Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder, and the most common varieties are Ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Overall in Europe 2.2 million people are suffering from these diseases. Current treatment and problem: There is no cure for the disease on the market today. For moderate to severe cases of IBD, the treatment options are biological treatment (anti-TNF). This treatment can provide very unpleasant side effects. In addition there is a very expensive treatment and it is used annually 6.2 billion Euro in Europe on IBD treatment. Studies have shown that about 1/3 of patients receiving this treatment does not need treatment to go into remission (improvement of disease over time). Our research group has recently published data showing that measurement of TNFa in the intestine of IBD patients can be used as a biomarker in clinical decision algorithms. This can lead to a paradigm shift in the treatment of IBD. The main objective of this project is to complete a diagnostic kit, from a prototype that has been established in a former BIOTEK2021 optimization project. The finished commercial kit can be used by all hospitals with laboratory. For the community and health authorities will this diagnostic product as a tool for better and more personalized treatment, and estimated annual reductions in anti-TNF therapy is 0.6 billion euros in Europe alone.
