Scalable Supercapacitor Technology

Awarded: NOK 39,999

The main objective of this proposal is to build-up a manufacturing platform of supercapacitors based on nanoparticles that can be industrially scalable. The main technology that will be used is the electrospray of nanofluids containing in suspension the nanoparticles. The electrospray technique has already shown its potential for producing fine aerosol of liquids and to create core-shell drops of immiscible liquids. It has recently been demonstrated that the technique has a great potential in achieving deposition of nanoparticles on top of substrates. Depending on the experimental conditions of the deposit, full 3D order of self-assembled layers can be produced in a short time. Compared to the competing techniques, based on capillary forces, the electrospray is faster, achieves from thin to thick layers of nanoparticles and, due to the nature of the process, is scalable in size as many needles can be arranged in parallel. The SUPERNANOCAP research will pave the way forward for European leadership in a new generation of more powerful and compact chips on the basis of proven and mature technologies that go beyond the Moore's boundaries and that will bring a step-change in eliminating the need for chemical-based batteries by replacing them with new affordable and potentially lighter energy storage devices.
