstrate an ultimate high performance data reconstruction system for reliable, consistent and fast reconstruction of digital content recorded for longterm archival storage . - Investigate on new optical concepts (scanner optics and illumination system) - Investigate on new mechanical concepts (specifically the film transport system) to eliminate artifacts from limited stability and steadiness of current film transport syst em to accelerate the scanning process and reduce need for redundancy. - Develop new software and algorithms to handle the massive amounts of raw data from scanning and extract the digital data content while also enhancing the reconstruction speed and prec ision. Investigations would look into different algorithms for the different data layers/wavelengths while applying different software filters per each channel etc. - Develop new electronics systems to provide the largest possible bandwidth to handle the massive amounts of raw data and accelerate their intelligent processing. In order to solve these issues Cinevation need to partner up with the right companies and look into how the project can be precisly defined.
