Building Information Model on on Mobile Devices

A BIM is virtual equivalents of the actual building parts and pieces used to build, maintain and demolish a building and allow us to simulate the building and understand its behavior in a computer environment way before the actual construction starts. The BIM represent a paradigm shift in the AEC industry all over the world. VSC is a mobile app for Planning, Construction, Hand over, Maintenance and Tenant management of buildings. VSC manage documents and task in BIM projects on mobile device (IOS, Android). The current version, VSC read IFC file (open BIM format) of the building and visualize the geometry on an iPad (iOS only). To fully benefit from BIM innovations new R&D development is critical. We collected user experiences from our users (Undervisningsbygg and Statsbygg). The user feedback analysis clearly show new features and new technology development is necessary fully benefit from BIM on mobile devices. The overall objective is to (1) significantly increase efficacy of the work processes in the building industry through innovative mobile technology that uses full potential of the BIM. We shall develop a (2) throughout understanding of the mobile BIM and motivate the users to engage in behaviors that sustain cost-effective work processes and promote user empowerment. We will conduct (3) evidence-based research on usability and user-behavior within the AEC industry on mobile devices and (4) develop innovative features and interactive design and introduce game play to meet (2). We will measure the (5) efficacy; reduced errors and omissions, increased collaboration among stakeholders, reduced rework and reduced use of paper (environment) by (6) developing an evidenced-based socio-economic cost-benefit model. The outcome will effectively transform the manual processes to digital handling of Planning, Construction, Hand over, Maintenance and Tenant management of buildings on mobile devices.
