Human-centered development of systems engineering in Norwegian Engineering Industries

Awarded: NOK 0.80 mill.

As the solo institution member of NCE SE, NISE is seeking opportunities to promote innovation capability development in Norwegian engineering industries by collaborating with international research pioneers. Stanford University, a top ranking university in the US, is the initiator of the engineering design related research and education and the Center of Design Research remains the leader in the filed today. This project as a means for an access by "walking-in" to world-class design research capabilities will open up the multidisciplinary R&D opportunities in systems engineering; the knowledge diffusion resulted from it would benefit other multidisciplinary based innovation research in Norway. It has been a hot debate regarding the paradox between complexity and innovation both in academia and industry. The swirl entry of "complexity" in product developments due to the industrial decentralization and globalization shows it is yet to be resolved. This project attempts to remedy the complexity of human aspect where subjective interactions and perceptions are taken place (e.g. stakeholder management) throughout the product development process, and thus help productivity and further value creations in Norwegian engineering firms where systems engineering is usually outlined. The close collaborations with industries will act as an anchor for NCE's overall strategy in this project. Furthermore, the seeking R&D agenda is to broaden and deepen the aspect of design-inspired methods in managing the complexity in the social-technical engineering systems. An extended application of design-inspired methods will also be resulted beyond the current fuzzy front-end focus. The knowledge dissemination in higher-education will be realized through a further leveraging with NTNU Trolllab leaded by Prof. Martin Steinert (the former Stanford Prof.). The consortium in this regard has been formed with Stanford, NTNU and industries, referring to the our SFI submission.
