Limb wounds in horses are common, however healing is exceedingly slow and fraught with complications. Contrary to body wounds, limb wounds demonstrate only a small amount of wound contraction. The specialist procedure of applying split-thickness skin grafts to limb wounds stimulates wound contraction by unknown mechanisms. The objective of this project is to identify those mechanisms to develop a treatment strategy for equine limb wounds for use in general  practice. Limb wounds are severely impacting animal welfare due to an extended healing/treatment duration, and the risk of euthanasia due to a poor functional outcome. By stimulating wound contraction, healing time will be reduced, and the functional outcome improved, directly benefitting the welfare of wounded horse and reducing treatment cost for the owner. Aim: To identify dermal components stimulating wound contraction, and to develop this knowledge into future state-of-the-art treatment of equine limb wounds for use in general practice. Hypotheses: i) Application of dermal fractions to collagen gels seeded with equine fibroblasts will increase gel contraction in vitro; ii) Application of dermal fractions to experimental limb wounds in vivo, will increase wound contraction resulting in a faster healing time versus wounds treated by conventional methods. Methods: i) The contractile effect of different dermal components will be assessed in a collagen gel/ fibroblast model; ii) Identified dermal components will be tested in a standardized experimental limb wound model in vivo (n=5). Ultimately, results from this project are expected to improve wound treatment in horses, directly impacting animal welfare by reducing healing time and improving the functional outcome of wounded horses. This will also directly benefit horse owners and caretakers and making veterinarians able to offer better treatment solutions.

HESTEFORSK - Raskere og bedre sårheling hos hest med autologe hudkomponenter

Prosjektet «Wheelchair Activity Monitoring» (WHAM) sikter både på å øke fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere, og på å bidra til bredere mål om mangfold og inkludering av personer med nedsatt mobilitet, ved å fremme større tilgjengelighet og deltakelse gjennom innovativ teknologi og forskning.

Rullestolbrukere er tre til fem ganger mindre aktive enn den generelle befolkningen, noe som øker risikoen for å utvikle forebyggbare sykdommer. Selv om det finnes retningslinjer for fysisk aktivitet som er tilpasset rullestolbrukere, trenger vi fortsatt effektive måter å implementere disse på samt nøyaktig teknologi for å spore mulige endringer i fysisk aktivitet. WHAM har som mål å bidra til økt fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere ved å lage digitale verktøy for å monitorere og gi tilbakemelding på rullestolbrukerens aktivitet. WHAM består av tre faser: to år ved University of British Columbia (UBC), som inkluderer et samarbeid med eksperter innen atferdsendrings-intervensjoner for rullestolbrukere; ett år ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU) og et halvt år ved Maastricht Instruments - de to siste fasene er viet til å utvikle de digitale teknologiene. 

WHAMs mål er:
1)	Å teste effekten av et treningsprogram på fysisk aktivitetsnivå og fitness blant rullestolbrukere,
2)	Å utvikle nøyaktige algoritmer for monitorering av fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere,
3)	Å lage et system som både monitorerer og gir tilbakemelding på fysisk aktivitet blant rullestolbrukere.

Wheelchair users (WCU) are three to five times more inactive than the general population, leading to a high risk of developing preventable secondary conditions. Although physical activity (PA) guidelines have been specifically developed for WCU, we lack systematic approaches to implement them in practice, as well as valid algorithms to monitor PA change in WCU through sensor-based solutions. Accordingly, the overall scientific aim of the WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM) is to advance PA research and practice in WCU by developing valid digital markers for monitoring of and providing feedback on PA, paving the way for implementation and intervention. I will accomplish this through combining the complementary research fields of 1) behavioral intervention studies focusing on increasing PA in WCU (core competence University of British Columbia, UBC; outgoing phase) and 2) sensor-based PA monitoring (core competence Norwegian University of Science and Technology, NTNU; returning phase – consolidated by non-academic placement at Maastricht Instruments, which develop research prototypes including PA monitors). WHAM’s scientific aim is achieved through three objectives: 1) Measure the effect of a pragmatic exercise intervention trial on self-reported physical activity levels and cardio-respiratory fitness, 2) Develop valid algorithms for tracking PA markers in WCU, and 3) Co-create
a framework that outlines how PA can be conjointly monitored and provided feedback on in WCU. This fellowship will enable me to become established as an internationally recognized researcher in the field of “physical activity and disability”, while bringing together ongoing national disjointed research activities in this field. Altogether, my overall ambition is to contribute to reducing inequalities in daily-life participation among WCU compared to the rest of the population.

Topfinancing - WHeelchair Activity Monitoring project (WHAM)

Information theory is a discipline at the intersection of statistics, engineering and computer science. As the study of information quantities, such as compression or communication capacities, information content or measures of statistical dependency, it is one of the theoretical underpinnings of data science.

Computational problems in information theory are highly non-linear. The goal of this project is to transfer state-of-the-art methods of computational non-linear algebra to information theory, to study the inherent algebraic complexity of information-theoretical problems and to provide tools for solving them in practice. The algebraic point of view has proven to be fruitful in seemingly unrelated areas, as witnessed by a surge of recent work in algebraic statistics, in particular on likelihood geometry. However, maximizing the likelihood function is the same as minimizing relative entropy — a specific information quantity. Hence, this project also aims at generalizing the techniques developed in likelihood geometry.

One focus is on the practical computation of information quantities using numerical and differential algebraic geometry. Such quantities are defined via non-linear optimization problems and we aim to pinpoint the algebraic complexity of these problems in instances of general interest, such as common information measures. The final objective is finding fundamental laws and limits of data science imposed by non-linear inequalities constraining the entropic region. These inequalities provide, by duality, universal bounds for many of the optimization problems studied in information theory.

Algebraic Theory of Information Quantities

Hovedmålet med kreftbehandling er å eliminere kreftceller og dette er tradisjonelt oppnådd ved kirurgi, bruk av giftige medikamenter (cellegift) og stråling. En ny og betydningsfull tilnærming til kreftbehandling kalt immunterapi, har derimot fått mye oppmerksomhet det siste tiåret; Her forsøker leger og forskere å utnytte immunsystemet vårt for å målrettet  ødelegge kreftceller. En nøkkelaktør i denne banebrytende tilnærmingen er en gruppe «drapsmenn» i immunsystemet kjent som cytotoxiske T-lymfocytter (CTL-er). Disse cellene har en bemerkelsesverdig evne til å oppdage kreftceller ved å gjenkjenne unormale molekyler på overflaten av kreftcellene - molekyler som friske celler ikke har. Når CTL-er gjenkjenner kreftcellene ødelegger de dem ved å frigjøre giftige molekyler som initierer kreftcellenes selvdestruksjon. 
 
Selv om betydelige innsats har blitt dedikert til å forstå hvordan CTL-er aktiveres og hvordan de gjenkjenner kreftceller, vet vi mindre om de påfølgende hendelsene inne i kreftcellene som fører til deres død. Fra før vet vi at CTL-er kan initiere to forskjellige typer celledød i kreft: den første, kalt apoptose, er en stille og ordnet prosess der kreftcellene krymper og brytes opp uten å varsle immunsystemet; den andre, kalt pyroptose, er en mer dramatisk prosess som involverer dannelse av åpninger i cellemembranen, noe som fører til at cellene svulmer opp og sprekker. Under denne cellebristen blir innholdet inne i cellene frigitt i omgivelsene, og dette kan fungere som 'faretegn' som kan stimulere en sterkere immunrespons mot kreftcellene. Betydningen av denne cellebristen for å forsterke anti-tumorresponsene vil bli undersøkt i dette prosjektet. 
 
Videre er vi fascinert av muligheten for å avdekke ytterligere, ennå ukjente, former for celledød indusert av CTL-er. Utforsking av disse dødsrelaterte prosessene i kreftcellene kan potensielt øke effektiviteten av immunterapi og bidra betydelig i den pågående kampen mot kreft.

The primary goal of most cancer therapies is to induce cancer cell death. Immunotherapy relies on the cytotoxic activity of lymphocytes such as natural killer cells (NKs) and cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to achieve this. While a significant amount of research in immunotherapy focuses on the events within cytotoxic lymphocytes or at the interface between cytotoxic lymphocytes and cancer cells, less is known about the molecular mechanisms that orchestrate cancer cell death, particularly in the case of CTL-mediated death.
CTLs are known to induce two types of cell death in cancer: non-inflammatory apoptosis and proinflammatory pyroptosis. Pyroptotic cancer cells release proinflammatory signals that attract immune cells to the tumor site, thereby enhancing the anti-tumor response. Cell lysis is a common outcome of pyroptotic cell death. It is unclear whether lysis can be decoupled from pyroptosis in cancer cells and whether the proinflammatory properties of pyroptotic cancer cell death depend on lysis. Moreover, it remains unknown whether CTLs can induce other forms of cell death in cancer, apart from apoptosis and pyroptosis.
Studying the mechanisms of CTL-mediated cancer cell death is challenging because CTLs selectively target cells expressing specific antigens. However, given the critical role of CTLs in immunotherapy, it is essential to deepen our understanding of CTL-induced cancer cell death.
This project aims to develop novel methodologies to investigate the death mechanisms that are initiated by CTLs. In addition, we will identify new pathways and mediators involved in CTL-induced cancer cell death. Furthermore, we will assess the contribution of proinflammatory cell death and lysis in promoting anti-tumor responses in vivo. Overall, this research will improve our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms of CTL-mediated cancer cell death and potentially reveal novel targets to enhance the efficacy of cancer immunotherapy.

T-cell-mediated proinflammatory cell death and lysis in cancer

Sink er et essensielt mikronæringsstoff som kreves for funksjonen til hundrevis av proteiner involvert i et bredt spekter av biologiske prosesser. Etter inntak av sink fra kosten reguleres nivåene i kroppen nøye gjennom absorpsjon, sekresjon og ekskresjon via spesialiserte proteiner, såkalte sinktransportører, i tarmen. Enhver ubalanse er skadelig for menneskers helse, spesielt er tarmen følsom for sinkfluktuasjoner, hvilket påvirker tarmbarrieren og kan føre til inflammatoriske sykdommer og kreft i tarmen. 
På molekylært nivå er de presise mekanismene som styrer funksjonen til de ulike sinktransportørene fortsatt uklare. Hos mennesker finnes det over tjue slike proteiner, og de fleste inneholder områder rike på aminosyren histidin. Disse histidinene mistenkes å spille en avgjørende rolle i å binde sink. Nylig oppdaget vi et enzym som modifiserer disse områdene ved å sette metylgrupper på histidin, og viste at metylerte histidiner har en lavere affinitet for sink. Dette prosjektet har som mål å identifisere nye mekanismer som regulerer sinknivåer gjennom histidinmetylering av sinktransportører, å utvikle forskningsverktøy for effektiv studie av histidinmetylering, og å legge grunnlaget for nye behandlinger av tarmsykdommer.

The delicate balance of zinc levels in the body is essential for human health. Zinc is absorbed and excreted via intestinal zinc transporter proteins, and perturbations of this process are associated with pathologies, including inflammatory diseases and cancers of the bowel. The precise molecular mechanisms regulating zinc transport, however, remain a major knowledge gap. Based on the recent discovery of an enzyme methylating histidine residues in zinc transporters, and drawing on preliminary findings which demonstrate reduced affinity of methylated histidines to zinc, this project aims to identify novel mechanisms regulating zinc homeostasis through histidine methylation. We will examine the regulation and effect of histidine methylation on zinc transport in intestinal cell culture and organoids, and examine how knockout of the methylhistidine-generating enzyme affects the integrity and pathology of the intestinal tract in mouse models. In addition, we will identify reader proteins specifically recognizing methylhistidines and develop anti-methylhistidine antibodies and inhibitors to use as tools for detection, enrichment, and inhibition of histidine methylation. Such tools are urgently needed by the international research community, as none are currently available commercially. Overall, this project will lead to great advances in the field of protein regulation, and may uncover novel mechanisms in intestinal zinc transport and pathology.

Per- og polyfluorerte stoffer (PFAS) er en stor gruppe menneskeskapte kjemikalier med høyt fluorinnhold som antas å ha negative helseeffekter. Kilder til PFAS kan være produksjon av vann-, varme- og flekkbestandige produkter og disse kjemikaliene er en del av hverdagen vår. PFAS påvirkning av biologiske systemer er ikke fullstendig forstått. Noen PFAS er antatt å øke risikoen for å utvikling av ikke-alkoholisk fettleversykdom (NAFLD) og øke risikoen for diabetes. 

For å forstå hvordan PFAS påvirker organene våre ønsker vi å bruke små laboratoriedyrkede organmodeller, kalt organoider. Disse miniatyrorganene kan dyrkes fra menneskelige stamceller og tilbyr et kontrollert miljø for å studere hvordan PFAS påvirker f.eks lever og bukspyttkjertelen vår, uten bruk av dyreforsøk.

For å studere helseeffekter må vi kunne måle nivået av biomolekyler som fettstoffer i leveren og hormoner i bukspyttkjertelen. Til dette trenger vi å utvikle analytiske verktøy for å måle effektene. Først vil vi bekrefte at når leverorganoidene eksponeres for enkelte PFAS-forbindelser utvikles det NAFLD-lignende sykdom ved å sammenligne den biokjemiske profilen (proteiner og metabolitter) til organoider av lever med PFAS-eksponerte organoider. Deretter vil vi utvide den analytiske verktøykassen for å undersøke hvilke metabolske veier som påvirkes, og om effekten er den samme i NAFLD-induserte og PFAS-eksponerte organoider. Vi vil også eksponere insulinproduserende bukspyttkjertelorganoider for PFAS for å undersøke effekten av PFAS på hormonproduksjon. Når effektene av PFAS-eksponering på lever- og bukspyttkjertel-organoider er etablert, vil organoidene bli samkultivert i en chip, og effektene av PFAS-eksponering vil bli undersøkt og sammenlignet med individuelle organoider.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are believed to contribute to metabolic diseases, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 1 diabetes. HE-POP aims to investigate the effects of per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS), a type of POPs), on organ function in a controlled environment.

Organoids are multicellular laboratory-grown miniature organs, that are grown from stem cells. HE-POP will use organoids to examine how PFAS affects our organs and develop cutting-edge bioanalytical tools and methodology to measure these effects using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. HE-POP hypothesizes that PFAS negatively affects organ function, as evidenced by changes in hormone and lipid levels characteristic of NAFLD and type 1 diabetes. 

Organoids offer a controlled environment to study the effects of PFAS on the liver and pancreas, without the use of animal models. HE-POP aims to gain evidence of the negative effects of PFAS on organ function through controlled experiments on organoids and aid in understanding the biological mechanisms underlying NAFLD and type 1 diabetes.

HE-POP has fundaments in UN sustainable development goals, specifically #3, #12, and #14/15, seeking an understanding of diseases with worldwide prevalence, and understanding how POPs affect our life and surroundings and help enable the right regulatory actions and replacement chemicals.

HE-POP: Studying the Health Effects of Persistent Organic Pollutants, Using Mass Spectrometry, Organoids, and Organ-On-A-Chip

Norge har under Parisavtalen påtatt seg en forpliktelse til å redusere klimautslippene sine med minst 55 prosent innen 2030 sammenlignet med nivået i 1990. Hittil har vi kun oppnådd 5 prosent av dette målet; vi har følgelig kun syv år på å redusere de resterende 50 prosent for å imøtekomme målene. For 2050 har vi satt oss enda større mål: å redusere klimautslippene med hele 90 prosent. Bakgrunnen for målene er at vi prøver å unngå de verste scenarioene FNs klimautvalg skisserer opp i sine rapporter. I tillegg har energiforbruket økt, og prognosene fra Statnett for ulike scenarier viser at energiforbruket skal fortsette å øke. Vi trenger følgelig mer energi. Dette har bidrat til at diskusjoner rundt kjernekraft i Norge er høyaktuelle og pågående. Norsk Kjernekraft AS har blitt opprettet med formål om å bygge Norges første kjernekraftverk. I tillegg ble det i fjor også bevilget 200 millioner kroner fra Regjeringen til et nytt senter som skal drive med nukleær forskning. Målet er å styrke den norske kunnskapsberedskapen på det nukleære området. Dette betyr at vi beveger oss i en retning hvor kjernekraft en dag kan bli aktuelt i Norge, og noen mener at dette er den eneste veien å gå hvis vi skal nå målene våre for 2050. Men i dag sitter vi med flere spørsmål enn svar, blant annet: Hvilken teknologi og leverandør burde vi velge? Er regelverket for snevert og strengt? Hvordan kan dette gjøres og samtidig ivareta sikkerhet? Hvordan tjener et kjernekraftverk penger?

Dette prosjektet skal svare på samtlige av disse spørsmålene i en detaljert og omfattende analyse. Her bruker vi grunnlagsdata til å vurdere dagens forskning opp mot hvordan industrien i andre land opererer, og ut ifra dette forsøke estimere hva risikoen knyttet til å bygge kjernekraft som industri i Norge er. Prosjektet sikter på å gi et så helhetlig bilde som mulig slik at vi kan gjøre oss opp en mening basert på fakta; om kjernekraft passer inn i miksen av det som utgjør norsk energi.

Denne prosjektbeskrivelsen skisserer forskningen Vala Maria Valsdottir (omtales herunder som stipendiaten) skal utføre innenfor sin doktorgradsavhandling. Prosjektet skal være en del av Senter for nukleær forskning (SNF) som fikk midler vinteren 2023.
Ph.d.-prosjektet er initiert av Inmeta Consulting AS, som igjennom denne ph.d.-stillingen vil bli en del av SNF. Inmeta planlegger en prosjektperiode på fire år, hvor stipendiaten arbeider 75 % med ph.d.-prosjektet og 25 % med vanlig virksomhet hos Inmeta. 
Prosjektet skal undersøke muligheten for kjernekraft som industri i Norge. Dette er både en samfunnsaktuell problemstilling samt en som medlemmene i SNF er interessert i å utforske. Stipendiaten kommer derfor til å samarbeide med alle aktørene som er involvert i senteret og benytte forskningsdata fra dem. Dette gjelder da spesielt Institutt for energiteknikk (IFE) som har mest grunnlagsdata som er relevant for dette prosjektet.
Kandidaten ferdigstilte en masteroppgave høsten 2020 i kjernefysikk på Universitetet i Oslo (UiO) og har derfor gode og relevante grunnkunnskaper for å ta på seg et slikt prosjekt. I tillegg har kandidaten tre års erfaring innenfor energibransjen, og er derfor oppdatert på industrien og forstår deres problemstillinger godt.

Er kjernekraft aktuelt for Norge?

Potetskrell, et biprodukt fra industriproduksjon av potet (pommes frites, flak, chips mm.) er en råstoff ressurs som kan bli bedre utnyttet til nye formål. Skrellet er nemlig en rik kilde på antioksidanter, stoffer som planter naturlig har i seg for å beskytte mot skadelige UV-stråler og reaktive forbindelser som oksygen radikaler. Antioksidanter behøver vi også å tilsette i matvarer for å beskytte og ta vare på umettet fett så det ikke blir harskt og vondt i kontakt med luft. I dag brukes flere ulike syntetiske stoffer i matvarer for å hindre oksidasjon av fett og oljer. Men det er reist bekymring rundt sikkerheten for bruken av dem. Matvareindustrien, myndigheter og forbruker ønsker derfor å fjerne flere syntetiske antioksidanter og erstatte dem med naturlig alternativer. Det er imidlertid svært få slike produkter som er godkjent og tilgjengelig på markedet. Prosjektet Peel Preserve, som har et klart bærekraft mål, skal vise om et uttrekk av antioksidanter laget på industrielt potetskrell råstoff kan fungere som konserveringsmiddel og erstatte noen av de stoffene som brukes i dag. Tre næringsmiddelbedrifter skal teste potetskrell-ekstraktet i noen av sine produkter og utføre både interne og eksterne analyser på effekten. Men en viktig forutsetning for at potetantioksidant kan tas i bruk som nytt tilsetningsstoff i mat er at det blir godkjent av den Europeiske matsikkerhets myndigheten (EFSA) og gitt et E-nummer. Prosjektet skal igangsette denne lengre flertrinns godkjennings prosessen. Parallelt skal det utvikles en forretningsmodell og nødvendig beskyttelse rundt teknologien. Dersom industrien etter testingen av potetantioksidanten, vurderer denne som er god erstatning til konkurransedyktig pris, og en EFSA-godkjenning kan oppnås på sikt, åpner det for å kommersialisere et naturlig plante-basert produkt til beste for forbruker og for miljøet. Bak prosjektet Peel Preserve står Høgskolen i Innlandet i samarbeid med Nofima og Klosser Innovasjon.

Preserving foods with potato peels: Industry-relevant validation and first regulatory assessment of a new natural antioxidant

InART is recognized as one of the main conference series in the field of Heritage Science and since its first edition in 2013 (Evora, Portugal) it mainly focused on the contribution of natural sciences to the field. A major change occurred after the COVID-19 pandemic, when a greater number of researchers from different branches of heritage science participated in InART 2022 (Paris, France). 
InART is an open platform for knowledge-sharing among professionals in the field of Heritage Science, including conservation.
These aspects are covered by the main conference topics:
•	Development of new tools (devices, technology, software, etc.), advanced data analysis and FAIR data management
•	Development and/or implementation of new methods and routines (diagnostic and conservation) for the understanding of heritage materials, techniques, and degradation processes (chemical, physical and biological)
•	Development, testing (includes mechanical testing), and characterization of new materials for conservation (special attention to green conservation treatments)
•	Application of non-invasive/non-destructive techniques
•	Preventive conservation: environmental monitoring techniques and climate/microclimate effects on the conservation of heritage sites and exposed objects.

Heritage science is a highly multidisciplinary research field. Consequently, topics covered during the InArt2024 conference can be approached from different points of view and the conference aims to merge natural sciences and conservation, providing a dynamic space for active interaction, scientific exchange, and debates on the central issues of heritage science research. InART2024 welcomes contributors from diverse fields to join and create an interdisciplinary discussion about cultural heritage conservation within the fields of archaeological objects, artworks, built heritage, etc.

The approach is to collect the available FET data from the Commission and refine the framework of key performance indicators such as the number of resulting academic papers (and their impact factor), SME spinouts, technology licensing deals and patent app lications / granted patents. These will be performed by Drs. Ian McKay and Dmitrii Rodionov with two powerful Network Analysis Tools, CoreMine and NPA (see the description of their qualifications and access to the appropriate tools below). Further, the Co nsortium?s experts will use our proprietary Project Assessment Matrix and TRL Mapping Tool in their respective areas of expertise to perform a systematic technology assessment of the collected data.

FET Impact: accessing the direct and indirect impacts of the FET program

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are protective molecules produced by all living organisms, and are present particularly at the epithelial surfaces of the host that are exposed to the external environment. They are key components of the innate immune system  and fish rely on them for protection from pathogenic microbes. The study of these molecules in farmed fish is imperative for finding an alternative to the use of antibiotics for controlling diseases. In the proposed project, I intend to examine selected a ntimicrobial proteins including L-amino acid oxidase (LAO) in cold water fish, particularly Atlantic cod and Atlantic salmon. LAO is an enzyme found in a wide range of species, from microorganisms to humans. The host team in Norway (Aquatic Animal Health  Research Group, University of Nordland) has adequate expertise in AMPs, and has been conducting research on piscidin. Therefore, if a scholarship is made available, I could acquire new knowledge in this field and contribute to the RCN funded research proj ect on Mucosal Immune System of Atlantic Cod at the host institution.

Mucosal antibacterial proteins of cold water fish: Discovering molecules involved 
in disease resistance

Although the theory of deliberative democracy suggests that deliberation among the citizens could improve the quality of democracy making it more legitimate, rarely the question of legitimacy was directly approached within the research on deliberative are nas of citizens. In fact, most of deliberative practices has been implemented assuming that legitimacy derives from the process of deliberation no matter how the process was implemented and what kind of dynamics took place within the deliberative arena. 
 This research aims to approach the question of legitimacy of deliberative citizens arenas in Europe, by analyzing the case of EuroPolis - EU Deliberative Poll held in Brussels in 2009. 
The main part of my research activity will be devoted to the analyses  and interpretation of the unique data produced during the previous collaboration with ARENA research staff within a framework of EuroPolis project.
The analyses of the data will allow me to answer the following research questions:
1. Can the selected sam ple of European citizens be representative of the EU polity, and thus produce legitimate decisions after participation in deliberative process?
The inclusiveness of the polity in deliberation on political decisions creates the basis of legitimate decision s. As the EU lacks the typical polity that are held to be constitutive of nation-states we need to asses if the participants selected to participate in deliberative process can develop the sense of belonging to EU Polity.
2. Does the perceived legitimacy  of demands and counterarguments expressed by other (different nationality) participants increases after the participation in deliberative arenas?
The second research question is related to the perceived legitimacy of demands and counterarguments of other  EU citizens who participate in deliberation. As it is the case of classic representative democratic institution, demands in order to be legitimate should be considered as such by those who participate.

Deliberative Citizens Arenas in Europe: Questions of Democratic Legitimacy

The "Jómsvikings - tradition and history" project has been established to renew research on Jómsvikinga saga and the whole tradition that lies behind the narrative. The projects focus on saga itself and on all potential features, decisive for rise and sha pe of the legend, the saga is part of. It gathers various specialists: historians, historians of literature, linguistics and archeologists. Their common work within the project should reveal fully diversity and complexity of the legend of Jómsvikings and  Jomsborg and its numerous, literary, historical, social and political, contexts.
My part of the project is first, to translate Jómsvikinga saga into Polish, second, to do research on various historical features that would have influenced creation and char acter of the saga.
Translation of the saga will be based on redaction preserved in manuscript AM 291 4to and will be the first ever Polish edition of Jómsvikinga saga. Thus it will be available for both academics and general reader, more and more interest ed in Icelandic sagas and history of the North, especially the Vikings. Importantly, it can happen in full association with new kind of interdisciplinary studies of the whole legend, that have just been established.
My future research within the project w ill elaborate deeper the question of potential influence of political affairs in Scandinavia in 12th century on development of the saga. I will pay special attention to following topics: Danish activity in Slavic territories, military and political encoun ters with Pomeranian and Polish rulers, royal power and royal court in Scandinavia. In effect, I hope to show that Jómsvikinga saga reflex political situation in the North in 12th century.
My one month stay in Oslo would be sufficient part of my work. The  university library would secure full access to subject literature. Stay in Oslo would also enable me contact with specialist in history of medieval North and Old Norse literature.

Jómsvikings - History and Tradition

The project aims to analyse and discuss possible effects of climate change on ski resorts and winter tourism in Norway. The three major phases are, first, to determine the physical vulnerability of the resorts, secondly, to reveal the reactive behaviour o f the winter tourism market demand within and to Norway, and finally, to understand and to question perceptions and measures of the winter tourism suppliers. For this purpose, snow reliability analyses for the resorts are initially carried on. Then the ph ysical implications will be tested against tourist behaviour in order to find out the level of demand orientation to the change. In the final run, conclusions from the first two analyses will be gathered to come up with an investigative forum for the majo r actors of supply on the private and public arenas. Overall, all the findings from the three phases will be linked to the literature and each other, and organized under a SWOT analysis and processed through a TOWS matrix to formulate recommendations.

Effects of climate change on Norwegian ski resorts and winter tourism

Since 2006, the Contemporary Art Group in the Research Department of the French Museum Conservation and Research Center has been working on the phenomena of technological obsolescence. The purpose of this program is to study the impact of technological ev olution on contemporary art and, more specifically, on its preservation. More concretely, the program deals principally with media installations, which include analogue or digital audiovisual elements, in contemporary art collections. Many of these images  are now conserved on obsolete devices and formats. The works? accessibility is threatened, as is their preservation. The projects made actually by the contemporary art group are about film digitization. With the technological obsolescence of film it beco mes increasingly difficult to edit copies in formats other than 16 or 35 mm and, consequently, to show and exhibit certain art films. As a result, curators of avant-garde and experimental cinema have to deal with digitization for exhibition, distribution,  and even for conservation. Our main research is about consequences of the technological transfers imposed by obsolescence: the preservation of visual effects, color and temporal like flicker in particular, because some visual effects are not well reprodu ced in digital format. The goal is to evaluate differences between a film and it digital version (depending of the parameters of the digitization and the different projections techniques), and to provide recommendations to minimize them. The step after th is work is to study digital film restoration, because film copies are often damaged and direct film restoration is very difficult. Once the film is digitized, digital restoration is possible as computer based research is without danger for the original fi lms. The stay of two month in the The Norwegian Color Research Laboratory will permit to exchange knowledge about film digitizations and will help my work about film restoration as I am new to this subject.

Digital film digitization and restoration

Current climate change is having impacts across trophic chains and the interactions among parasites and their hosts are likely to be affected as well. In addition, the rate of temperature rise is not spatially coherent and this provides a good opportunity  to study the spatial nature of the host-parasite interactions under locally characteristic climate change settings. In this project I use a brood parasitic bird, the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus), as a model species to investigate both temporal (coveri ng a time span of ca 150 years) and spatial (covering the entire Europe) variation in its reproductive phenology in a variety of its avian hosts. I will draw on a unique collaborative dataset of all known cases (over 30 000 records) of Cuckoo parasitism i n Europe. The outcome of this collaborative project with Norwegian and French partners would be a detailed analysis of the role of climate variability on timing of the parasite's breeding season and an evaluation of the hypothesis that reproductive isolat ion by different Cuckoo gentes might be facilitated by timing of the hosts breeding seasons. These results would represent an important contribution to our understanding of host-parasite interactions under the ongoing climate change.

Climatic variability and latitudinal patterns in breeding phenology of an obligate brood parasite

Factors determining where and how far an animal is going to move entail both intrinsic variables (such as, diet, age, and reproductive status) and external cues (e.g. climate, resource availability, predation risk), and their effect will be reflected at a ll spatial scales, from individual steps to annual home ranges. Understanding how animals respond to spatio-temporal variability in external conditions is imperative in order to anticipate the consequences of future changes in climate, land use, and speci es management. The aim of this project is, therefore, to use GPS data to examine movement behavior and habitat use of different mountain ungulates so as to improve our knowledge about the functional relationships between animals and their environment. Fir st, we will focus on three ruminant species inhabiting in the French Alps and will study the effect of their feeding style and social organization relative to other intrinsic and extrinsic variables on their spatial ecology. We will compare a solitary bro wser species (Roe Deer), a highly aggregated grazer (Mouflon), and intermediately aggregated mixed feeder (Chamois). Specifically we will determine which factors are causing the changes in the movement behavior (i.e. trajectory) of each species, and after wards, we will scale up to test if the same mechanisms are also explaining the intra and inter-specific variability at the home range level. Finally, we will investigate if the mechanistic relationships obtained in previous objectives can be generalized t o other mountain systems, by comparing the mixed feeder of the alpine area to another in an arctic area, that is, reindeer in Norway. Projects like this considering multiple species and systems are necessary to improve our understanding about mechanisms d riving species spatial behaviour, and thus, to make better predictions of how animals will respond to future alterations in climate and resource availability resulting from ongoing global changes.

From movement behaviour to space use in mountain ungulates

Recent studies at the Arkeologisk museum Universitetet i Stavanger (AmUiS) have shown that the datings of archaeological finds at the museum have sometimes been misinterpreted in earlier times. While the museum catalogue suggested only one time period for  certain finds - such as grave mounds, for instance - it turned out that in fact more periods were involved. This suggests evidence of monument re-use, a burial custom that has been a subject of research over the last two decades in Britain: People in the  Viking Age re-used ancient monuments in order to define their identities through their ancestors. This was done for claiming land rights but also for religious reasons. Research on re-use also involves artefacts (such as, for instance, Stone-Age tools in  Viking-Age graves); but archaeologists interpret the deposition of ancient artefacts in graves rather in terms of superstition. 

A discussion with museum staff resulted in the agreement that many more cases of monument and artefact re-use are to be expe cted in the museum archive and need to be recovered. A re-evaluation of these finds is important because it will shed more light on one of the historically crucial periods in Rogaland, the Viking Age. Additionally, a correction of these errors, make furth er significant research possible that is based on objects from the archive. The proposed project is a pilot project; similar research has not been conducted at the AmUiS before. Related projects will follow and serve as a model for other museums.

Lost in the archive: Viking Age monument and artefact re-use and the re-interpretation of old finds at the Arch. museum Univ. of Stavanger

In formal semantics, the meaning of a sentence is its truth-conditions. But that is not uncontroversial. There is a vast recent literature on what could be called the underdeterminacy thesis, which basically says that meaning underdetermines truth-conditi ons. And there are individual areas of research that take the idea of underdeterminacy seriously and investigate aspects of meaning that go beyond truth-conditions (witness cognitive pragmatics, and particularly relevance theory, or the more philosophical  approach branded truth-conditional pragmatics). I think that vague expressions raise a series of problems to the truth-conditional theory of meaning and it is the purpose of my research to investigate how serious these initial intuitions are and what kin d of theoretical reconsiderations would they require. It is my conviction that a theory of vagueness and of how vague expressions are interpreted should make justice to language use and actual reasoning practices.
The main aim of my proposed research proj ect is to offer a language use informed account of vagueness and to evaluate its significance for a general semantic-pragmatic theory. The idea is to bring insights from semantics and pragmatics, and general cognitive science, into the philosophical discu ssion about vagueness. Two directions are followed: first, how vagueness and the way we interpret vague expressions interact with reasoning; and second, what reconsiderations regarding the semantic-pragmatic framework are required in order to accommodate  vagueness and its specificities. Under the first direction, a novel approach to the Sorites is offered, and an understanding of borderline cases that goes beyond truth-values is proposed. Under the second one, issues like the role of context and (pragmati c) reasoning in interpretation, cognitive vs. formal aspects of meaning, compositionality, contextualism and relativism are discussed with regard to vague expressions.

Meaning Beyond Truth-Conditions: From Vagueness to Linguistic Interpretation

To assess the ultimate strength of ships/ocean structures, it is important to estimate time-series distributions of pressure acting on the structures accurately. The structures are sometimes subjected to large wave impact loads under severe sea conditions  arising from nonlinear wave/structure interactions such as slamming. In terms of design, quantitative evaluations of the wave impact loadings are needed because the loads may severely damage structural members. The fluid-structure interaction and elastic /elastoplastic bucking of the structures must be considered in modeling such phenomena. In recent years, particle-based methods have been adopted in science and engineering. A fluid motion is represented by Lagrangian formulation with particles, and grids  or meshes are not needed in the computation. Taking this approach, it is relatively easy to treat free surfaces and moving discontinuities and it is possible to solve violent free-surface problems such as water breaking and splashing and the fragmentatio n of waves. The purpose of the project is to develop a simulation model and numerical code to solve fluid-structure interaction behaviors, which are used to evaluate wave impact loads, employing a particle-based approach. The structure is modeled employin g the finite element method (FEM), and the fluid is modeled employing a particle-based method. The two methods are coupled to solve the fluid-structure interaction problem. A simulation model considering elastic/elastoplastic bucking of the structures is  developed on the basis of recent developments in particle-based approaches and fluid-structure interaction analyses. The numerical code is implemented and numerical experiments are performed to verify the proposed approach. Analysis of ships/ocean structu res is presented as a practical application.

A numerical study to evaluate wave impact loads acting on ships/ocean structures employing a particle-based approach

This project must be situated in the area of pseudo-Riemannian differential geometry. It involves the development and application of algebro-geometric techniques for the invariant characterization (IC) and classification of Lorentzian spaces of general di mension n. The focus will be on those spaces with an algebraically special Weyl tensor; explicit work-outs for the n=5 and n=6 cases will serve as illustrations for the general concepts. 

In a first subproject a procedure is set up to find canonical form s of  the Weyl tensor. This is one of the crucial ingredients in the initial step of the Cartan-Karlhede IC algorithm, which takes the entries of the Riemann tensor derivative components w.r.t. a maximally fixed frame as the space-time characterizing quan tities.
 
In a second subproject, the notion of invariant factors of a linear operator on a vector space is exploited in the context of curvature operators. They are used to discriminate Weyl alignment types II and D, which the scalar curvature invariants  (SCIs) fail to do. Specific Weyl operators will also be studied; the relationship of their eigenvectors with multiple Weyl aligned null directions (WANDs), and their potential to algorithmically deduce the latter,  will be investigated. 

Thirdly, a gene ralization of the proof of the SCI result for n=4 to n=5 is aimed, based on a case by case study. This result states that the only metrics which are not fully determined by their SCIs up to some discrete transformation necessarily belong to the degenerate  Kundt class of metrics. The invariant factors will be utilized to partition this special class.  

Finally, type III and D Einstein spaces exhibiting the most degenerate so-called spin types will be invariantly classified. In the type D case, the compati bility of a double WANDs manifold of dimension n-3 will be checked; if the answer is negative then an example with an almost maximally degenerate Ricci tensor will be constructed.

Invariant characterization and classification of Lorentzian geometries

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in University of Oslo is a leading centre of polar research. The main purpose of planned departure is to gain new knowledge concerning response of glaciers to the observed climate change.

Small glaciers are  sensitive climate indicators. In the Arctic glacial systems clearly response to temperature rise, which leads to intensification of melting, and consequently to rapid ice-cover decay. The largest island of Svalbard - Spitsbergen, norwegian Arctic - is pa rticularly subjected to the effects of climate change. The interior zone of Spitsbergen is charecterized by the lowest precipitation and highest summer temperatures, what results in high mass deficit and, consequently, in significant glacier wastage.

Poo rly glaciated parts of central Spitsbergen (including Dickson Land - the most isolated from maritime influence) represent large portion of its glaciers, but no glaciological investigations are performed there. Actual state of local ice-masses is therefore  unknown. This project aims to research functioning of Dickson Land glaciers and their response to 20th century climate change. The studies include mass balance modelling, geometry changes, thermal structure evolution, dynamics and hydrology. The project  follows the newest trends of glaciological research (modern methods including georadar and remote sensing data analysis) and will bring new data about functioning of glaciares in dry climate type of Spitsbergen.

Dickson Land Ice Masses Evolution (DIL*ICE)

The research project is based on the assumption that resistance and heroic narratives within the Danish and Norwegian society have triggered transnational memory conflicts after 1945. Over decades, their national culture of memory (Erinnerungskultur) were  determined by the traumatic experience of occupation. In contrast to previous historical memory studies that have been mostly confined to discourse approach and abstract models of consensus narratives, this project is based on an actor-centred approach.  It focuses on the associations of former political prisoners who have greatly influenced the remembrance discourse in their role as guardians and defenders of mythological charged and politically exploited resistance narratives in the two Scandinavian cou ntries. By choosing a transnational comparative approach, the study examines the contribution of these organisations to bilateral respective multilateral cooperation and division. The goal is to present and explain the periodic progress as well as the con sequences of dominance and weakness of resistance narratives in the Scandinavian post-war societies.

Resistance narrative - Trigger of transnational memory conflicts?

The proposed joint project between Alexander Chernokulsky and The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center aims to improve understanding of climate on regional scale particularly in Arctic region. More specifically, the project addresses cloud cover  variability over Arctic in its dependence on essential climate variables such as surface temperature, atmospheric stability and ice fraction by using in situ and remote sensing observations as well as model simulations. We aim to understand the role of t he atmospheric stability, ice fraction, surface temperature and meridional heat and moisture flux variability in cloudiness and radiative characteristics over last decades. Geographically, the primary attention will be given to Svalbard, Barents and Beauf ort Seas where the major changes have been observed. The understanding will be built up through comparison of the cloud-temperature-ice feedbacks during periods of warming and cooling. The proposed project will take three months and include 5 stages. Firs t stage constitutes of a start up phase and data collection, the main activity of this stage is preparing data for further analysis. Next stage is focused on compilation of cloudiness climatology and statistical analysis of its variability. The third one  is aimed to study the dynamical mechanisms on local scales, in particular to search for correlations between the cloudiness and the atmospheric static stability. Fourth stage is aimed to study the dynamical mechanisms on large scales, in particular to sea rch for correlations between cloudiness and cyclonic activity. Fifth stage wraps up the project. The main activity is focused on the work on conclusions. The culprit of this stage is a preparation and submission of an article to a peer-review climate jour nal. The project aims for further collaboration, especially as concerned the analyses of cloud parameterization in single-column model and development of a cloud module for the turbulence-resolving model.

Observed Arctic cloudiness in its dependence on essential climate variables

This project is a bilateral research collaboration between Professors Arne Lokketangen from the Department of Informatics of Molde University, Norway, and Ricardo Camargo from the Department of Industrial Engineering of the Federal University of Minas Ger ais, Brazil. It has the objective of developing mathematical models and solution algorithms for many-to-many location-routing problem, specially under a matheuristic perspective.

Matheuristics are algorithms where an inter-operation of heuristics and mat hematical programming techniques is coordinated. The combination can be done by using mathematical programming methods to
improve heuristics or, the other way around, utilizing heuristics to speedup exact methods. Matheuristic algorithms exploit the featu res of the underlined mathematical model of the problem in order to short the resolution time. Although matheuristics are a recent topic, they are attracting an increasing number of researches due their effectiveness and efficiency.

More specifically, th e objective is to combine the best features of heuristic algorithms, i.e. to find a good solution in a short time, and exact methods or mathematical programming techniques, i.e. to assess the quality of the attained solution, under a matheuristic approach . 

This bilateral project is an opportunity for contributing to the design of the many-to-many distribution systems as well as to the matheuristic research field. Professor Arne Lokketangen is a renowned specialist in vehicle routing problems solved by h euristic algorithms, while Ricardo Camargo has addressed hub location problems by Benders decomposition, a classical mathematical programming method.

Many-to-many location-routing problem: a matheuristic approach

Understanding the effects of human activities on wildlife is challenging for large carnivores. During my PhD I studied effects of human activities on the behavior of brown bears, which showed fine-scale behavioral responses to human activities. Now I am l eading a project to compare bear behavior in protected and non-protected areas of Spain, where bears are in risk of extinction. For the last 10 years bears are not allowed to be radio-tracked in Spain, so it is not possible to obtain fine-scale informatio n on bear habitat use, i.e. limiting the scope of my research. In contrast, the Scandinavian bear population and the Scandinavian Brown Bear Research Project (SBBRP) offer excellent data to explore the effects of human activities on bear behavior and to h elp learn how to conserve large carnivore populations in human-dominated landscapes. There are ~3000 bears in Scandinavia and the SBBRP has radio-collared and tracked > 600 bears since 1984. 
My proposal includes research objectives in cooperation with th e SBBRP, which will provide knowledge applicable at the European scale, because many bear populations face similar conservation and management problems.

Norwegian-Spanish cooperation to study human disturbance on brown bears. Applications for the conservation and management of bears in Europe

Satellite radar systems have an important ability to observe the earth's surface, independently from cloud and light condition, which is very useful in Arctic during polar night and severe weather condition. For navigation support, industrial activities o n the shelf and other operations in the ice covered seas, it is necessary to give the operational information in the convenient form for users - ice charts.
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images are used for sea ice classification. For fast and objective  reconstruction of sea ice types from SAR images it is necessary to develop methods of automated processing and classification.
In this project we aim at using a multilayer feed forward Neural Network (NN) algorithm for the Barents Sea and Fram Strait area . The algorithm uses backscatter and extracted SAR image texture features in order to identify several sea ice classes. To develop the NN algorithms for automatic derivation of the main sea ice parameters (ice type and concentration) we used ice visual in terpretation of SAR image by ice experts, for training. The optimal neural network's architecture is determined by using a set of textural characteristics for a predefined number of classes (sea ice types and sea ice/open water). The additional informatio n from AMSR-E is used for automated distinguishing of sea ice and open water. The opportunity to extend the number of sea ice classes by using the Alternating Polarization Mode data will also be investigated. The classification results are validated using  ground truth data from field observations and ice charts produced by experts.

Sea Ice Classification using Synthetic Aperture Radar data

The goal of this project is to study the propagation of high energy cosmic ray (CR) nuclei accelerated by Galactic sources, answering the question up to which energy the CR flux at Earth from Galactic sources is still isotropic. Most previous works studyi ng the anisotropy of the CR flux below $10^{19}$ eV used diffusion equations. While this approach is well justified in the fully diffusive regime below energies $\sim Z\times 10^{15}$ eV for nuclei of charge $Z$, it starts to fail at higher energies. On t he other hand, the direct calculation of individual CR trajectories down to energies $\sim Z\times 10^{15}$ eV has become viable, though still demanding, with modern computer power. One of the main improvements in the proposed project compared to earlier  works is the use of individual CR trajectories instead of the diffusion approximation. A second major improvement will be the use of recent, more detailed models for the GMF especially for the local neighbourhood of the Sun. As result, we expect to derive  reliable upper limits for the Galactic contribution to the overall CR flux as function of energy and the Galactic magnetic field model parameters. In particular, these results may exclude models suggesting a mixed composition. Constraining the compositio n would also be extremely helpful for understanding better the discrepancies between different CR experiments and predictions from QCD models.

Studying cosmic ray propagation in the Galactic magnetic field

My PhD aims to compare and contrast Norway and Scotland -- two North Sea neighbours with very different approaches to land ownership and - as a result -- two very different traditions of second home ownership and use.
Norway has one of the highest rates o f second home ownership in the Northern Hemisphere -- Scotland has one of the lowest. 
My thesis is that different systems of land ownership and local democracy in the two nations explain their differing experiences of second home ownership -- and that th ese underlying aspects of democracy have been under-estimated in existing Norwegian second home research which focuses on technical triggers like the advent of holidays with pay and the de-rationing of cars in post war Norway.
In Scotland research focuses  almost entirely on the negative impact second homes currently have on the housing market for local people. 
I would like to focus on the origins of huts in both countries -- in particular on the inter war period when working people from both nations trie d to escape the pressure and squalour of urbanisation by building basic huts around cities.
The modest huts around cities like Oslo in the 1920s appear to have blossomed into a mainstream national cabin culture in Norway whilst similar efforts by Scots ar ound Glasgow were surrounded by difficulty, lack of rights, and finally eviction.
I plan to compare two sets of hutters active in both countries at roughly the same time. The first are urban working class inter-war hutters in the islands off Oslo and the  Carbeth hutters from Clydebank in Glasgow. The second set are rural peasant hutters in the Arctic province of Finnmark and the Scottish Borders village of Rascarrel.

The inter-war origins of the Norwegian hytte - a permanent home in nature

Entry of sea waves into narrow bays, such as fjords, and river mouths usually leads to an intensification of wave regimes, which is well-known by various photos of tidal and tsunami bores. For certain bathymetry configurations the wave can propagate witho ut internal reflection even in the cases, when the depth varies strongly along the wave path. With an application to a tsunami problem it means that destructive tsunami wave can propagate over large distances without reflection and transfers all its energ y to the coast that leads to an abnormal wave amplification and runup. 
The central aim of this project is to develop the analytical theory of long wave runup in fjords focusing on situations of abnormal wave amplification and runup (the worst case scenar io). 
For this purpose I will (i) find rigorous and approximated solutions of wave runup in U-shaped bays with analytically determined longitudinal profiles and study the dependence of runup height on bathymetry variations; (ii) develop analytical dissipa tive model of wave runup by considering a variable dissipation, which may approximate dissipation caused by wave breaking and bottom friction; (iii) apply the developed model to experimental data of ship wave runup in Tallinn Bay, Baltic Sea. 
In order to  find rigorous analytical solutions of nonlinear shallow water theory in 1D and 2D cases as well, a number of methods of nonlinear wave physics and mathematical physics will be used. 
The outcome of this research will be the new analytical formulas for wa ve runup, which can be applied to hazard assessment of water waves in fjords. For example, it may explain the 2009 tsunami event in American Samoa, where the maximum runup height reached 17.6 m in the village of Poloa and the inundation reached an impress ive 500 m along the bed of the Leafu River. The results of the project can also be applied to forecast and mitigation of marine natural hazards in Norway.
