Does the levels of PFASs in snow bunting eggs increase with proximity to airports in Svalbard?

Awarded: NOK 30,646

Examine if use of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous fire fighting foam (AFFF) at Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund Airport may contribute to bioaccumulation of PFASs in terrestrial biota in Svalbard. It is hypothesized that the concentrations of PFASs in snow bunting eggs will be higher in nests close to Longyearbyen and Ny-Ålesund Airport than in Adventdalen, which is situated >5 km from the airport. The study will also examine if there is any correlation between contaminant burden, eggshell thickness and vitamin levels. Hatching success in the nests will also be examined and related to contaminant burdens.
