Location:

The glacial history of the fjords/bays in the eastern Spitsbergen is still largely unknown. A seafloor study in the marginal area of the largest modern ice mass on eastern Spitsbergen can therefore provide new insights into past glacier dynamics in this key area. This is crucial for understanding the ice sheet evolution and dynamics in the whole of Svalbard. During the 2016 fieldwork we aim to acquire high-resolution multibeam bathymetric data from Wichebukta in Storfjorden and from Vaigattbogen in southern Hinlopen Strait. The multibeam echosounding provides high-resolution bathymetric data of the seafloor, which is an excellent tool for visualizing and mapping the submarine glacial morphology that is a well-proven tool for reconstructing past glacier dynamics.
