Online Distributed Integrity Monitoring System (ODIMS) for Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)

Alternative title: Online Distribuert Integritets MonitoreringsSystem (ODIMS)for Korrosjon Under Isolasjon (KUI)

Awarded: NOK 10.0 mill.

The drive towards lifetime extension of ageing oil and gas infrastructure on the Norwegian Continental Shelf represents an enormous challenge. In this project, NORCE are developing the Online Distributed Integrity monitoring system (ODIMS). The technology will enable operators to carry out targeted inspection and preventative maintenance. Industry data suggests that enormous sums of money can be saved by making maintenance programs smarter. The technology will reduce the risk for production shutdowns and accidents. The technology has the potential to be applied in a wide range of other settings. The early focus of the project was to develop measurement technology allowing for high accuracy, high spatial resolution measurements of humidity over extreme lengths, using a few centrally located readout units. As the project progressed, the development focus has shifted towards technology that is more suitable for installation over shorter sections spread across different locations within large infrastructure, and has the ability to transfer data wirelessly. Three 1000 hours tests under field like conditions have been completed. Several different cable prototypes designs are now being produced and tested together with a readout united for the wireless architecture. We believe this architecture has significant commercial potential.

The project has developed distributed water ingress technology that will enable actors within the process /oil and gas indsutry to carry out more effective targeted corrosion-under-insulation (CUI) inspection.

Imagine the possibilities if you are able to accurately measure an array of chemical parameters in a distributed way over huge lengths/areas. Through this project, we will develop a groundbreaking technology platform with huge potential enabling exactly this. While current CUI maintenance strategies revolve around fixed time periods and subjective judgment, ODIMS will enable new strategies with decision making based on detailed objective and accurate information. ODIMS will transform the value chain by vastly reducing the need for CUI inspection and maintenance. The following features/properties makes ODIMS unique: -Multi parameter corrosion indicator measurement system: temperature, humidity, water, salinity -Truly distributed sensing (<10cm spatial resolution) over kilometre length scales -Simple integration of additional point sensors -Online/time continuous monitoring with decision support and feedback/calibrations functionality
