The microbial methane filter in the Arctic: resilience and response to climate change

Awarded: NOK 73,999

The overall goal of the project is to investigate the impact of climate change on the methane oxidation potential in High- and in the Sub-Arctic terrestrial ecosystems. We want to identify the key players in the microbial methane cycle and their adaption to their habitat. We will address the influence of vegetation, temperature, different methane concentrations and different organic substrates on the microbial communities, using samples from Svalbard (Solvatn, Ny-Ålesund), Siberia and Northern Norway.
